The perfect transition from Hebrides to mainland Scotland, and that is a night on the beautiful island of Lismore. I left the Airstream at Oban Camping and Caravanning Club Site, took the wee foot passenger ferry across to Lismore, and stayed at Lismore Bunkhouse and Campsite. Next day to the Lismore Heritage Centre for coffee, a fantastic centre realised by An Comman Eachdraidh Lios Mòr.

The plant you didn't know the name of is a Geum rivale it likes wet ground. Keep up with the vlogs, great to watch.

I KNEW someone would know, thanks Roger! My gardening days were two decades ago, and the only two plants I remember were Mecanopsis Betonicafolia (blue poppy) and Clematis Tritanata Rubromarginata. The days of Bill Chudziak and Geoff Hamilton on the telly :)

Lismore looks beautiful and for some reason looks like a good beginners island. Not sure why. The hedgerows and stonewalls here where we live are full of flowers, miles of them. The flowers you showed are water avens. Think you need a second blog channel, Cakes I Have Met And Eaten. Thanks for another great trip.

Ooh, I'm liking your idea of the Vlog Theme. It could be a new 'thing'! ;) As for Lismore, it is very accessible and has the island 'vibe'. You're right at being good for starters as you don't have to invest too much time or money actually getting there or staying there to get the feel whether or not this kind of thing suits you or not. Good call!

My son and I spent a lovely afternoon there and took the same crossing and also walked (all the way there and back 😊) to the Heritage centre. Great coffee and cakes and lovely island feel.

hello Andrew and Dougal. I have been to Lismore, but went from Oban, so the ferry took 55 minutes, i took my car. I have to say that if you go by car, the only real place to park is the visitors centre. Its a beautiful island. Not for me for holidays, but I would go and live there. Now if i had gone to the centre and left my dogs outside they would have howled like wolves and cried lol. So tell dougal we can do a swap, it seems you can take him anywhere haha.
@andrewjditton

Agreed, part of its charm is its non-tourist way, it is very much an island for working and living. I hope you get back soon xxx

Hello Andrew...Just watched and enjoyed the Lismore video. I haven't been there but I will hop across for the day sometime soon. The two plants you spoke about are Green-winged Orchids and Fritillary. The garden version is indeed a Snakes Head Fritillary and tend to be a bit bigger and darker.

Thanks for that Harry! Yes, my flora and fauna knowledge is woeful, but it doesn't stop me loving nature :) Have a great time when you visit.

Like you I am not an expert but I used to see these wild flowers a lot when I lived on Islay and I looked them up.I am not sure when I will visit Lismore as my plans for the next few weeks revolve around walking in the Angus Glens (beautiful and often by-passed) and a trip to Ardnamurchan. Perhaps I can fit in a visit to Lismore on the way back home.After watching so many of your fabulous videos I am seriously thinking about getting myself a campervan.

Lismore is beautiful, Dougal is a star, Andrew you are a hero. I think I could spend several days there drawing and painting. I live in New Zealand, born and bred, and have spent the afternoon sailing in our beautiful harbour in Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty. It's winter but mild compared to your climate. I would love you to come to my part of the world.
@andrewjditton
@andrewjditton 7 лет назад
I *LOVE* New Zealand, and had two great six week trips there. But now Dougal is on the scene, a long-haul trip like that looks unlikely as it would have to be long enough to justify the flight, which is too long to be away from Dougal :(

Transitioning from the Outer Hebrides to mainland life was something that caught us not only by surprise, but something we found hard to deal with. Unfortunately our first destination was a busy campsite, which was a bit of a mistake.

Andrew, have you ever been hillwalking on Ben Nevis? It's truly spectacular! One thing that amazed me when I visited Scotland is how friendly and helpful the locals were, especially on the Islands and in the Hebrides. You don't often see that kind of thing here in Toronto.
@andrewjditton
@andrewjditton 7 лет назад
I've not and I must! I have only done Snowdon in Wales. Yes, it is the people I love about Scotland too, especially in the Hebrides. It's one of the reasons I learned Gaelic, just so I could get a little 'closer'.

A little bit of " piece on earth", nice film, which do you prefer" "tent" or Airstreem" For Lismore" a tent is perfect, pitched on high ground" having breakfast sat in a puddle" not a good start to the day"

I have to say I prefer the home comforts of the Airstream, but the tent allows me the freedom to slow down and enjoy places like this :)

Oh! Bluebells! I haven't seen bluebells in I don't know how long. Lovely trip, Andrew. I never knew there was such a place, but now it's on my bucket list. ; ) PS: If you put some small holes in the can, will that not let air get in to feed the flames when the pot is resting on top?
