Some long-winded language notes about gloves: The normal Japanese word for "glove" is 手袋 (てぶくろ/tebukuro) which uses the kanji (Chinese characters) for "hand" and "bag." But because it's a baseball glove and it's associated with foreign culture, "baseball glove" uses the English word "Glove" usually written in Katakana as "グラブ/gurabu" since Japanese doesn't have a schwa vowel sound like "love" or "the" and doesn't distinguish between Vs and Bs in foreign loan words. Google probably translated "gurabu" as "grab" rather than glove because it's closer to the actual pronunciation. Sometimes it'll be written as "グローブ/guro-bu," which google would probably translate as "globe."

8:39 on “Grab” vs. “Glove”. These are what we call “Katakana Words” where we mimic the sounds of foreign words with Japanese characters. This is why words that did not originally exist in Japanese such as Tomato is トマト (To-ma-to). The interesting thing with these words is the fact that it’s based on how they interpreted it back then, which results in interesting cases like the word “White” in English being ホワイト (Ho-wa-i-to) because whomever heard that word back in the days heard it that way. It’s a similar case for the word “Glove”. This word was commonly pronounced/written as グローブ (Gu-ro-o-bu) initially. However, in 1998 the NHK Pronunciation Accent Dictionary, which most TV broadcasters base their pronunciation, decided to use グラブ (Gu-ra-bu) as their interpretation of the English word “Glove”. To adapt to this most manufacturers now use the word グラブ instead, but since the Japanese pronunciation of グラブ sounds more like “Grab” than “Glove”, you encounter this slight difference in translation.

@@BillCherno86 There is a Japanese word for glove (手袋, Tebukuro, literally "hand bag" lmao), but the loan word グローブ is more commonly used. The reason why these loan words (外来語, Gairaigo) exist was historically for things or words that simply did not exist in Japanese ("Pan" (bread) from Portuguese is a good example), and is now more commonly used to be fashionable or who knows why, even most Japanese could not explain why certain loanwords are used.

I love how Mr. Bauer has meshed with his teammates, coaching staff, etc. He appears genuinely happy to be in Japan, which is not always the case with foreign players who have moved to NPB. Some foreign players go to Japan and never integrate themselves with their teammates or even make an attempt to enjoy the local culture. They make a bubble about themselves rejecting any Japanese influence, and by and large, appear miserable or at least disinterested while playing there. After watching all of Mr. Bauer's Japan videos, I am very impressed about how he and his agent have gone above and beyond trying to integrate themselves into the entire experience, not only the hard work and dedication required to be a professional player (training, culture integration, and voluntary fan interactions), but also their videos showing them out and about in Yokohama and Tokyo. Mr. Bauer's critique of the sporting goods store was especially interesting. There were two moments in previous videos that really stuck out to me. First, Mr. Bauer gave a shout-out to a US Navy sailor who was close to transferring back stateside whom he met (meant a lot to me because I served in the US Navy at Yokosuka Naval Base from 1995-2005). Second, a young boy traveled with his father all the way from the states to see Mr. Bauer play. Mr. Bauer actually came out of the team facility to meet the boy and speak with him. Both examples show class! I wish you great success on and off field and I hope you enjoy your time in Japan.

The session with your teammate is just genius. So crazy that you know what to look for, how to adjust it and the technique to do so. You said you want to give kids an inspiration to play ball, you’re living up to it. You’re a stud bro. Happy to have you a part of the game.

It gets better if you look up that teammates recent start in the minors, 7 IP, no hits, no walks, 6 Ks. Idk how much he was able to implement Trevor's instruction, but he definitely got either motivation or technique out of it for sure

Yes!!! Awesomeness!! Loved the interview in the stands and your RU-vidr answer. I grew up in a small town 5hrs away from nearest MLB team. Could never dream of having access like this or even meeting a player. And at best an autograph. You taking us along with you is very important and I love it.

Trevor always hit the mound with energy, and bring so many great contents to the fans, no matter what league he’s playing in. That’s why he’s my favorite player.

I'll be liking every video and commenting on them as well from now going forward. Trevor has easily become my favorite ball player over the past few years, and he's actually getting me interested in baseball again. I haven't watched in over 10 years, but I can't wait to watch his future starts with the BayStars!

Trevor, you are a great player and a great statesman. It's wonderful to see how welcoming and friendly Japan is. I'm very happy for you.

This RU-vid channel is one of my favorites. I love baseball, and my favorite pitch type is the screwball, & knuckleball and it's a shame this pitch is dying from baseball, I think Trevor Bower should be the one to bring it back

Awesome job. Got into your stuff from Eric’s channel and instantly became a fan. Keep up the good work. I’m now starting to save a lot of money to go out and watch you pitch. Really glad to see a star pitcher play again.

It’s mind blowing to me why ur not in the mlb right now. Grew up in NYS and have been a Yankee fan for 30 years. But still have always followed your career. You’re one of my favorite players. I’m glad you are still pitching. It’s what you were meant to do bro.

Choice. His contract with the Dodgers had a clause where if he played for another team he's lose $22M. So, he went to Japan for 1yr (for $4M), thus ensuring he gets the $22M, plus the $4M from the 1yr contract, and also cross out a bucket-list item by playing in Japan. He'll be back in the MLB after this (assuming a team wants to sign him). All-in-all, smart move on his part.

I’m Japanese living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I follow MLB with the MLB app and NPB on RU-vid. I really enjoy watching your videos on Japan because they show my country from a totally different viewpoint. About glove and grab, you might’ve noticed by now, but most Japanese cannot hear the difference between L and R. Lice and Rice are the same, and if a Japanese start talking about Erection with a serious face, he/she is most likely talking about Election…😂

Brother I appreciate what you do with these youtube videos. The insights from when you where in the states to now in Japan from the club house, different stadiums, to how everything works being a professional ball play. But the best thing you do is showing the insights on training and how to be a better pitcher. If I had this type of insights to when I was in high school no telling how I would have ended up. I went and played in college but couldn't stay healthy. The things you are doing on here I hope kids or parents are watching.

I think we can all agree that this page is the best vlog series out of any sports vlog platform. Baseball has so much down time and Trevor takes advantage of the down time to teach. Him being a player and myself being somone that works on the other side producing live sports/entertainment tv. People don’t realize the day to day we go through. I created a series teaching everyone about the broadcast side of sports and I love seeing Trevor take advantage of the down time he has to teach a day in the life. Also I will stick to the media getting access to the locker rooms in America. Not sure why Japan doesn’t do that either. Maybe because of the dirt/shoe rule Trevor talked about! What Trevor is making is better tv then any other sports program in the world. Thank you Trevor, miss seeing you walk around dodger stadium with you.
