Thanks to Buster28 over at PlanetIsuzoo.com I was able to fix my issue where the indicator for the 4WD and 2WD TOD system would flash for the rear wheels along with the red check sign. This was a rush video so there a few fumbles and misuse of words here and there. I'm not a mechanic but I was determined to fix this problem. I cleaned both VSV with electric cleaner, tested them, and checked all vacuum lines for leaks and made sure they were in the proper place. I was directed to a diagram that led a specific vacuum line to the vacuum tank that is located on the frame below the driver side door. There were a few lines disconnected aside from the one to the tank. In the end it was a success! I hope this helps anyone in some way who is experiencing the same issue. I forgot to record but I blew out all the vacuum lines with an air compressor just for added security. After 2 yrs of flashing in my eyes its finally gone. I retract my statement about the Land Rover Defender I Like it now haha

I dont care if this video was an hour long, any kind of troubleshoot video, amateur or not (at least we all have High Definition smart phones these days) is heaven sent. THIS is what youtube is all about. None of that TV crap

Glad to say the flashing never appeared again TOD works 4x4 engages well... Im going to replace all the oil fluids for all the gizmos underneath like all those axle stuff and so on the book recommends.

Nice going Farouqi. I noticed your ABS warning is illuminated. Bare in mind, the TOD, requires the ABS to function correctly. Namely the (4) wheel speed sensors, are enumerated by the ABS ecu, this data, (delta) is fed to the TOD ecu, which in turn, will disengage the front axle drive lock, (SOTF). It's specifically the SOTF operation you show here, (Shift On The Fly) if you engage the 4WD manually, (only for off road, or snow etc) this will also engage the front axle lock. The biggest problem with getting one's head around "TOD" is failing to recognise TOD is a SYSTEM, and many components are part of it. I liked your video, because you opened with that very same "mistake" i.e. stating "this" is a common problem, many people have, then come to follow a process, (read the manual) break it down, and systematically test. Only to discover, it's not at all common to find someone stole a critical component like a vacuum reservoir. Also, side note, the biggest single cause of "TOD" issues are the owners, not reading the manual. Resulting in common causes like different tyre pressure, or even different tyre types, and if the OD of any one tyre differs, the ABS will send a delta (slip) to the TOD which it recognises must be wrong. This is why the TOD has it's own check warning, to cover a situation that another upstream device feeds it BS. I really enjoyed you sharing you excitement and satisfaction. Perseverance paying off :-)

I have a 1998 Trooper. It took me 3 years to track down the problem. With the help of Planet Isuzu, I could work through the system. I first started with the solenoids. I disassembled them. Polished the metal cylinders to remove corrosion, sprayed with parts cleaner, and reassembled. Then I checked all the Ball switches that indicate that the messages sent by the ECM at each step were enacted. Finally, I turned my attention to the transfer case. That is where I found a loose ground wire. There are 3 control wires that go into the motor that moves a rod that engages the front wheel drive. It is only after all the ball switches are in agreement that the blinking light on the dash stops blinking and the 4WD is working. The main reason it took me 3 years to fix my Trooper was after each step I took the 4-wheel drive would operate for a while and then the SOTF light would start flashing. In hindsight, this was not a difficult problem to solve. The problem is the amount of time it takes to verify that all the procedures are working.

@@Matucks Don't edit brother you're good here. A bigger problem is when they don't include important details and assume viewers aren't possibly brand new to the situation. They should never assume the level of experience.... just explain everything. It's the biggest problem with humans; assuming. Don't worry about the cursing-- yeah yeah youtube might have so many stubborn viewers and judgmental people that won't ever change that maybe they won't like the video just because of it... however you and I and nobody living today is at fault for what is considered a "curse word". That judgment was made up for some words and not others, all of which have synonyms. So it came down so somebody we don't know and don't kneel to, claiming which words were "bad". That's ridiculous and we know it. Unfortunately it has become such strong tradition, we feel obligated to continue thinking that way. We need words to let us exclaim though-- I've heard dirt bags use curse words, and also religious leaders and academic authorities curse. So the jigs up. We just have to play the game (well I don't sometimes, unless there are children around and parents who work about it, but if al of us just relaxed and didn't label the words as such, we may not view any of it as bad or use them at all). I agree on they should still have something around that looks like the Trooper with rock solid components to continue sales. The new defender isn't what I though it would be, it's not that ugly to me but it's WAY too expensive for me poor ass and isn't simple enough for me to want to off-road it. I do wish it looked more utilitarian. Help me in pressuring Tesla, Rivian, and other electric truck makers to build something like the Trooper!! I have already written to them but I see nothing but pickups, mostly because they know they sell. Drives me nuts. Yes they are useful, but almost 4 out of 5 turk Is see have nothing in the back and not a speck of dirt on them. Most people are better off with an SUV. I just want a Tesla cyber-SUV built similar to a Trooper or 4runner, but I don't need to the big screen and all that fancy stuff. Just great milage and reliability. Thanks for the video. I'll probably need it someday on my '99. I use it a lot, an sometimes that helps 4x4's work well-- keep it used once a month or more. Even if you have to drive on some gravel for five minutes.

@@lasvegasloner4621 Yeah I personally like long detailed videos because like you said alot of people assume we already know a thing or two. I love conversations not memes and 3-5 sec clips of things. Im just being myself and not a hipster type attitude if that makes any sense. I'm against all trends and tend to be raw and uncut for the most part. I grew up in a time when life was more interactive and thats just how we behaved. I'm not politically correct and don't tend to be, doesn't mean I don't have manners or discipline but I'm old school and raise my family the same way. Its good to know we have people like you out here. I was born 1980 and my friends and I would figure things out step by step trial and error no youtube in our days and I know the struggles. As for the Trooper I love the thing but damn does it burn a ton of oil and gas. I found a mechanic who says he can drop in a 08 Tundra engine and trans. I don't know if that is even possible but anything is possible these days, heck someone on youtube put a video with a Miata and a Hellcat engine. The machinery is available I think I will have it done and hes asking $4,000 to do it. Its better IMO than buying anything new its a tested reliable engine and trans and its Toyota with an Isuzu body. It makes too much sense not to give it a try. The Trooper gets looks and complaints all the time and people love it. Even these Jeep guys admire it. I can't see myself parting with it the body is just so nice and not a sign of rust for a 20yr old vehicle. Its simple and if that toyota engine can go in It will probably last another 10yrs. Ill keep ya posted if anything happens. Thanks again for taking the time and watching the video

Probably one of the easiest SUV one can fix. Get a workshop manual, spend a bit of time reading, join a good owners club and get things fixed yourself! No special tools needed, cheap parts all over the place and common sens make it one of the best SUVs to own. I got the 4JX1 3.0 diesel engine and I never let any pseudo mechanic get their hand on it. I fix it myself and it drives and pulls like a train! Good video!

I agree after owning it for a few years now one thing I always to is oil check and change. It's just something you have to deal with owning this thing but it's working strong and after installing a transmission cooler it's so much better

The sad thing is so many mechanics couldn't figure it out but man I put brains to work. It's still working just fine and never touched it again. A mechanic was the one who rebuilt the entire engine and just decided to put it back together half ass leave things broken and disconnected and removed essential parts. I assume it's common practice so people can come back for more abuse and drain wallets

Thank you for the video. I have the blinking problem when I click the 4wd button then the check light comes on. Did you buy new hoses or were they all still there? I am going to work on this these coming days. How long did it take?
@Matucks
@Matucks 3 года назад
I had to buy some hoses because some were worn out. The whole process took roughly about 3-4 hrs I would say but I'm very limited in my mechanical skills. The thing that took the longest was cleaning up the area there was so much dirt and oil buildup. Be extra careful because the VSV was very brittle so I sprayed it down really good and soaked it with lubricant just so nothing breaks. I hope this helps just make sure all hoses are connected that was my main issue hoses were in the wrong place and disconnected plus the the canister situation, good luck keep us posted if anything new is discovered. My only problem with this vehicle is gas mileage and having to add about a quart of oil every 3 weeks or so other than that its a great vehicle.

hi, i have an isuzu bighorn 1999 model, it has the same issue of the blinking green lights and the check on the TOD. so what you mean is just cleaning up and the problem will be gone?
@Matucks
@Matucks 4 года назад
For me it was due to two disconnected vacuum lines and I assume some electrical cleaner would help those moving parts since they probably haven't been engaging for who knows how long. But yeah cleaning it up and making sure the lines are right and I also replaced a few worn hoses after but it did fix my problem hopefully it will help yours also. Just be very careful and use proper tools because the parts are old and can break easily to spray down with some lubricant first to loosen things up. Good Luck btw the blinking never happened again and the TOD works just fine now

@Matucks
@Matucks 4 года назад
@@nickcanon7415 I drove mines for awhile probably 2 years with the blinking but nothing bad has happened but then again I'm not familiar with how these things work. I guess it was just staying in 2WD all the time. Once I fixed it there was never no odd sounds or further issues. I still drive daily it does burn alot of oil I have to add a quart roughly every 800-1000 miles sometimes 1 1/2 quarts. It also is very bad on gas, I probably get 13-16 mpg on average. A mechanic told he can put a Toyota Tundra engine and trans in it so I'm actually saving for it. I have no idea if its possible but he said he can do it. I will actually post a new video of mines in about a week just a review to honor its 20yr old anniversary.

Farouqi Amin ok, mine is a diesel so the fuel is quite cheap. I can’t complain on that, but nowadays I have to top up automatic transimItion oil and engine oil so often, I sometimes get the oil lamp on the screen , but once I topped up the transimition oil, it disappeared. I love this suv

Good for a bit then it does it again! Like you the mechanics i don't know i have never mess with one!! So i hear there is to calanoid's in the tyranny, one to power up the sednoid to the switch to over drive !! i have driven it 10 miles no problem. get out start again and maybe less than a mile it will do it !! I found mines on ebay however most Isuzu rodeos and trooper have them I guess. The part number is 8971021002 for the canister. It was from a 97 Trooper and it fitted perfect in my 2000. The 4WD light never came back on the issue is fixed. The other part number is 8971018581 Denso Japan. Good luck and be careful some of them plastic things can break easy.

@Matucks
@Matucks 3 года назад
Yeah it's real easy. Try your best not to mix up the hoses label it tape it marker whatever works. Just do exactly what I did. I had to physically feel where the hose went without moving it from its original space but if you do just look around till you see something disconnected. Clean the area good because all that grim down there makes it too damn messy. The canister thing is by the driver side under the vehicle. Clean the parts real good and just be extra careful things are brittle. If you have a local junkyard look for a trooper and you can get the parts off of you break something because parts are rare. Keep us posted
