It really is such a slept-on title. It’s less about super powers than it is about the psychological transformations that happen when a person is disconnected from their body. He gets angry about it, he embraces the novelty of his celebrity, but eventually he’s forced into this more spiritual/philosophical realm because that’s all he’s really got. I rarely feel awe when reading comics, and Chadwick gives me that. The scope of the series unfolds beautifully, gets quieter and more profound as it goes. Hope we get one more series! The last outta retirement shorts were great! Thanks for introducing some new folks to it.

Chadwick said that Dark Horse wants to do a Library edition to co-side with the next mini series.

There's a dope Concrete statue still standing in the Dark horse offices out here in PDX. It's the 1st thing you see when you walk in. Absolutely gorgeous!

As a kid, Punisher made me wanna make comics. As an adult, it was Concrete. One of the greatest.

I have almost all of the single issues except for one that’s from the mid 2000’s. Hoping Kayfabe effect will cause this series to be reprinted into a hardcover omnibus.

Such a brilliant combo of extremely sensitive comic and character moments contrasted with a character who’s unable to feel his physical body. Makes feelings all about emotions instead of sensations. Brilliant.

Dark Horse also collected all the Concrete stories in a smaller sized books (1-7) with a new trade dress, the art still leads clearly at the smaller size (though not as nice as those larger collections).

I'm so glad you guys made this video, Concrete's my absolute favorite. Like some other people here, I'm really hoping this could stoke some fires of it coming back into the public eye. For how great it is (and how well regarded it once was, though that was before my time. Relatively, I'm a very new reader), it's completely underappreciated. I'm really looking forward to the one Paul's working on right now, the one where Ron gets amnesia. It'll be the first story I'll be able to get as it releases!

I remember reading Concrete issue ten when the eponymous hero had to visit his dying mother. It had me crying my eyes out. Thanks SO much for finally giving Chadwick the Kayfabe treatment. He’s one of the all-time greats and a favourite of mine.

My idea of a truly 'adult/mature' super hero comic is Concrete. Years ago I thought this might be the direction comic books would take but that hasn't developed. The book remains unique.

Really great episode on Paul Chadwick's "Concrete." Always a pleasure listening to Warren Bernard's commentaries along with insights from Jim and Ed. Thanks so much guys =). This is wishful thinking, but how about a feature on Rick Geary?

Met Paul Chadwick at Comic-Con in 2009. I loved _Concrete_ as a teen & lost my sh*t that he was there in person. Sitting alone at his signing table, it was upsetting to see this genius ignored & underappreciated. Bought a tpb off him & had it signed - could not believe that I had the chance to tell him how much _Concrete_ meant to me. A brilliant, beautiful title & thought-provoking anthology.

This was the first comic that showed me how well written a comic could be....not saying there weren't good writers and stories out there but Paul Chadwick felt like literature to me. Changed my perception of "comic books"

5:58 Godzilla, King of the Monsters by Steve Bissette and friends! I grew up with the rerelease in color, but the original that was just inks has a entirely different feel that makes Godzilla far more menacing. Worth checking out both for the side by side comparison. Also worth noting "GODZILLA" by Kazuhisa Iwata. All of this put out by Dark Horse Comics.

Thanks for bringing back awareness to this classic. Back in the early 00's Concrete, helped me back in track while I was going through a rough time. It's philosophical nature and beatiful art has a lot to do on how soothing for the soul it is.

Thank you so much for this review! I discovered Concrete in the 90s when the excesses of the big two were getting to be too much. I was blown away by the unique storytelling style and amazing draftsmanship! When I got back into comics a few years ago I had to buy his first appearance in Dark Horse Presents 1, as well as Concrete 1. I also got into Nexus, thanks for the mention!

I pre-ordered the new STREET ANGEL collection, new RED ROOM, and the HIP HOP FAMILY TREE omnibus the other day. Looking forward to all of them! Be well.

yeah haven't read all of it, but it's a rare comic where there is a fantastic element and the implications of it are explored seriously, and the emotional reactions of the characters are pretty realistic too. Super smooth attractive art too. Can also see what it has kind of faded out of view over time, very much a product of the 80s/90s direct market.

Welcome back to Warren! Always insightful!⚡️🎯 Concrete is definitely yet another course change for me and the comics I read! Articulate writer and artist,Paul started out strong in a subtle ways! Confident B&W narrative, short stories immediately won me over and the ongoing series later evolved into a collection of mini series! Paul with Charles Vess ,Moebius and Geoff Darrow collaboration on later covers definitely standout! I hope through the channel that Concrete/other Chadwick work will get some eyes👁👁on it! Very very underrated and recommended reading! 🎯👍❤️Keep reading and making comix!💎
