He is definitely making a point here by saying today’s version of liberalism does not have to do anything with the actual idea of being free and independent from government and society. The point is now that western society has dropped the importance of religion for many decades liberalism is doing the best job here. Without this ideology no one knows how the society’ a concept would look like. I as a revert don’t doubt at all that the Islamic law system is the best system if not being abused only for power. But when talking about a society which has rejected religion in general it’s the best way to go. And as I said before contemporary liberalism has I think nothing to do with the origins form. Because I guess in those former days no one would have accepted immoralities we discover to say and which are normal and generally accepted. In the end it depends on what mankind is making out of it- both of religion and political concepts.

There is no end to this, we in Mexico used to have our own believes, a little backwards perhaps brutal too. In every corner of the lovely planet we’re we live, we will always find many different ways to believe in something. Can someone justify why depicting the face of Prophet Muhammad is forbidden in Islam? 124,000 prophets have come over time, including Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (MPBUT) but none of them made a big deal about their own appearance (s) but primarily focused on the message that each of them was sent to convey, from Allah. While I agree that disrespectful cartoons of the prophet(s) should be forbidden, I would appreciate pointers as to what legitimizes the current ban.

It all depends were you were born, Islam was never a part of the west, just like many other ways of lifestyle weren’t either. The beauty of liberalism or any philosophy for that matter, is that it does not claim to be perfect. The First Principles do not hold the same level of importance in liberalism as they do in Islam. This is because, by virtue of being a man-made creed, there is no pretense of divine perfection. Did it ever occur to this guy that as we emerged from the harshness of nature with highly circumstantial brain architectures which have always relied on incentivising survival and reproduction, that trying to define a 'grounded' shared social contract -- whether it be based on monotheistic principles of a higher authority, or a utilitarian framework protected under law -- will always be a futile endeavour. The single tenet provided to us through biology is to stay alive long enough to ensure successful duplication/distribution of our genes. In the west it was realised that as people embrace the freedoms and liberties of living in an equal and fair society, they are better able to provide for themselves, their families, and the greater communities in which they live. These are the true pleasures that most people (regardless of religion or country) strive for. So, lo and behold, the most wealthiest, productive countries with generally the highest standards of living, are western countries, as they invested in a system that gave the common man a sense of value and agency. No longer was he constrained to living under the arbitrary rule of some monarch or religious text. He was now able to seek his own destiny and truly live to scrutiny of god and his fellow man. This enabled western society to blossom and newer technologies were invented that created new ways to achieve purpose in this world. Eventually the same rights were extended to both women and men of originally oppressed origins. Women could now choose not to have children and pursue careers, for their own self-serving reasons or to benefit of society, there was no expectation. This social contract comes with many flaws, I will not deny that. However, it's still reasonably young and has improved the quality of life for billions while paving the way for less fortunate societies to grow and prosper. There are still many kinks to work out in regards to capitalism and corporate dominance. There is wealth inequality, substance abuses, many decadent and despondent members of the community. Many of these things could possibly be solve by social engineering in the way of restrictions, censorship, disciplinary action. But these things come at the expense of losing the innovative spirit that Liberalism has afforded the west. This is perhaps the most disheartening outcome I could imagine for our species as we are closer than we have ever been to a free and enlightened society. What an amazing outcome for a species of primates that used to live in huts made of sticks and fought each other with stones.

I believe He is conflating classical liberalism with modern leftism, which are entirely different. Modern leftism is clearly a permutation of Marxism and Collectivism. For instance, he mentions that liberals are allies of LGBTQ. He’s talking about modern leftists, not classical liberals. In most classical liberal societies, such as in colonial America, homosexuality was a punishable offense. We need to distinguish between classical liberalism and modern leftism. I believe that the former is far more compatible with Islamic values than the latter.
