The select few elite guys who are pulling these high 400+ kg sumo deadlifts have two things in common. The first is obviously extreme strength, but the second is amazing leverages. At the point where the weight leaves the ground, their thighs and back are both nearly vertical, creating a highly advantageous starting position resembling something similar to that of a rack pull. From this position, my theory is a huge weight can be pulled without requiring as much so-called "brute strength" displayed by strongmen. Look at Eddie's 500 kg and Thor's 501 kg. These lifts were done through brute strength, from man mountains weighing close to double these guys. Thor in fact doesn't have great leverages, standing at 6'9". No doubt their static power is greater than these elite sumo pullers, but the sumo pullers can take advantage of leverages to match their deadlifts. No hate, just my two cents.
@1neomonkey
@1neomonkey 2 года назад
You are 100% correct. Not to take anything away from this lift, but athletes deserve to have more uniformity in the rules in regards to the bar, stance, etc. If everyone had to pull using a stiff bar only, no straps, and conventional stance only, then records would stand for much longer and athletes who break records would get the recognition and celebration they deserve, and there would be no questions about it.
@ecosx2618
@ecosx2618 2 года назад
I feel like people want powerlifting to be the “standard” as far as demonstrating strength goes; because it’s more popular than strongman. However, there’s a reason that strongman competitors are capable of more than just competition lifts like squat deadlift and bench. They are able to demonstrate a LOT more strength than powerlifters
@Dnordsmark
@Dnordsmark 2 года назад
This isnt even controversial, most people agree that to pull a monster sumo you'll need to both be incredibly strong and have amazing leverages. Leverages is up to your genetics, and so is your maximum strength potential. People who want powerlifting to be about pure feats of strength should rethink the sport they're invested in. If that is what you're looking for, strongman is by far the superior sport, not to mention it is vastly more enjoyable to watch.

Getting kinda tired of these lifts tbh. There's only like 4 inch rom with full load on the bar. Partial deadlift in stronman even have alot more range of motion. Although this is still an insane feat of strength, i'd rather compare it with lifts such as aleksi novikovs partial deadlift of 1185 pounds, ronnies 2300lbs leg press or Nick best's 2791lb carrousel lift. The stiff bar should be the only bar that is allowed in competion. It's kinda ironic that powerlifting is one of the (if not the) sport with the highest potential of competitors in the world and yet is unable to grow. Most of the federations just have ridiculous (lack of) rules which make the sport irrelevant for the general public
@lewisruffalo2221
@lewisruffalo2221 2 года назад
4 inch ROM is being generous...it's less than 4 inches. Not only that, the weight off the floor is 2 seconds or less in the ROM phase. if sumo is done without straps, it cannot even compare with the grip strength needed to pull a conventional that lasts 5 seconds in ROM. Sumo is like equipped lifting or those ridiculous arched bench presses...a joke and an embarrassment. Anyone who claims a "world record" with these should be ashamed.
