thank you for this. After watching this video and almost buying the older version and getting confused from his original video, my head was spinning about what if I was using a PD clip. Now this is a good solution to leverage.
Holy balls. Just you demoing how one plate works with everything... I need this now. Been trying to make Peak Design's arca-LIKE plate work on other tripod heads and it's giving me way too much trouble.
The previous ball head had greater compatibility since it was Arca Swiss. If you want to add F38 compatibility all you have to do is put an F38 baseplate into the Arca Swiss clamp.
A couple of times I searched B&H for carbon fiber tripods. Although they sell Ulanzi the Ulanzi travel tripods didn’t come up Then When I specifically searched B&H for the Ulanzi Zero Y, their website said “discontinued” …. despite it being available in several other places, ie that’s false. Either their system has as an accidental mistake, or a deliberate one.
Thank you for this ,I might just buy the F38 baseplate into the Arca Swiss Clamp of the Zero Y, that way if Ulanzi goes out of business I still have the Arca Swiss tripod... I think this is better than the new F38 tripod option
I just spent $70 on the Peak Design Camera Clip so the fact it doesn't play well with the F38 quick release mechanism is a deal killer for me. So bummed about that!
Ulanzi has a plate that's compatible with both. You would only be able to slide it in to either mount in one direction though. I plan to have my camera slide in to the PD clip from the front. When I use the tripod, it will slide in sideways.
@@BopjoWebDesign ulanzi plates work on other heads, but other plates don't work on ulanzi head. Very sneaky because the other way or complete compatibility is what you really want. That's why I had to return it even it is lighter and cheaper than pd, and has a panning head. With many regular arca type plates around my camera bag, I know one day I will find myself rely ulanzi but no plate will fit because I will have mixed all plates.
Hey David! Can't believe I found you on RU-vid haha I'm Blake Herrmann's little brother. I met you and Tim about 10 years ago. You and he inspired me, and now I'm a professional photographer myself! I shoot Real Estate exclusively. Good to see you doing well here on RU-vid :D
How tight (not secure, I have no doubt it is secure) the quick release plate is in the ball head. One of the reason for instance I prefer Arca Swiss over older plates is the there is always some play between the plate and the ball head. Not with Arca Swiss. Is the F38 as tight as Arca Swiss?
Love the tripod. It doesn't hold a heavy slider under high pressure, but that is more than to be expected that it wouldn't hold that. But overall, really small, for a tripod that goes super high.
you forget to mention that these plate ALWAYS need to be tghten again and again. whereas an arca swiss is maybe a tiny bit bulkier, it's rock steady and the Ulanzi Zero has the perfect arca swiss head, works in landscape and portrait. hands down the best solution
Thank you for your video. Until now I’ve used Arca Swiss for my cameras and tripods. I decided to buy the F38 version for my new travel tripod with my compact Sony 7Cx cameras to keep them smaller. We will see how it goes since I’ve also bought the F38 for shoulder bag attachments. Take care.
Yes, Peak Design is expensive. But they also ensure all their products are made in places that have good working conditions in terms of treatment, pay, and safety, and are conscious that materials and methods used are environmentally conscious if that's important to you. Yes, some of the cost is their brand, but some is extra cost for the reasons above. (I'm not necessarily advocating for their tripod though. Quite happy with their bags though.)
hi David, that does now seem to be the most epic tripod. its great that you can buy just the ball head too - in case folks bought the previous tripod. that was some forward thinking. dude i would be very interested in in the bag clip system - please do a video about this, i tried looking into this with no idea what to actually search for! but you, my man, i will wait for your video. your little outtakes at the end always make me chuckle. excellent video, nice work my friend. catch you soon.
Funny story, I actually ordered that version of the tripod with the F38 quick release without even realizing it. Saw your video comparison, went on their website and noticed it was on sale for $299. Thought it was the same one - so I said cool, that’s a great price an ordered it. Only then realized it was a pre-order because it’s the new one. Says it’s shipping as of tomorrow so we’ll see but yeah man, excited to get it.
this tripod is priced at something around $200. to be honest, if you know how to use taobao, you can get basically all these Chinese photo, video products like smallrig, tilta, apature, sirui, etc, at 30~40% off price at any time. just need some extra shipping time( usually 1 week air or 4 week sea) and may got a little bit delay with warranty service. But saving at 30% or more, I really don't care about warranty, if something broken I will just get a new one especially when studio usually buys a lot at once. Huge saving on cash
Look awesome, I would still use only the Arca Swiss. I would have bought it when I saw your previous video if it was easier to get in Canada. Nice work love your videos.
For clarity: can I just buy the F38 quick release bottom mount and top plate and install that on the original Ulanzi Model Y travel tripod with the arca swiss?
Good review and comparison of the two tripods! I’d prefer to use my existing Arca Swiss plates and L Brackets…and I know you had mentioned it, but wanted to confirm… Only the Zero Y model will accept any Arca Swiss plates, correct?
I was considering attach Ulanzi quick release plate on the bottom of my L bracket. I think it will work with the F38 system. I have not ordered mine yet
Hey brother I watch every video I can! You make me laugh your videos are dope. I’m a huge Ulanzi/Falcam fan have just about every Falcam quick release product have the top handle have a bunch of F38 arca Swiss plates so I gotta tell ya though I have the gen 1 Ulanzi/Coman tripod definitely love it and here’s the secret 🤫 F38 plates fit on the gen 1 tripod I’ve tried it already just keep F38 plates on camera or whatever gear and place included tripod plate neatly in your drawer somewhere and bam you have almost same thing! Just have to turn the knob instead of pushing a button 😆 for those who have purchased gen 1 and maybe don’t want to spend the extra dough….you’re welcome
this video was great... i just picked this up from Amazon Japan for approximately $210... gotta love black friday deals! i also subbed to the channel. look forward to more great content.
Great Review! I use the F38 Tripod (Awesome customer service, and stock a warehouse in NJ - got my order on the West Coast in a week USPS.) LOVE it! For some cross compatibility I have a F38 camera plate screwed into a Arca Swiss base plate on top. Anything now with Arca Swiss fits. Rock solid, NO play on the A7R3 with 24-105 G lens.. I get that it would be great to have the base plate compatible with Arca Swiss, but that's one work around. Another is using the free 1/4" post and building a second fav Arca Swiss set up. ....and woohoo - the camera F38 base plate fits Arca Swiss as well.
I was about to buy the peak design carbon fiber 600 dollars tripod, I was just one click to buy it, but something told me why you don't search in RU-vid a comparison between peak design aluminium and carbon fiber, suddenly I searching in RU-vid I found your video between ulanzi and peak design carbon fiber comparison, after watching that video it was obvious which tripod should I buy. thanks man you save me 300 bucks not only because the tripod is cheaper but also because your discount code.
5:09 - that's a lot of poppin' and slappin'... 🤣 Awesome review, man! I'm going on a 6-month round the world trip here soon, and Ulanzi may just be my new best friend! (I mean, after my wife and kids...)
I use a bunch of the F38 quick release mounts on everything I own even my phone mount in my car has one of these 🤣 There's a smaller version F22 which is a quick release mount for small things such as magic arms, handles or other accessories. I still want one of these tripods so might sell my current one so I can gave one of these. I love all the Ulanzi stuff!
I love your chanel and your videos...but when you do a review on a tripod, you have to show it all the way open, with a camera on it, to review if it is steady or if it will fall with some wind. Stability is a main factor for a trpod :)
Damn right David tells it how it is. Otherwise I’d kick his booty. Now now, before I start getting death threats, no need. I’d never hurt David, he’s just too nice of a guy. You really should subscribe to his channel and watch all his past videos. Good guy, family man, “like”, subscribe, and share his videos. Who said 300 000? One million…here we come!
Very cool. I remember when you released that first video I was looking at that tripod, but I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger just yet. I am definitely in need of a new tripod, and this just might be the one. Great review of all the pieces, as always!
I just bought the Zero y. im glad I can just get the upgraded ball head with the quick release. not sure I will though. I think I will be good with the way it is now.
Is Falcam the same as F38? I wish companies would only have 1 name for 1 system (There are already more different systems around than anyone would want, without adding any more potential confusion)
Yep, Falcam makes the F38 system. They have a whole quick release lineup and the number is the size. So F22, F38, and F50 are the different sizes all made by Falcam
I love my Zero Y, but to add the cost and complexity of F38 to the already really nice Arcs-Swiss isn't something I wanna take on. I already have several tripod that support Arco-Swiss. Thanks for the review!
Great series of videos on this tripod. But is the head you keep referring to actually a BALL head - meaning can it move from horizontal to vertical, around different axis, etc. or is it just a plate attached to a center column? Thanks!
I am getting annoyed by having like 3 different ways to mount all my GoPro stuff The buckle I only use to mount to my scooter, wish it was quick release. I do need a way to have a backpack strap temporarily hold my GoPro.. but it would also be attached to a small stick.
What about Snap Mounts with their Locking Adapter? You could have the locking adapter on your scooter, the regular adapter on your backpack strap and a regular or locking adapter on a pole mount
I really don't see the point of a whole new quick-release ecosystem when there are so many Arca-Swiss compatible, clamp-based receivers. It doesn't look noticeably more compact (which is probably good for stability purposes). Arca Swiss plates are way, way more common.
To be clear with this, the F38 plates are still Arca Swiss compatible👍 So if you have the F38 system, but then you want to throw your camera on one of your other tripods, you absolutely can without needing to swap plates. But, when within the F38 line of products, your camera has a really easy mount/dismount and is super secure
in the size of mirroless realm, I feel like ulanzi's falcam quick release system might dominate!! Hey how does tripod stand against strong wind in the highest position?
Looks like they might of discontinued the original arcs Swiss version. Their site says can’t ship to USA and I can’t find it even listed anywhere else. Only the new quick release version. That sucks.
F38 is a nice quick release system but I have so many accessories with Arca swiss, especially my camera cage bottom that is Arca swiss. So no go for this tripod.
Not true arca swiss. These ulanzi plates can go to other heads, but other plates cannot go on this head, even when the little screws are removed. My experiences have told me only go to real arca swiss. They meant professional design and makes life much easier. I have a couple of none arca swiss tripods laying around and plates are missing. I'm willing to pay a few hundred more for true arca swiss.
I listened to your review and ordered it after I already ordered peak design. Waste of time. Hope your reviews can tell this, not lying on it and get us in trouble
Yeah, if your L bracket has a built in Arca Swiss Plate, then for sure go for the Ulanzi tripod that is arca Swiss, but for mounting a plate to the bottom of the camera, the F38 system is amazing!
I would rather have something that works with my Ellie PD Three-Legged thing L bracket... Because what is better than an L Bracket that you can also use with a peak design clip?
Is there an F38 back to Arca Swiss screw plate option? At the moment having to us ONLY F38 plates is why I just ordered the arca swiss version -- the several seconds it takes to screw in the camera outweighs the flexibility of swapping from cell phone mount to camera to gopro etc
Oh man, I'm sorry you missed that bit in the video. The F38 plate is ALSO arca-swiss. Just like the Peak Design plate is also arca-swiss. So to use each system's quick release, you need their plate, but both of their quick release plates work with arca-swiss. Does that make sense?
@@DavidManningvlog That makes sense and I understood that from the video - maybe I wasn't clear in what I was describing, let me try again. Having an adapter come with the tripod like this: arca swiss clamp on top with a F38 plate on the bottom - that way I can use a regular arca swiss item on the F38 ball head without necessarily having F38 plates on everything. Obviously its something that could be easily cobbled together but it'd be cool to come from Ulanzi with that flexibility
Do you mind if I borrow the peak designs tripod? I’ll pay for the shipping back-and-forth but I just want to get my hands on it and try it out for myself.
I got the F38 version and now I'm trying to do everything to change it to standard one. I'm won't change all of my arca swiss plates just for a tripod :(
The F38 plate also works with your other arca Swiss mounts, but you're right that your other arca Swiss plates will not work with the F38 version. The F38 plates are only $12 though, so that's nice
The f38 plate that you put on your camera is also arcs Swiss compatible. So you can use this tripod with the quick release AND any of your other arca Swiss mounts seamlessly👍
I already have the pgytech quick release system. I know it fits the peak design tripod. But since I want to get the Ulanzi’s, I’d like to know if pgytech plate will fit the update ulanzi tripod
In the last video you showed how it is possible to tilt the head a little *without* extending the center column. Is the same possible with the F38 head please? I asked ulanzi directly but they ignored my question completely...
@@DavidManningvlog that is great, thank you! Now if only did they sell it to the EU... I feel a bit betrayed by Ulanzi, they did sell all the other F38 gear to me but the product page of this tripod says "This product can't be shipped to EU." Seeing it is actually refined from the non-F38 model I do not want to buy the (slightly different) travel tripod + the head alone.
You mean the hammered texture look? If it makes you feel better, V1 has a better hidden tool in my opinion. And the difference between the V1 and V2 versions is mostly cosmetic. No actual differences that change how the tripod operates or performs👍
GAH! I literally just ordered the old version last week! It literally hasn't arrived. Just wrote to Ulzani to ask if I can exchange it since I literally haven't even received the current one... let's see how they customer service is...
Alas since the order was completed, they didn't give me an option to replace it. Even if they had, international shipping would likely had made it more expensive than just getting the new head. They did however give me a 10% discount on the new head so I feel that was a reasonable compromise given it was not their fault just bad timing.
Gotta admit, their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. So it's been 3 weeks since I ordered the replacement head (at my expense) and they still haven't shipped it. Contacted them last week, and they said it would be another 3-5 days, 8 days later not a peep. Wrote to them again this morning. I get that their 14 day return policy doesn't account for a timing error of ordering the older version of the tripod just a week before the new one was released, but you'd think that for a tripod costing almost $400 they would be a bit better about standing behind their products. Luckily it is quite some time till my next vacation, but it is still not been a great experience with them...
Update: The replacement head arrived today and it is everything that I was hoping for. I do have a warning for anyone that contacts Ulanzi: beware them telling you to buy the f38 quick-release head bundled with a zero 1/4 center rod. When I spoke with the customer service rep about replacing the other tripod with the new version (which they denied despite not even being delivered yet), he pointed me to this more expensive bundle as what I would need to replace the head. To be clear: the Zero 1/4 rod that comes in the bundle has NOTHING to do with replacing the head. The guy just up-sold me with that other piece to get more money out of me. You can order just the F38 quick-release head and be done with it.
Come on, no friction control on the ball head; WTF!!! That's the 1st thing they should have improved on the tripod instead of the non-universal quick release plate. Until then, not for me. Cheers!!!
Tbh kind of disappointed here. While the upgrade is nice to have, those who have bought Gen 1 of the tripod won't have access to this upgrade unless they fork out another $80 - $90 USD just to have this bit of functionality. They should've sent gen 1 owners the upgrade and proceeded with doing what they're doing imo... even if it's a slight loss, it'll produce customer retention imo.
Can totally understand being frustrated when companies are iterating so quickly these days. Seems like as soon as we get something a better version is already being announced! Nice thing is though, that the arca Swiss plate version is still awesome and you can always order the much cheaper universal plate for f38 to convert yours👍
@@DavidManningvlog I actually bought this tripod 2 weeks before they pushed out the f38 ball head... So I'm just a bit sad hahahaha. I'll have to look into switching to the f38 plate and selling my pd capture clip
Not a fan of the F38 since I use a Kirk L bracket and nodal rails. If anyone wants to sell their original version that's arca swiss compatible, hit me up!
@@DavidManningvlog great, was looking at pd but something just felt off.. Now im looking at buying this, and the backpack clip. All i need now is a better backpack than a regular school one.
Is this F38 ball head arcs Swiss compatible? I like the updated features of the gen 2 over the gen 1 and I’d like to use the gen 2 with an arca Swiss L-bracket rather than the quick release system. This tripod looks way better than the Peak Design. I have the PD carbon fiber and the ball head drives me crazy.
It is not! The ballhead only works with F38 plates, but the F38 plates are arca-swiss compatible with other ballheads. But man, I'm with you on the PD ballhead driving me crazy 👍
@@DavidManningvlog thanks! Bummer, I like the gen 2 updates but prefer the gen 1 center column/ball head. I’ve had to replace the PD ball head twice bc overtime it breaks and begins to slip. Not to mention it’s a nightmare to tighten while keeping the camera in the exact same position as you twist to tighten it in place.
@@DavidManningvlog totally commented before watching the full video, but nope. It's been 3+ weeks on the normal Ulanzi tripods - not even the newest model..
