Mickey Mouse is a cartoon character created in 1928 at Walt Disney Animation Studios, who serves as the mascot of the Walt Disney Company. An anthropomorphic mouse who typically wears red shorts, large yellow shoes, and white gloves, Mickey is one of the world's most recognizable fictional characters.
Created as a replacement for a prior Disney character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Mickey first appeared in the short Plane Crazy, debuting publicly in the short film Steamboat Willie (1928), one of the first sound cartoons. He went on to appear in over 130 films, including The Band Concert (1935), Brave Little Tailor (1938), and Fantasia (1940). Mickey appeared primarily in short films, but also occasionally in feature-length films. Ten of Mickey's cartoons were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, one of which, Lend a Paw, won the award in 1942. In 1978, Mickey became the first cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Beginning in 1930, Mickey has also been featured extensively in comic strips and comic books. The Mickey Mouse comic strip, drawn primarily by Floyd Gottfredson, ran for 45 years. Mickey has also appeared in comic books such as Mickey Mouse, Disney Italy's Topolino and MM - Mickey Mouse Mystery Magazine, and Wizards of Mickey. Mickey also features in television series such as The Mickey Mouse Club (1955-1996) and others. He appears in other media such as video games as well as merchandising, and is a meetable character at the Disney parks.
Mickey generally appears alongside his girlfriend Minnie Mouse, his pet dog Pluto, his friends Donald Duck and Goofy, and his nemesis Pete, among others. Though originally characterized as a cheeky lovable rogue, Mickey was rebranded over time as a nice guy, usually seen as an honest and bodacious hero. In 2009, Disney began to rebrand the character again by putting less emphasis on his friendly, well-meaning persona and reintroducing the more adventurous and stubborn sides of his personality, beginning with the video game Epic Mickey.
Mickey Mouse was created as a replacement for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, an earlier cartoon character that was created by the Disney studio but owned by Universal Pictures. Charles Mintz served as a middleman producer between Disney and Universal through his company, Winkler Pictures, for the series of cartoons starring Oswald. Ongoing conflicts between Disney and Mintz and the revelation that several animators from the Disney studio would eventually leave to work for Mintz's company ultimately resulted in Disney cutting ties with Oswald. Among the few people who stayed at the Disney studio were animator Ub Iwerks, apprentice artist Les Clark, and Wilfred Jackson. On his train ride home from New York, Walt brainstormed ideas for a new cartoon character.
Mickey Mouse was conceived in secret while Disney produced the final Oswald cartoons he contractually owed Mintz. Disney asked Ub Iwerks to start drawing up new character ideas. Walt Disney got the inspiration for Mickey Mouse from a tame mouse at his desk at Laugh-O-Gram Studio in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1925, Hugh Harman drew some sketches of mice around a photograph of Walt Disney. These inspired Ub Iwerks to create a new mouse character for Disney. "Mortimer Mouse" had been Disney's original name for the character before his wife, Lillian, convinced him to change it, and ultimately Mickey Mouse came to be.
"I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing - that it was all started by a mouse."

Fact: Before foraying into video games, Nintendo manufactured decks of playing cards and yes, they included Disney characters on them.

Little known fact, Walt Disney never drew Mickey Mouse. The character was the creation of Ub Iwerks. Iwerks drew the cartoon “Steamboat Willie” that launched the Disney Company. Yet Disney accepted all of the kudos afterwards falsely leading many to believe that it was his creativity. In the late 30’s there was a party in Hollywood where major studio execs, wives and children were invited. Disney was there. A 12 year old girl came up to Disney with a piece of paper and pencil and ask Disney to draw Mickey Mouse for her. Iwerks was at the party. Disney finds Iwerks and tells him to draw Mickey Mouse on the paper. Disney then walks back over to the girl and signs it in front of her, giving her the impression that Disney drew it himself. This is Walt Disney in a nutshell. All his life he profited off of the labors and creativity of other people. And he never acknowledged the contributions of others.

If that's your summary of Walt, you really know very little about him. he wasn't a saint, but he did value his artists. He always acknowledged the talent in the studio, though not always by name-there was never any doubt that it was his name on the door. It's thanks to him that the tradition of continuing art classes still exist in ALL the studios today. I would encourage you to read the many interviews of the artists who worked for him.

That story about the Hollywood party has not been confirmed to be true. For all we know it was a rumor. Although it is true that there were tensions between Disney and Iwerks, such as changing the latter's exposure sheets and having more deadlines to meet. Pat Powers, the first distributor of Mickey Mouse cartoons tapped into that tension and offered Iwerks a chance to run his own studio to make a cartoon series for Powers. The resulting character, Flip the Frog, lasted only about three years and only thirty-three cartoons to his name. He was replaced by an imaginative boy liar named Willie Whopper- but he only lasted a little over a year with only _fourteen_ cartoons to his name. Eventually, Iwerks' studio folded in 1936. Meanwhile, Disney's studio was running well without Iwerks. Disney produced the first three-strip Technicolor film, created Goofy and Donald Duck, produced their first full-length animated movie, and won eight Oscars (not counting nine honorary Oscars). All of this happened before Iwerks finally returned in 1940. To quote Disney animator Ollie Johnston, "Ub designed Mickey's physical appearance, but Walt gave him his soul."
