I was married to a Finn and lived in Finland for years. Finns are calm, literal, factual and stoic. They don't show much emotion or compliment each other. The good news is when they say something, they actually mean it. It's not an overused exaggeration like in American English.
@YoungManNihilist That's really nice of you! Compliments lift people up. In the USA, it's common to compliment total strangers...and to have conversations with total strangers. This behavior with strangers is not the norm in Finland. Even Ismo the comedian speaks about this.
I've been to two of his gigs. He is even better live and stayed to meet him in person after one of the shows and he is just as fun and down to earth out of his act too.
He came to your city TWICE?! He only came here once (so far), and I agree. I got to meet him in person too, but I’m jealous that he came to your city twice! Where do you live?
@@kilppa ouch, that's a bit far for me but now tell me, when his jokes are so hilarious in English, does he perform in Finnish when back home? Different jokes then?
I feel “pumped” from his show. Actually, “I can't contain myself, I can barely breathe and I'm experiencing muscle spasms from the avalanche of emotions. I actually passed out for a couple of seconds from the excitement of watching one of ISMO’S videos.”
His charm is that he takes EVERYTHING at face value. Stuff we ignore as fluff he sees as literal and points it out. That's what makes it so darn funny.
2:23, a woman in the background also says "great", clearly resonating to what Ismo is saying. Those moments happen a lot when excellent comedians tell us their clever observations. Ismo excels at that.
Yes. Ismo has sometimes good jokes but at least most of the Finnish jokes are ok/just better than mediocre but his appearance and show is just beyond excitment and I cannot contain myself.
I don't think we realize the genius that ismo is. He is the most original comedian in recent times. He is up there. I am almost pissed off at myself for only knowing about him this late. His delivery and timing impeccable
My manager just used the phrase “super excited” to get the new software system. I had to put my phone on mute because I started howling thinking about Ismo 😆🤣
Go Ismo! I know I'm not the first one to say it, but the topics of your jokes are so refreshing among all the common stereotype, sexual and race jokes. As a Finn I get to enjoy you on both languages, but actually even prefer the English ones on average. Hope you get a Netflix special in the near future.
The way Ismo understands the nuances of the English language is simply amazing. And what's more amazing is that he is not even a native English speaker, yet he makes the native speakers laugh at their own language. His material and timing are spot on, nobody can copy and deliver it as effectively as he can. Pure comedy genuis.
I think not being a native helps to make the obsrvations. One gets blind to the illogical expressions in one's own language. Well, Ismo has some good remarks on the Finnish language - but not on this level.
I'm quite sure his American wife has helped him improve his English, if not in more ways. Not to take away from his brilliance. I love intelligent comics like he is, both in English and Finnish.
@@jennifer1329 I've understood his wife is Finnish - they married before moving to America, I think. But we Finns study English pretty profoundly in the school, many read scientific publications daily - just the chances to speak it constantly are not available for many - the majority, perhaps. So it basically just needs cultural adjustment, when crossing the Atlantic pond, or moving to the Old Blimey. And we Finns hear more the American than British English.
@@jennifer1329 Nou vöriis :) Enjoy & keep on keeping on - God bless you! Just take care you have someone to send you ruisleipä, pulla and salmiakki, when the graving hits :)
I have wonderful friends in Finland, that I consider family. So I know a little bit about Finland, which makes Ismo's comedy even more special,. Because if you know some things about Finland, then you know that is is poking fun at the US AND Finland at the same time! Keep watching Ismo as he is a talent who will become a household word all over the world..
ISMO A “laugh out loud” comedian . . . the BEST I’ve seen in a long time. His analysis of the English language is so funny and spot on! He’s so refreshing! Great timing & delivery! Takes the mundane and makes it hilarious. Look forward to his next video. “ISMO a day keeps a laugh coming my way!” Thank you, ISMO.
I hadn't laughed so much in such a long time, Ismo! Greetings from Brazil to all of you lovers of great stand up comedians like Ismo!!! GOD bless you all!!!
Ismo you are like the dark horse of comedy, awaiting to be "discovered" by the masses. You are one of the best comics out there, and your style is absolutely unique, sharp and ...good (that's an acceptable compliment for a Fin ? ;-)) Don't want to get too " excited " here to the point I would also start to have muscle spams and the like !!!!!!! Netflix, sign this man.
I think it's a personality thing + a multiple-language-speaker thing. The jokes aren't new, but might not have been very common on the American scene / to the current generation / to YT viewers. And he delivers them well.
After you signed up for our email list we were so excited that several of us have died. I am the only survivor and I am experiencing major nausea and cramping from the hyper-exciting news. I'm afraid I won't last much longer but I'm quite rapturous that I could get the email out before I expire..Thank you!!!!
Ismo, I am super stoked to let you know that, I really believe you have the potential to become the funniest person in the world. Your work is so good. I found out about you earlier this year and I’ve been following you ever since. Keep up the great work man.
Natural comedian. Got so excited when I received a notification lol. Seen your videos just recently, but I'm already your biggest fan. That's how hilarious you are.
Not that I get my panties in a bunch from offensive jokes, but I really like how this guy can be so fucking funny and make incredible material from the most mundane of things, love it. A breath of fresh air.
I’m a Japanese person who is learning English.Your comedy are great text to learn English. They are fabulous beyond the description. I can’t wait anymore to hear the next one.
In Sweden we say “Vänliga hälsningar” which translates “Kind greetings”. But after watching this video I’m going to change that to “Vanliga hälsningar” which means “Ordinary greetings”
I like how he always pretends that he doesn't know the English very well and is looking for the right word, but in fact, he is - now I am looking for the right word :D - he is craftsman with the words. Absolutely amazing and hilarious, great job!
@@dentistlinguist6569 Hell is never a good start. Nothing good anymore in hell. But starting a bucket shop sounds good. Call it 'The Bucket Residence'. Would it be a free bucket shop? :)
@@timomastosalo Has there ever been a free one? You must give me some time, I've so far never heard of it, but I will answer as soon as know for sure, ok?
@@timomastosalo I assume you have heard it, but otherwise, "Bucket Shop" by the Libertines. We will all be happy in the end by accepting bad things happen? But I love free buckets and you!
You are really right. Top notch comedy. I wonder if Netflix is having negotiations already, but they are just keep it silent... Reminds me of the silent letters, as soon as i said that.
Was lucky to see Ismo in LA last year, even met him and talked to him. One of the nicest guys you'll ever going to meet. Like most people have said, I told him: "You need a Netflix special". I even bought one of his shirts that I wear proudly that says: "Funny Ass Shit".
The guy not only does comedy in another language, but really smart comedy. We have well over a million words in American English with all the slang and what not. Ismo, you're a really smart guy. But you already knew that didn't you. Thank you for your wonder.
Hi Ismo. I’ve been watching some old segments of Victor Borge. While he was also a great - some might even say outstandingly exceptional - musical performer, I find that your jokes and delivery style have a lot in common. P.S.: this is meant as a great.. no wait, huge... no, giant, big-a** compliment ;)
I overheard him answer to a fan in the Comedy Store that he isn't aware of Ismo and he won't take people as a guest just for the sake of pleasing the fans. He said that nowadays he only takes guests that he likes personally.
I think Ismo is a unique and amazing talent. I haven't seen anyone mention it, but don't you think his face and expressions contribute to his performance? A true comic with a comedic look.
This is a nice theme to start make home-made videos: make the actors behave litterally how those 'excited' texts say. I'd like to see the enacted business person in his/her expensive suit gone beyond excitement, experiencing muscle spasms while writing a thank you response, pass out for awhile, and bravely return to writing.
Every language has these odd spots. It's just for a foreigner it's easier to notice. this joke especially shows the mechanism how it happens: One said good, next one says great, the third is excited... So we always need to get very hyped, if that is expected. Then if that hype is required, there soon comes the need to surpass what was before, to show genuine, believable excitement. But it's a rat whel: once some way to express excitement is the norm, it doesn't sound excited very soon.... I think all colourful language goes like that: someone makes a colourful, illogical phrase, but it's poetically a dead on observation. And once it's accepted, it becomes the norm - and mother tongue speakers don't stop to think about it anymore, coz they've heard it since toddlers.
@@timomastosalo It's not really about the fact he's a foreigner, language-specific jokes were already his thing before he moved over to the Americas, like how he broke down the Finnish "no niin"
@@user-su6wy3bj4v I wasn't talking about Ismo - but about the English language vs other languages. That the versus is not that much needed. Which your example about Ismo's joke about finnish just proves. And yeah, it's really about being a foreigner, not a mother tongue speaker. Myself, and many other learners of English have made these notes of the oddities or English. Or some other language they have to learn. But this is not taking away from Ismo's skill to make stand up comedy about it, which is beyond mere observation. It's just that the things were already there, in the language - English or Finnish - before Ismo made the jokes. His brilliance is to piece them together, to spill them out in these packages we watch beyond drooling in excitement.
