After 30 years of floating gears I just bought a 2022 5700xe. It had to have a DT12 and I could not be happier with it. The thing is brilliant. A way smarter and smoother shifter as well as more efficient than any human could ever be.
@curseofthegreat
@curseofthegreat 3 года назад
I just drove a 2020 Freightliner Cascadia to do a delivery. The Star went into the shop for a few days - A/C compressor clutch failed at 36k miles. The Cascadia has about 210k miles and is equipped with DD15 and DT12 and ohhhhh man. While yes, it is more efficient, I had no idea what in the world the transmission was trying to do. It was sloppy, it was a lazy dog going up any kind of hill, the gear changes were so slow, the mirrors are TERRIBLE, ride quality is garbage and I honestly did not feel like I had as much control over just what the truck was doing. Plus it had the stupid Bendix system and it would not shut off. It did one of those random sudden collision avoidance automatic brakes for me…but I was going under an overpass and there were no cars in front of me. I honestly hated it more than my old Peterbilt.
@Freightlinerbob
@Freightlinerbob 3 года назад
@@curseofthegreat sounds like your impression of the rest of the truck influenced your thoughts on the DT 12 as well. Plus it could be that the fleet parameters were restricted. If you don’t like what it’s doing in economy mode, kick it down and it’ll grab as much as two gears. If you don’t like that, select performance mode and use the kick down function. The transmission can only perform at a level that the engine is capable of. Sounds like your boss neutered your truck.
@curseofthegreat
@curseofthegreat 3 года назад
@@Freightlinerbob I’m not sure if that’s the case. It could very well be. Regardless, I got the Star back from the shop literally just now and it’s doing spectacularly well. I got the paperwork for the warranty work they did and it reads “Verified the complaint, the A/C was not blowing cold. Inspected the A/C compressor, found the clutch had melted and falling off of the compressor“. Yikes. Hopefully this new one is more robust. They also did some recall work on it. It will all be in the next video!

Remind me my truck from 1992, just small display between analog on dash. I can't believe it in 2020 split windscreen, not have a full roller screen in front of windscreen, where are USB ports, satnav.

I like that you can move the switches and guages wherever you want. One negative is, and you'll learn this, the defroster doesn't do shit. Treat your glass with shaving cream, old school white shit. It works better than real anti fog products

@@brettdonohue5579 I'm 54 and I've always wanted to be a long haul truck driver but I was born legally blind and my vision wouldn't permit me to do it. However I know a lot about rigs from the rookie sticks to the mud flap hangers I can carry on a conversation with people as if I've been driving all my life. @@brettdonohue5579 that’s one of the reasons I love being out on the road. But I feel obligated to tell you that things are not always all sunshine and rainbows out there. I’ve had loads cancelled while sitting on a door, and I’ve waited up to 9.5 hours just to get unloaded. I’ve actually discovered by listening on the CB that truckers are some of the most racist, biased scumbags out there, most specifically with regards to those who have moved to the US in an attempt to better their life. And common courtesy among truckers is like finding a diamond in the rough, it isn’t too common. Things like this, I try not to include in my video because I feel like I cover enough stuff that could be perceived as negative, and I try to have as much of a positive outlook as I can. But I’m going to be covering some of this stuff in an upcoming video, and I’m also finishing up filming a 3 month follow up review on the new truck sometime within the next week, so stay tuned, and thank you for watching!

Great tour of the new Western Star. Let us know how you like the 13 speed and the DD16. What is the problem with the automated Eaton transmissions?
@curseofthegreat
@curseofthegreat 3 года назад
DD15, and the engines in the autos are downsped on TQ/HP. Autos are 470 vs 505 and 1800 vs 1850. They are slow to upshift and downshift, they jerk around when you’re backing and you need to have at least 100PSI in both tanks to shift into D or R. Even though they have a “manual mode” if you exceed a certain RPM, like descending a hill, it will shift to the next gear on its own. In winter, when you are attempting to start on a slippery road surface, it will just start flying through the gears and spinning like you’re at a drag strip. With a manual, I have ultimate control of what goes on and when, and I value that more than better fuel economy seven ways to Sunday.

The biggest problem with these downspeed speced automated trucks is that they are no where the efficiency producer that the manufacturers pretend them to be. I hate the 9 and 10 speed manual transmissions companies insist on putting in their trucks, and I despise all automated transmissions equally.
@curseofthegreat
@curseofthegreat 2 года назад
I wholeheartedly agree. The Peterbilt I was in was so gutless. I drove one of the new Cascadias and you can absolutely tell there is a massive power difference between shifting your own gears and letting a lazy computer do it for you. That said, I also drove a Mack Anthem recently and was actually impressed with the acceleration and shifting…but the inside panel layout and controls were abhorrent. Video on that coming soon!

@@curseofthegreat as of 2020 DD15 engines no longer have an 18:1 static compression ratio, the new engines 21:1 which is the main reason why the top power spec has been raised from 505/1750 hp/tq to 505/1850.
