Sorry for the different audio - had some mic problems during this recording and will make sure the next recaps don’t have this issue! Thanks for watching ❤️
Pia is such a great woman, not only has she earned her place in chess history she also raised someone as kind and positive as Anna and i can't think of a greater achievement than that.
You know PIa was worried. Anna is mischievous and Pia knows it. But, as mischievous as she is, there was no way she was going to do that to her mom at this prestigious tournament.
I have been watching your videos for a while now and the best ones focus on your two lovely parents. Your love for them eclipses your love for chess, and that is huge. Do a Father's Day video about your dad !
It's so great to watch Pia in the here and now, thiinking back to many years ago when I was playing some tournament chess (at a much lower level-), and reading about her in chess magazines. I am glad that she still has the concentration to play like this. I doubt if I could manage to sit at a chessboard for 4+ hours these days without going out of my mind. Good luck to her and to you, Anna!
Let's go Pia! I've been a huge fan for a long time. It is refreshing to see someone with the amount of experience you have to still be competing at an elite level. People take for granted the challenges women had historically in the day and age that you started your career. If breaking that glass ceiling was on your bucket list and still playing at the level you still are check that box off if you haven't already. Keep up the great work. Win or lose you're an inspiration to everyone who is a fan of chess.
@@glengoesthereResearch has show that even after excluding cases of dementia, with age there is more concrete knowledge but slower processing speed to access the knowledge and solve fluid problems with it. Doing an event like a chess match relies not only on your memory and experience, but your ability to tap into it quickly, calculate accurately, think flexibly and have lots of stamina. It’s definitely possible to do, just as Pia is proving. But let’s give her proper credit- she is achieving all of this at an age where the soul may be willing but the flesh and brain need to work a bit harder than they used to. This is an incredible testament to Pia’s innate talent, tremendous work ethic, emotional toughness, and passion! She is holding her own in sport that tends to favor those in their teens, twenties and thirties. Let’s give her props, she is an amazing role model for what it means to age productively, gracefully and joyfully ❤
I enjoy watching your mom play because I use this opening and hope to improve my game. She is such a good player. I also appreciate your enthusiasm for the game and you are a lovely lady also.❤❤
Anna would have to give up doing the chess content creation and online bullet chess playing to study to make it to WIM, let alone WGM in classical chess. She said she’s not sure she would want to do that in the future. Certainly for the present she doesn’t want to clear everything out of her life in order to rise in the classical rankings.
Pia did great against the top players, much younger and more energetic... It's amazing, and her composure and calmness, even after the match is just amazing. It's heartwarming, somewhere deep inside, I would also love to see Spanish Tal in action 😂😂 though I guess he is focusing on more important things in life. Wishing Pia all the best in the coming rounds ❤
❤❤you are a really great daughter, lots of respect for your mum. My sister hasnt even talked to my mum for over a decade so its great to see that connection.
@@ASDasdSDsadASD-nc7lf Did you watch the video? It's not about mental acuity. Anna was saying that her mother gets tired more easily and I simply agreed with that.
Your mother is a true champion, there is no doubt about that, but among all the greatest achievements she has had in her life, the greatest of them all was being able to be your mother. Congratulations Pia and Anna, your story is truly very inspiring. What a wonderful daughter you rase Pia. Hugs From Brazil and Cya Anna
Fun fact. Even if you make the move d3, your mum can then change the move to d4, because she did not touch the piece. Recently tested by Magnus Cartlsen, I think. As long as she does this before pushing the clock, of course.
That feeling that stopped you playing The Cow is called respect. I am happy that you have it, your mom has earned it. GM Pia's stamina will improve as she competes. Sixity-one is just deep middle age. Pia is sprightly.
I guess she wasn't seriously asking, but just want to hear people applauding her behaviour while entertaining the idea. Imagine the audicity of trolling your GM mum in an offical match, because your viewers would enjoy it. She can't be serious. If she was Id be worried. But I think she is just fishing for "you did good/the right thing" affirmation and an active comment section. ;)
I'd have made the cow because I'm a silly bean, but I trust you and your mother and your read of the room, and I'm just so happy that you got to share this moment
That smile on your mom's face when you played D4 (1:13) is proof she knew you were thinking hard about playing The Cow, but knew you'd do the right thing. And it made her particularly happy you did the right thing.
It would've been really funny if you had played The Cow! 😅but yeah maybe it would've not been such a funny thing to Pia in this context so yeah I do still think you made the right choice
Very well played 🙌🙌I wish your mom the best in the tournament. Also I just thought about this as a 50yr old I know about mental fatigue I barely get through a couple of games myself LOL But maybe have her eat Lions Mane mushroom (cooked of course) at break or lunch that would boost your mental energy I mean very noticeable or take Gingko Biloba unless that's considered doping in this sport 🤣🤣🤣
I finally got to play the cow opening, just a casual game against a friend, but it was so fun. After some scuffed moves I finally got myself in good position and started chasing the king around. I ended the match with the opposing king under attack by a pawn with nowhere to go. It was easily one of the most interesting games.
Armageddon is such a weird thing to do in Classical Chess. It's like if you draw in a marathon run, then now you have to compete in 100 meter dash contest.
I realized last week your mom and I are about the same age. I couldn’t imagine concentrating for four hours then turn around and play a second game. My brain would explode.
A lot it´s said about the longevity of Anand in the elite, but we must remember that Anand it´s 55, and Pia it´s 61. And here she is, playing again the world champion and a lot of players that have run the candidates. She it´s strugling in the Armagedon, at fast ryhms, but in classical she is holding her own
It’s not as important as you might think. Sure, it’s good to have common lines memorized, but positional, tactical and strategic awareness (I.e knowing what you’re doing and knowing what your opponent is trying to do) are the key to growth.
@@andrewlewis4863 This woman is a GM due to her extreme (compared to normal people) chess memory. "Not as important as I think", oh it is very very important. Of course memory is something to admire, I am just stating the facts. Let's say two players got the same tactical and strategic awareness. But one of them got extreme chess memory. The advantage this player then gets after using AI programs is super huge. And it only increases with more plays.
@diamondmeeple That's not a fair comparison because you can say such a thing about all facets of chess. "If they have the same memory level but one has more awareness than the other..." you see what I mean? I did not say memory wasn't important, but it is not the end all, be all for a good chess player. Magnus carlsen has a good memory, knowing up to 10,000 games of chess at a time. But he does not play chess racking his memory to identify when and where he's seen something- he plays on instinct. The instinct is honed with awareness- awareness of his own piece activity and how to enhance that piece activity without hindering his other piece activity, understanding that control and placement in the correct squares will mitigate the power of his opponent's pieces, and eventually maximizing his advantage by exploiting even a tiny tactic that leads to winning a pawn. He plays endgames like a computer, not due to memory, but because he knows by instinct how to navigate ANY endgame situation. You should see his last game against Pragg. Something like that is not produced in memory- it's produced in positional awareness.
@@andrewlewis4863 Instinct? How do you know. His chess memory is off the charts. And it helps him greatly. How much? Maybe he don't know himself, he just "knows" the best move in that and that situation. Incredibly chess memory is extremly important/helpful to become a GM. I read about an eastern european GM who plays the same opening with white every time. Knowing the opening inside and out he "never" loses with white, wins or draws.
@@diamondmeeple in Carlsens interviews he admits he doesn’t calculate heavily, and that he has a gut feeling about the right move. That’s instinct. Again, you’re not processing my entire statement. I did not say memory was unimportant, I said that it is not the most important factor in a GM. You’re trying to impose that I believe memory is not a great asset in chess and I did not say that. You placed ALL your emphasis on memory and fail to accept that it is not the sole trait of a GM. I don’t know what your rating is but if your entire focus is on memorization I can’t imagine it’s very high.
I've turned the cow into my first 15 moves in chess. And I haven't lost a game since I came up with those 15 moves. I have even had friends go home for the night and work with their chess engines. And if they play white and do those first 15 moves that I do. There is absolutely no possible win. An opponent can have against that.
Personally, it doesn’t matter to me if Pia wins or loses the game, because her attitude towards/after the games or even her way of just being self-aware, patient and positive always teach me something. To be like that and to have raised such (an other) nice human being (Anna) is a grandmaster win to me!
Anna you mentioned during this game that Pia was playing an opponent with a rating of about 100 pts higher. In chess terms what would your mum have to do to increase her score by 100 pts ?
You know your Mom better than I do. Some folks would enjoy the levity of the Cow opening to break the tension. Others would just view it as an unnecesary distraction while trying to concentrate. I would've loved to see you Mom's face when you unleashed the Cow, lol.
I don't think cow opening would have been appropriate at this degree of competition and maybe not the best unless your mom had a better record so far in which case she can afford to take more risks.
Has something changed and are players now obligated to use the ceremonial first move? If not, then a lot of people are taking themselves way too damn seriously here.
