General Motors used Bob’s song as the theme for their Chevy trucks for almost 20 years. It was everywhere on TV and radio. Bob always supported the autoworkers and gave a lot of money in support of unemployed autoworkers, during a time when the industry was going through a rough time. That’s why he is revered in the Midwest and especially in Michigan, where he is now retired. We miss your fabulous concerts Bob. Thanks for this review of the great Bob Seger. 👏👏

If I recall correctly, they brought a slide guitar player into the studio for this track. When he was finished with his first take (maybe his only take), there was stunned silence as all the recording engineers and other musicians absorbed this epic performance. Some people had tears in their eyes when it ended. I am sure that either Bob or another member of the Silver Bullet Band learned it so they could play it in concerts, but it still stands as a monumental slide guitar performance.

Funny story about this song; Several years ago I was at work when the boss asked me to drive two other employees to pick up a couple of trucks that had been in the shop. They were both young guys, probably late teens-early twenties. I always listened to classic rock radio and during that trip this song came on. One of the guys remarked, "I thought this was a Chevy commercial. I didn't know it was a real song." I was in my mid thirties at the time but in that moment I felt very old.

Gospel and blues rock. Bob Seger is a great bluesy singer and storyteller. I'd class him as "Heartland Rock," along with Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, John Cougar Mellencamp, etc. Have you heard Gordon Lightfoot? He's another storyteller, a little more folk based, from a few years earlier. "Sundown," "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," "If You Could Read My Mind," and "Carefree Highway."
