This piece reveals one remarkable man's struggle to overcome his past, and to come to terms with the history of his homeland, Rwanda.
After surviving the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994 and becoming involved with gangs in London, Ishimwa Muhimanyi became a ballet dancer. In this film, he tells us how.
Ishimwa was just 4 years old when he lost his mother during the Genocide. With his father, he later moved to London, where he joined a gang - and because of his behaviour his father sent him to the Rwandan countryside as a 15-year-old. There, he spent a year with his grandmother, reawakening as he healed from her maternal love. He eventually moved back to London and found redemption in the form of dance and becoming an acclaimed ballet dancer.
Ishimwa gives us new perspective and hope in the name of the generation of twenty-somethings who were children and infants when the Genocide occurred. Their views on how the Genocide shaped their lives, and their way of dealing with the collective trauma, comprise nothing short of an astonishing tribute to human resilience.
