Becky, I received cinnamon ornaments at least 10 years ago as a gift from a child at church. Every year I put them away in snack size ziplocks and when I take them back out the next year, they smell SO GOOD! I love that you are making natural ornaments! I have tiny trees and gingerbread men.

One of my all time favorite memories I have as a child was when we'd get the Christmas tree up with the multi-colored lights, turn off all the overhead lights, and lay on the floor and look up at the ceiling and admire the different designs the Christmas lights made across the ceiling. I still do it every year at my own home. It was such a little moment, but one that stuck with me. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season!

I have one child, who is now 28 yrs old. Every year since birth he gets an ornament that represents something special or significant that happened that year, or when he was young, something he was really into or places we traveled. When he moved out, he had a wonderful collection of ornaments for his first tree on his own. In addition, it's like a trip down memory lane every year when he puts his tree up. Also, he can count on every year, one present to open on Christmas Eve which consists of new PJs and a new book. When he was little, it was always a Christmas book we would read together on Christmas Eve, with the thought that he would have some great books to read and pass on to his own children. After the age of 10 or so, it became a book of a topic he is interested in. The new PJs on Christmas Eve my mom started when we were little kids.

I inherited my 79 year old mother’s collection of ornaments. Our tree is a crazy hodgepodge of gifted, handmade and purchased ornaments from over 55 years of marriage. Now that I have my own family.. we are slowly replacing the headless ornaments from the old days and my children’s favorite thing is getting a new ornament representing them and what they are into that year. 45:45 Blood oranges might be a nice addition to the dried citrus slices on the tree next year. =) I agree that it’s so nice to enjoy the dark mornings/evenings by the light of the tree, candles, etc. Just wanted to include a heads up in case the dogs would try and eat the cinnamon apple ornaments - cinnamon is ok for dogs in really small amounts, but large doses are dangerous. Also, the hooks on the ornaments can be dangerous for dogs that chew on or eat things they shouldn’t.

Our dogs (3 naughty bassets) try and eat the whole tree, ornaments, lights and tree skirt, so we have to keep our tree in a separate room where we can see it through the internal glass doors! But wise words about all decorations and pets. Especially wrapped presents under the tree. I won't mention the present our elderly basset left under the tree one year (on a new beige carpet) 😂😳🤦‍♀️

I’ve had an artificial prelit tree for years, but the Christmas after my father passed away, I couldn’t bring myself to get out all of the ornaments and I needed a change. I bought a real tree, and the lights that looked like the old timey glass lights. I spray painted walnuts gold and hot glued a hook on them. I dehydrated apple and orange slices and hung them, then I collected some twigs from outside. I broke the twigs to the desired size and bundled them in threes with twine and hung them on the tree. It was beautiful and the perfect distraction and my younger boys enjoyed it too. We also strung popcorn for the tree. Thank you for a trip down memory lane! 💕🎄

I have a couple of family traditions that I cherish. When my husband & I had our first Christmas together, we bought a Hallmark ornament that said "Our first Christmas together" & it had the year. We have now been married for 36 years, celebrating Christmas 37 times together and have continued the tradition of picking out a new Hallmark ornament every year. It's so much fun getting out the ornaments each year and seeing what our interests were in the past. When our child was born, this tradition continued with their involvement. We went every year as a family to pick out that years' ornament. Great tradition, great memories! The second cherished tradition - my husband inherited a "Twas the Night Before Christmas" book from 1940. Every year we recorded my husband and our child sitting together while my husband read this to them. Interesting thing is, even at way past the age of what most children would be to try to get out of this tradition, our did not. I am so grateful for these traditions. Enjoy your traditions with your little one & husband. Time goes by quickly.

Hi Becky, the French silk pie is a family tradition for us. I made it for years and my son carried on making the pie every Thanksgiving and Christmas. I think the organic sugar was probably the biggest issue and then maybe the wisk. When I was making the pie I would cream the butter and sugar as you did then stirred in the melted bittersweet chocolate. My instructions then called for the eggs to be added one at a time beating for 5 min after each egg. That allowed for an increased volume. When all the eggs have been added fold in either 8 oz cool whip or 8oz whipped cream. ( We prefer whipped cream.) I one over whipped the filling during the summer and ended up with chocolate soup. I placed it in the refrigerator for 30 min and it whipped right up. I was then able to finish with the whipped cream. I usually finished it with whipped cream on top and chocolate shavings, always a hit!

Then I beat in the cooled chocolate and vanilla. Added the eggs two at a time, beating for 5 minutes after each. Covered it with plastic wrap and put it in the fridge for 3 hours. It turned out fantastic. No grainy sugar. Hope that helps!

Hello Becky! We have 3 main traditions in my family. My youngest son was born Dec 10th, and to make him feel a little more special, he always got to pick the tree all by himself. 2. We gave our 3 kids each a special ornament for Christmas and they put them on the tree each year. I still do that, but now it's for my 3 grandsons. 3 We make and decorate a gingerbread creation (so far there's been houses, a train, a monster truck and a snow couple!!) We pick the theme on Thanksgiving so grandma can gather the necessary bits. I love watching your videos and appreciate your candor and wholesome character. I have to confess, I especially love the marathon kitchen sessions the most! Wishing you and your family peace, joy and abundant blessings this Christmas and always!

I like the natural Christmas look! Since baby acre is little - a fun tradition is to make an ornament a year - then also you’ll have ones from him he makes in school - do a homemade ornament tree maybe for your sunroom (because it’s more eclectic) he will see them every year with memories attached to each - then when he has his own first tree give him the ornaments. I would like to mention that your style is pretty - like my daughter-in-laws - everything perfect and matchy. But it’s heart breaking when proud little ones bring home their decorations they’ve work hard on & are proud of and the don’t take center stage because they “mess up” the “perfect” tree.

@lisablackwelder7590. I don’t measure the sugar. I just throw in some sugar, mix a batch and measure out what I need. The rest I store in a gasket seal container till I need it next time. I use it quite often to make my own Marzetti slaw dressing.

What a lovely video, Becky! Your home looks beautiful and cozy! We went from a full house with a full size tree until a few years ago, when we went empty nest. We gave away our lighted tall tree and got a lighted small tree. We place it on a short sleigh and use my husband's grandmother's quilted tree wrap. Our ornament level has gone way down with accents of red and gold, but our lighted angel still sits at the top. I love it! After the presents are arrayed around the sleigh, it is enchanting! Really enjoyed that, Becky. I've never heard of the World Market (I live in Connecticut). Probably just as well there isn't one near me. I have too many holiday decorations already! But many of them are family heirlooms with a great deal of meaning to me so out they come every year. My grandmother started one of our family traditions by hanging personal family "memories" on our tree. My rattle has hung on all my trees since I outgrew it as a baby (I'm 68 so that's a lot of trees!). My Dad's dog tags from WW II. Things like that and always hung near the top. It brings back sweet memories when decorating my tree each year. Most of those loved ones are gone now so it's even more meaningful to me. It gives me such a warm, comforting feeling each year. This will be such a special holiday season for you and Josh now that Baby Acre will be with you. He's going to be so entranced by all the lights! Enjoy every precious moment, Becky. ☃❄⛄

My mother always used a white sheet fluffed around the trunk as a tree skirt. It looks like snow. I do that now on one of my tabletop trees. My main tree is a Victorian tree, and I have a pink and gold tree skirt for that. I have another tree in my dining room that is my White House tree. I've been collecting the annual White House ornaments for a number of years, so I guess that's sort of a tradition. I really like the basket you chose for the base of your tree. 😊

My dad grew up on a farm with 13 or more siblings. While he was alive we went every year to that farm, my uncle then owned, and cut down a fresh tree. It gave him a piece of home. Eventually as mom grew older she bought the artificial tree. Less mess and could stay up longer. In my own family we have used both over the years.

I love Christmas! Your tree and baking and everything looks so beautiful! My favorite traditions are making chorag (a recipe from my mom’s friend who is Armenian, but the friend’s recipe seems to have been adapted from the traditional one to include a brown sugar and walnut filling), decorating the tree, and walking around the neighborhood enjoying the lights with a cup of hot cocoa. One particular favorite that baby acre might enjoy is that we have a family friend who gives me and my sister the Newbury and Caldecott award winning children’s books each year. I love them and although I don’t have kids I share them with my students and I know my sister will probably pass her book collection along to her kids one day. I have them going back to the year I turned one! It was a great foundation for my bookshelf as a kid, too. Also, even now as an adult, I have to watch the Disney Christmas sing along songs video at least once each Christmas 😆

How exciting to have baby’s first Christmas! They love to look at all the lights. Your tree turned out so nice with the homemade ornaments. I have a mini 2 cup crock pot or warmer and I put thin slices of orange and lemon rind in it with a couple cinnamon sticks a few cloves one apple quartered and leave it on all day to scent the house with holiday baking smells, just add more water throughout the day if you need to

The tree is really nice. We have had real trees and artificial trees. I think I counted 14 a few years ago. I decorated every room at one time. The older I get the less I want to do when it comes to all the decorations. We will have an artificial tree in our family room because of the fireplace. This year we are going to the tree farm and cutting a fresh tree for the front room. Traditions include the ornament workshop at our local small town library, Christmas parade, decorating gingerbread houses, painting ornaments, making Christmas cookies and candies for gifting to neighbors and friends, and watching all our favorite Christmas movies through December.

The French Silk pie was probably supposed to use a super fine sugar. Your decorations are so pretty and make your home more cozy. I’m also trying to slowly trade all my decor to more neutral tones. I’ve chosen cream, champagne, a little rose and very little wine red. My tree is the same Costco tree as yours and my garlands are also green. These are my base colors throughout the year and I can add tiny touches of other colors depending on the season and holiday. Sure wish there was a WorldMarket near me! I’ve been searching for new fabric placemats for a couple years now.

Becky, you may want to keep this idea in your files for a future Christmas with your little one. We always got a cedar tree from a farm nearby because we couldn't afford to buy one. One Christmas my Mom had us get together and make ornaments with different things(toothpicks, popsicle sticks, etc.). She also used construction paper cut into strips made into a chain to go around the tree like garland. She made sugar cookie dough we cut into shapes and decorated, wrapped them in plastic wrap with a twist tie at the top which was also used to attach to the tree. Almost everything was homemade. There was one thing that was not homemade, a angel my youngest brother and his friend found at a place people had dumped some stuff out. He brought it home, she cleaned it up and plugged it in to see if all the lights worked. They did. The only thing that you could say was wrong with it was the wings had curved around the angel's head and body some. We used that angel for many years and never had to replace the bulbs in it. Just an idea how old it is... I was about 6 when we done that tree and I am now 56. When I got married 21 years ago she gave it to me to use on my tree. It still works. That was and still is my favorite tree. Love your videos.

Takes an assembly line to do but SOO worth it. Anyone knowing our fanily awaits a gift of some so the 159 plus wev make are needed! And fruitcake jokes aside ny moms dark fruitcake made in October and wet with brandy over 2 months is fab!! I make every other year and freeze the rest. The fruits used are inly candied pineapple, raisins and dried cranberries, less candied cherries and walnuts! Toped with cascade iof white confectionary icing and candies fruit in shape of poinsettia.

Organic sugar is coarser, as you said. I think I would just pulse it several times in the Cuisinart prior to using. You should be able to feel the difference in the two sugars. The beater bar could very well have also affected the butter/sugar blend since they were both room temperature. I’m sure it would have been tasty!

Becky, Fall and Winter are my absolute favorite seasons. The beauty of the turning leaves that the bof the winter (especially with snow) as nature slumbers is just so breathtaking to me. You will soon find out, Christmas decor will be dictated by your children. I have always decorated every room in my house for Christmas but when my kids came along it just gets a little whimsical. I prefer clear lights and they always wanted color. So our main tree was titled our, “Family” tree which had multicolored lights and the tree in our den was my tree with clear bulbs that I decorated how I want. (They each had their own tree in their bedroom to decorate however they wanted) As soon as kids came into our lives then each year we purchased an ornament for them dictating what transpired in their lives over the year. It started with “Baby’s First Christmas, mastering “potty training” to having braces, getting drivers then HS graduation, etc. The reason I did this was so when they moved out they already had ornaments for their very 1st. Christmas tree. However, one by one as they left our nest they each wanted their childhood ornaments to stay behind and would only take the ones they had gotten from their college years to present…yes, I still buy them an ornament each year. Their reasoning for leaving their childhood ornaments behind…so a that we continue to always come together and decorated the “Family” tree. We now have grandchildren hanging❤ their ornaments up on the “Family” tree ❤

My favorite tradition involves just me and its my Christmas tree. I was given our artificial tree from my grandparents shortly before they both passed away (both had cancer). Each year, I decorate it with a different theme. I spend all year thinking and brainstorming and then buy 1 new set of baubles and then make some complimenting ornaments. Throughout the whole process, I'm reminiscing about my grandparents.

Becky, I am just catching up on your videos after a hectic holiday season. You asked about family traditions and I have just the thing to start with your little one. When I was a toddler Santa gave me a present with a super large Christmasy Snowman scene. It was addressed to “the little lady of the house”. I get that same tag on a present every year ( I’m 52 years old) from my Mom. It’s had some damage (dog ate some of it in 1992) all documented on the back. I love it to this day. It’s just not Christmas without getting it. Of course it’s now inside a present wrapped in a protective cover but it still means so much to me. By the way, my brother has one too but his is older ( He’s 57). Did you start a special tradition with your little one this year?

I started a tradition late in life. One that I wish I'd started much earlier. One year I dressed the dining room tablecloth with fabric ink pens. I had family and friends sign the cloth with their names, the date, and a drawing. My dear sweet Daddy drew his hand on the tablecloth and had me write each family member's name on his hand. We lost Daddy a few years ago and that tablecloth means the world to me.

Hi, Becky! As for the gritty silk pie filling, I bet it's because of your sugar! If the sugar doesn't dissolve after a day in the fridge, I would take it out and try slowly warming it (while whisking constantly) over a double boiler. Keep the double boiler at a very low heat! When the sugar finally melts (and now the eggs will be pasteurized, too!), take it off the heat and continue whisking. It will probably make a nice pudding... 🤞🤞🤞

We also make the cinnamon ornaments, but we add a few tbl spoons of glue to the dough. I find that it helps them hold together better with fewer breaks. We also roll them out fairly thick, and usually air dry them for 24 to 48 hours instead of baking them, if time allows. If not, we bake them the way you did. I use them as gift tags too, and use either a gold or white paint pen to write on them and add the date. We also make the fur babies dog treat ornaments shaped like bones that they can actually eat! Imagine me with 6 grands all "helping" me! Nothing makes me happier!

I’m in Australia, and it’s hot. We decorate the backyard fence with Christmas lights and eat outside on really thick timber furniture, that takes 4 men to move. We string lights from the house to poles we put up over these tables and benches. BBQ meats outside to keep the house cool and mass production of salads happens Christmas Eve. I have 5 grown up children and at least two arrive Christmas Eve so we all chop up ingredients together. Carols by candlelight happens at our local sports field and the whole community goes( our town has about 4000 residents and with all the “kids” coming home with their kids it’s a time to catch up with those who are away at university or for work. We make lemonade scones with jam and cream Christmas morning and fresh juiced orange, carrot and ginger juice. We take the littles to the beach and use all their new towels and cosies and toys. Lunch is cold ham leg, cold chicken, prawns (shrimp) and salads with leftovers for days. Imagine the smell of sunscreen and that’s what Christmas smells like here.

Hey Becky! Our family traditions are to go pick out our Christmas tree and time ourselves to see how quickly we can find the perfect one and compete against our previous year's times. It is funny how silly a competition against yourself can become! Then we would go home and make and decorate our Christmas sugar cookies and all of the family favorite cookie recipes and then stick them in the freezer once they were done baking and cooling so they would be ready to pull out on Christmas day. After that, we would decorate the house and the Christmas tree while listening to Christmas music. When we were little, my parents would read us Christmas stories. As we got older, it became watching our favorite Christmas movies and drinking hot cocoa together. Doing these things little by little each weekend before Christmas helped build up the anticipation and spirit of the season, and they are some of my fondest family memories.

I've always cooked for Christmas, our Christmas is in the middle of Summer it could be 100° so we don't get the snow and everything else like you guys do so sometimes we'll have a cold lunch not a traditional hot lunch I started doing a maple syrup and Dijon Mustard glaze on my ham and ever since then my son's insist that I do it every year this is been going on now for about 10 years. And look out if I forget the ham😂😂 the sugar that you mix for your cake but we're still grainy you could have used caster sugar witches a lot finer and it probably would have mixed down even with the whisk. The Cinnamon Ornaments dough seems a little dry to me? I probably isn't it just looks it. I love all your cooking, you are amazing. I’m 61 & I use to also do a lot of cooking when I was younger. A burlap ribbon would look nice and rustic to go with the cookies and citrus. Then take brown paper to wrap the gifts in and stencil something rustic on it. You can use a potato to make it and dip it in some paint. Thin (watery) so it drys fast. I usually do themed trees every year, just for the fun of it. Last year it was The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. I made everything. I might do sweaters, mittens and hats etc. (little ones) and the theme would be Baby it's cold outside. Sweaters all have the dates on the back from CJBanks, and the rest I made. Plant a tree outside and as your baby grows put things on it the birds can eat. It's lovely to do it every year and such beautiful memories. You can make your own shapes out of old cookie cutters to hang on the tree. Love your tree and the basket under it. I want one, and have never seen that one. No fancy stores where I live.
