Island Season 1 review: A brilliant fantasy-action vs poor writing
Hi Hypers Sara with you today.
Island is a mini Korean drama series based on the popular webtoon by Yoon In-Wan and Yang Kyung-il.
Synopsis
(Warning spoilers ahead)
Island is the latest fantasy action K-drama mini series. The story revolves around the war between demons and humans. In the beginning of the story, the drama brings back the history of Tamna Island which now known as Jeju island, the place where the evils flocked and caused chaos between humans and demons.
Hundreds of years later, Won Mi-ho (portrayed by Lee Da-hee), a rich hot headed heiress deported to the island to become a teacher by his father after she caused a scandal that could affect her company Deahan Group's reputation. Upon arriving at Jeju Island, she unknowingly encounters wild demons that apparently see something in her.
Fortunately, Van (portrayed by Kim Nam-gil) the immortal demon slayer appeared at the right time to save her. Van is half demon and half human whose task is to kill evils that ambushed humans. He seems to recognize Mi-ho's soul, which apparently a reincarnation of a deity that could save the world from evils that roam the island.
Mi-ho was saved by Van a few times from the lust demons and she seems clueless as to why evils attracted to her and when Van finally explained why, she dealt a contract with Van, hiring him as her bodyguard, sealing their fate together after that.
On the other side of the world, a young Catholic priest, Johan (portrayed by Cha Eun-woo) seems to know about Won Mi-ho's arrival on the Island and he instantly heads for Jeju Island to protect her.
Unbeknownst to Mi-ho, she seems to have the key to banish evils from the world but she has no idea who she was in her previous life and she doesn't know how to use her power. She doesn't have the memories of that.
When Johan arrives at the island and meets Van for the first time, he seems to know Van is a demon slayer which is a half demon. He doesn't seem to believe Van would protect Mi-ho and he provokes Van a few times to test the demon inside Van and finally he succeed.
The fight between Johan and Van is a brilliant scene; it ignites demonic soul inside Van and almost killed Mi-ho who suddenly appeared at the scene. Van managed to control his lust demon and stabbed his own arm instead of Mi-ho.
Apparently, it was revealed that, during their previous life encounter, Van used to kill Mi-ho the second he saw her. Mi-ho's soul was called Won-jeong in their previous life. Van seems to resent himself for the mistake he made.
Kim Nam-gil, Lee Da-hee and Cha Eun-woo never disappointed us in acting, they literally can pull you to join into the scenes. Island, despite its brilliant performance by the actors with superb acting, magnificent fantasy action, I couldn’t ignore the messy plot that drives frustration out of me personally. The inconsistencies of the pace which sometimes makes you wonder a lot of things. There are holes here and there, making the viewers dance in confusion.
While Van and Johan have strong backgrounds to support their roles, Mi-ho seems to lose herself between reality and fantasy. She failed to grasp her sacred role until the very last minute of the series.
Mi-ho at the beginning of the story was a stunning heiress who knew how to defend herself when she was in the City but her storyline is quite repetitive. It keeps circling in the same loop. She doesn't know what she is and it makes me frustrated how slow the pace of her story is. Until the series final episode, she is still clueless of what she is.
Second season seems promising and I hope the screenwriter could fix the mess they've made in the first season.
