In today's video I finally got the Chinese diesel heater repaired and working after having issues with it previously. It seems that the green pipe the kits come with are a load of crap so I would defiantly recommend changing this out for the white harder nylon pipe.

I HATE DIESEL HEATERS! Guys, I've got to be honest. This video is a LIE! After testing and running the heater for about 15 minutes I thought it was working as you can see from the video. I then drove down to see some friends and went to test the heater in the evening and ONCE AGAIN it came up with Error-08. I thought it was fixed and running correctly but it was still having the same issues as before. I have now and more recently changed the fuel filter so its the correct way round (thanks for all the comments letting me know) and also bought a fitting kit from Ebay which is has a metal pipe that will go into the diesel sender unit which I am confident should solve the issues. I'm waiting for this to arrive in the post so will install it early this week and will update you in a future video once I have it 100% up and running. I had a similar problem with my diesel heater when I first installed it, if you haven't already it's worth trying it with the air intake silencer removed, I found mine was restricting the air flow enough to cause problems (and lots of white smoke - generally speaking, white smoke like you had means you've got fuel but not enough air). You can also adjust the settings on the controller to increase the fan speed which might help too.

I just remembered today: a friend of mine has a same kind of heater. He didn't get it to work reliably pulling the fuel from the tank, and ended up using the small reservoir above the burner, so he gets gravity assist for it. One more point: if your burners fuel line gets cut for reason or another, it might form a siphon that pulls your whole tank empty. If you can, use separate tank (big enough for overnight operation) above the burner to get the assist; use the current fuel line with two button (requiring both buttons held down while filling to prevent accidental overfill) operated electric fuel pump filling up that secondary reservoir from the main tank (or a separate jerry can, so you can use cheaper heating oil). Just never try to pour fill the secondary tank, any splashes will stink forever. Catch container for leaks is a very good idea. Before any of that, check Toby M's comment, it is really worth investigating.

Well done Will. 2 points to note. Rigid stand pipe into the fuel tank, the nylon pipe just curls so no way of knowing how much is in the fuel itself. Point 2, I would have stuck with the 2 KW heater. These heaters need servicing every now and again which basically means decoking them. The 2 KW has to work harder meaning burning hotter which means less soot in the burn chamber of the heater. Your van is quite small so 2 KW is more than enough. I made the mistake of putting an 8 KW in my camper and it's too much. Minus 5 outside one night and ended up having to turn our heater off, it was too hot and only on tickover so not burning any of the carbon in the chamber. Loving the channel mate. Keep going and never give up. You have learnt so much already and still a way to go.

Well done mate! The 2kW heater in my van is actually slightly overkill after 10 minutes of it running. I can't imaging what a 5KW is like in such a small space to be honest, so don't get rid of the 2kW just yet. Yes, you can turn it down, but 'Low' on the 5kW may still be too much, forcing you to keep turning it off an on all the time.
@blackcataps
@blackcataps 2 года назад
Couldn’t agree more. My 2kw once up to temp is often to warm and I to can’t imagine how hot a 5kw would be. As for the error messages I had the exact same ones until I swapped green fuel line for the solid white. Been fine ever since a year later.

Note about nylon, even if it doesn't matter in this situation: nylon is hygroscopic, which means that it absorbs moisture even from air and swells. Nylon for bushings can be a bad idea, depending on where it is used. Edit: make the lines neat and so that the first bush you ride over doesn't pull them with it.
@kinross24
@kinross24 2 года назад
The new nylon hose you poked into the tank will have just curled up in the tank and not near the bottom but likely near the top and could also suck air if tank levels are low. Should have a proper ridged pipe fitted to the tank and then hose into that

Don't forget to fit a couple of fire extinguishers, one in the cab and one in the back (I didn't spot one anywhere). They are cheap enough off Amazon. Vehicle fires turn nasty very quickly from either fuel or electrics. My insurance doesn't cover fires that start in the habitation area, don't know if this is normal but better safe than sorry.

When you put the fuel pipe in the fuel tank make sure its at least an inch from the bottom. Last thing you want is your heater drinking all the vehicles fuel leaving you empty.

That fuel filter is definitely setup backwards. Also the 2kw heater is more than enough for the van. Bottom line is switch out the fuel filter & hook it up correctly then its all good from there. The 5kw is made for -0 to -40 ℃ in that space. Also get extra glow plugs and learn how to replace them because if you don't burn all the soot inside the heater you will be replacing them sooner rather than later. 5kw will heat that van up to the point that it will be uncomfortable in all but the most apocalyptic British winter.
@matthewpearce864
@matthewpearce864 2 года назад
I'm not sure if anyone else has pointed it out, but I'd also reposition the exhaust of the heater. It looks like it is pointing a little to far forward - when you're driving it'll collect a fair amount of water if it's raining, plus you won't be able to run the heater while driving with the airflow going into the exhaust. Just try and point facing rearwards if you can. Great videos Will!

the fuel line should be between 1.5 & 2 meters long no longer as it may lose pressure to check it use a shorter length of fuel pipe if that turns out to be the problem you may need to use the diesel tank provided with the kit. I did mine no problems best of luck solving your problem.

Nice job. Although I would advise to use the 2kw heater. The bigger heater will be running to low most of the time which causes it to seize up inside with unburdened fuel and ash. Running a heater on a higher setting reduces that risk because it burns itself clean. Cheers;)

filter is definitely backwards unfortunately, larger space as inlet side, smaller side outlet as there will be flow restriction from the filter. I suggest using the thicker green hose from tank to filter to pump, then thin nylon hose pump to heater. Always best to have surplus fuel supply to pump so its not working too hard.
@bluej511
@bluej511 2 года назад
@@angusrobinson7032 those pumps are pretty rubbish anyways to be honest. It uses the fuel as lubrication thats why it must be tilted and not horizontal. But if it works I dont see an issue. As long as the hose is straight in the tank and not curled or anything should be fine.

Since you’ve installed a heater in your van I presume you will be using it in cold weather. I don’t know a whole lot about it but I understand that diesel fuel is prone to gelling and freezing in cold weather . Since that plastic pipe seems to be very exposed is not of some concern that it may be adversely affected in cold weather ? Personally I would have used a pipe of a more robust material , possibly copper or the same steel pipe they use for brake lines and considered some sort of insulation of the fuel,line. Love watching your videos it’s good to see it all without all the errors edited out. Keep em coming 😃

Well done Will 👍 I have to agree with other comments re level 5 or level 2. The room is roughly 8ft x 6ft i.e. incredibly small ! You wont need massive heat production. I had a gas heater in an old van and I could only have it on for about 5 mins before the van was overly hot. Had to turn it off for about 2 hours before turning on again. Best to have a low, but more constant, heater. Anyway, trial and error are your best bet 😃

I am sure you already know if you fill you fuel tank it will leak out of the hole you have the fuel line going into the sender. You need one of these cut a few inches short so you Dont run out of fuel. You problem now could be the plastic pipe going into your tank curling up and the end is not in the fuel ,that why you need this.

Will I don’t know if you know but you can get A Silencer to fit in to your Exhaust it won’t totally Silence but it will be Quieter. If you get one to fit it just cut the exhaust pipe fairly near the Exhaust end the right length cut out fit in the Silencer make sure it’s connected properly then secure to the underside of your van.

Hi Will, I personally would put some kind of cable wrap/guard around that feed pipe bit like the computer cable tidy stuff. Looks a bit vulnerable to me. Great vids btw.

Hi will you would be better off putting solid pipe into van fuel tank as it reaches the bottom of tank as plastic pipe will curl up in tank and end will suck air when tank is not full hope this helps

Hey mate, congrats for that new milestone 😉 Regarding your filter, it seems to be the wrong way because on these types of filters, usually made with a fabric/paper filter system, pressure can make it dilate and tear if flow is going from the inside to the outside of the filter (the cone shape make it harder the other way). And because of that shape, the filtration surface area is greater from the outside than the inside... Some of these filters have a tiny part filtering the output to catch up any of the filtering material to flow out as well. But, from what I can see, it's a metallic filtering system that you got there therefore not sure any of that matters. Personally, I would change it for a fabric one and change its way of course. Please, be nice about my English as I'm French 😁 Have fun tho 👍

Huh? I wired in the cheap pipe that came with it into the tank and it's been fine for years. I'd rather have a 5KW you can turn down than a 2KW you can't turn up - I learnt that one winter! :(

Hi Will just be carefull from what we could see the plastic fuel line is still above the exhaust from the heater never put anything that can melt above an exhaust pipe even if there seems to be a reasonable air gap 🤔 Love the channel hope to see you on the road we'll be doing Scotland to see the new year in 😮 Mark and Lynda 🚙😁

I had a feeling you would rest the pipe on the exhaust sooner or later! 😬 you never let us down haha. Well done getting it all working yourself though, must feel a great accomplishment. My only concern would be I would probably have sleeved the pipeline to protect against heat from your main exhaust when sat idling in traffic in summer etc, and also to protect from stones flying up or snagging on bushes etc, even if it was only some metal tape over it or something, I’ve never done anything like that but just what I’d consider for extra protection, might help with fuel viscosity in winter too if it causes any problems for the heater.

Hi Will, when you fit the metal pipe make sure it doesnt go all the way to the bottom of the tank.Firstly that will stop dirt on the tank bottom getting into the feed to the heater and more importantly it will mean that the heater cant use all your diesel and leave you stranded if off grid somewhere. good luck
@JazzFunkNobby1964
@JazzFunkNobby1964 Год назад
The fuel filter will stop any dirt getting to the heater. That's what it's for.
@michaelstevens9394
@michaelstevens9394 Год назад
@@JazzFunkNobby1964 lol but will also clog with crap deoending on age of vehicle a lot quicker plus there is another reason ie not using the last of your fuel.

@JazzFunkNobby1964 Год назад
@@michaelstevens9394 You were wrong to say that dirt from the bottom of the tank would get to the heater and you were again wrong in your last comment suggesting the fuel filter will 'also' clog. There's no 'also.' The filter is the only thing that would clog. Lol.
