There is substantial evidence that drivers are not achieving a valid ABS/EBS connection which can have life-threatening consequences.
There are several reasons why the EBS is not connected in transit.
Susie lines could be worn, connectors might be greasy, the EBS fuse in the tractor could have blown or the driver may have simply connected the wrong end of the EBS line to the trailer (leaving only the dummy stowage point connected on the tractor).
A lack of EBS connection results in reduced braking response time and braking strength which is not related to weight. In addition, there are other potential consequences including roll-over (no roll stability) and double deck bridge strikes (as suspension ride height cannot be corrected).
Regrettably, amber EBS warning lights in cabs are easily overlooked but occur for good reason. The Don-Bur EBS-Safe system (fitted to the trailer) is a further safety system to ensure that the driver does have a valid EBS connection.
