I love how Robert was well aware of his daughter’s behavior while her mother was oblivious to it. Not the usual dynamic but it’s interesting
@loliver9660
@loliver9660 4 года назад
I think Cora is aware of Mary's behavior. She knew something was wrong after Mary excused herself with a headache when she was mad at Matthew. Cora told her not to quarrel with him because she may need him, which turned out to be true. The look Cora had on her face when Robert said Mary could be such a child showed she secretly understood what he meant. Her asking him what he meant was like "I already know, but humor me." Robert was kind of late to the party when it came to Mary, so I thought it was interesting for him to say it out loud in front of everyone and acknowledge her issues.

Joe Dick that’s harsh.. she married William to boost his morale even though she didn’t want to. She was eager to help Sybil when she wanted to learn how to cook. She was heart broken when Sybil died. She stood up for William’s dad when he was about to lose his farm. She sabotaged mrs Bird’s cooking when mrs. Pattmore thought she was losing her job etc etc. I can think of more good than the “pretty horrible” things.

@Joe Dick yes she definintely was a cunt. William was on his deathbed hoping to marry and give her benefits that'll help her and her reasoning to not marry was "oh ma values ooooo its not right." That's retarded logic to say the least when the obvious kindness was to just go through with it and pretend for those few moments.

No. It wasn't infatuation. It was the real thing, but Mary was afraid to commit because she carried the shameful secret of how Mr Pamuk died in her bed. She felt like she had this "Scarlet Letter" she carried around inside her, like she was tainted somehow and was afraid of what would happen if Matthew ever found out. She was afraid that she would lose him, that he would leave her. He truly loved Mary as well and was so hurt, he got engaged to Miss What's her face on the rebound.

@Joe Dick I guess they had different beauty standards back then. Mary is more classically beautiful than Sybil, I believe. The face and the cheekbones... Sybil's face is more plump and her lips are fatter (the beauty standards of today). I think that even in the 2000s they would have preferred Mary's appearence. Moments like this that proved Robert knew just how immature and selfish Mary was makes me wish we had scenes where he actually tells her off for her awful behaviour. There were the odd times where he spoke sternly to her, ‘really Mary I wish you wouldn’t say such things, people will believe you mean them.’ or ‘That’s below the belt even for you.’ But she either just answered back or sulked like a spoilt child. Just once it would have been nice to see Robert properly shout at Mary, calling her out on her attitude and selfish actions and not have her try to justify herself back and actually look shamefaced.

I know it’s an unpopular opinion; but I can’t stand Mary. Sybil was the best of the sisters and early on Edith wasn’t great either but Mary always had a viciousness about her that lasted. When Mary said, "Matthew...he told me...oh wasn't I supposed to know?" An impulsive lie just to hurt her sister, proving she's still no more than an adolescent. Mary could be quite disappointing.
@cheetahinireland18
@cheetahinireland18 5 лет назад
Mary was exaggerating, but Matthew did say something to Mary of the effect that he wasn't and never would be interested in Edith earlier. Mary just phrased it cruelly because Edith sniped at her first. Everybody was laughing at Mary's imitation and if Edith had said nothing, both of them would have gone on happily with their men. Both of them were disappointing in this scene, if we are being honest. They let their competition get so petty...and Edith fully embraced challenging Mary, it was cheapening to both Sir Anthony and Matthew. They are both guilty, so I don't know why Mary gets all the crap for this. I can't figure out whether it's because people like rooting for the underdog (Edith) or if it's because this scene was a negative for the Matthew/Mary romance.
@Cleptrio
@Cleptrio 5 лет назад
cheetahinireland18 I hate that Mary gets blamed entirely for their catty arguments. Edith was just as horrible, and just as petty, but she can’t play on the same level as Mary and ends up getting hurt worse, so everyone blames Mary for everything. Obviously Mary could be horrible, but Edith is just as bad (if not worse, since she never seems to act even a little remorseful for anything she does).
@cheetahinireland18

Cleptrio Totally agree about everything. One scene that always stuck out to me is when Carson collapses while trying to pour the wine (I think it was the time they thought he was having a heart attack) and when they tell Edith to hurry and get help, she whines about Carson staining her dress 🙄 Rewatching the show really opened my eyes to Edith!

As the eldest daughter in the family it's only to be expected. The fate of the estate is surrounded by the fact that she's a woman and how her father doesn't have a sense of business in his bones. When Cora called him foolish for investing so much into a single enterprise is worse than trying to cash in tin for silver. In Brazil we never had such a thing. The family inheritance has always been equally divided between male and female heirs. And we were a monarchy during the XIX century...The law has always differentiated the title and the properties. The firstborn male inherited the title but the properties were divided equally among the heirs.

The legislation on stock companies arrived in Brazil at the end of 19th century precisely to help organized the inheritance of landlords families. Those aristocratic families created companies, banks in general, and they put all their assets, money and lands under the ownership of these companies. The inheritance was distributed as shares of the family company. The law restricted company's equity liability depending on the regime choosed by the company. The Almeida Prado family from São Paulo was an aristocratic family of coffee planters. They created a bank with family assets over 100 years ago. How is Edith any less vain and catty than Mary? They both behaved badly...and in this scene, Edith started it. Nesseire did you even watch the clip? You can clearly hear the women laughing! They focus on Sybil, who stifles her laugh with her hand. Honestly, you can disagree with my opinion, but that people laughed at Mary’s joke was clearly presented...making things up doesn’t better your point.

Sorry, I cannot muster compassion for men who WANT to be a lady’s “one and only” but don’t direct the relationship to that result. If she’s not committed to you you’re NOT an “official” couple and you don’t have the right to get butthurt if she explores other possibilities.
@mikoe3461
@mikoe3461 5 лет назад
Very true. If you want a monogamous romantic relationship with someone, ask for it and if they agree you can rightfully demand them to focus their romantic advances on only you. But men who are unwilling to ask for such a commitment have zero right to be annoyed when women who have no obligation to them explore other options.
