Well, THAT got off to an awkward start! At the same time Isabel is so savvy and poised and articulate: "There is no mechanism for you to do so. You will be an Earl, you will inherit the estate. Of course you can throw it away when you have it. That's up to you".

I only discovered Downton Abbey a few months ago, simply because I wanted to know what the fuss was about. And I got completely hooked! Although I am currently into the 5th season/series, I feel that the first 3 seasons were the best because I became so invested in the Matthew-Mary story arc. And yes, I absolutely agree with another comment here - Mary’s presence sucked the air out of Matthew’s lungs!!!😂

If you binge it multiple times, some patterns and weirdness surfaces, like how often characters say "What!". People behave out of character for no reason. Mr. and Mrs. Bates can get on your nerves with their perpetual martyr complex. Writers trying too hard to make Tom take part in conversations by saying weird things like "what a palaver" or "and we must do what nanny says". Etc. But no denying it is a classic and a masterpiece for decades.

Matthew Crawley embodies nontoxic masculinity. He is respectful of everyone regardless of class status, he is chivalrous, he validates other people’s desires and opinions, he isn’t afraid to express vulnerability (note his tears of grief at Sybil’s death and tears of joy at his son’s birth), he lacks any ambition to hold power over others (to the point where he doesn’t even want any of the inheritances he receives), he’s always alert to any possible dishonesty and/or harm that may come from his own behavior, and he isn’t afraid for the times to change. Truly the perfect man.

He eventually learned the ways of his new life and accepted the challenge -- but with far-sighted vision that would bring DA into the 20th century. To add to my previous comment, the first thing mrs Crawley does when she comes to Downton is to reform the hospital, she didn’t need to do that and she could’ve rested comfortably on her new house and position. Not to mention when the war breaks out she moves to an aid camp in france, away from her safe luxury back in Downton. I’d say she expects respect for her work and experience but not luxury and status.
