It Is What It Is. Our Equipment Breaks Too! Lifting a Lift

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching. OK, so this is a little different. Our Peterbilt 579 road tractor, unit #17, that pulls our Trail-Eze TE801 trailer, had loaded a piece of equipment and was delivering it for a customer when the hydraulic pump on the truck sprung a leak. Meaning that the driver, Kenny, couldn't unload the equipment at the delivery location. I sent Mike to contain the small spill. Kenny had shut off the valve from the hydraulic oil tank as soon as he noticed the leak. Mike and Kenny believed that the pump's shaft seal had gone bad and was not repairable on-site, so, I take our Peterbilt 389X with a Miller Industries Century 1150R rotator to unload the SkyJack SJ66 boom lift for our customer. Before anyone asks, NO, we did not charge our customer for using the Rotator to unload the equipment. This was our equipment failure and was on use. It is what it is. Mechanical equipment fails, breaks, malfunctions...even ours. It happens. The main things are that nobody was injured, our customer was taken care of, and the small hydraulic oil spill was cleaned up. We later discovered that Kenny and Mike were correct and it was a pump seal failure. So, now our trailer is inoperable waiting on a $2.00 shaft seal that has to be ordered!!! Oh well, again, it is what it is.
I hope you all enjoy this video!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!
This is a revision of a revision of the new intro. I've extended the duration of the channel's "theme" music and reduced the volume of the siren. Hopefully this revision will be well-received. Thanks again and God bless.

This doesn't have anything to do with this video.. but I laid a big truck over on the main street of Scott City back in I think 1999 it was loaded with 40 thousand pounds of rolls of paper and his dad and probably Ron came and sit it back up no damage.. that was way before any rotater.. but It was very impressive watching them work...Ron had one hell of a teacher his dad was very good..RIP to his dad

Breakdowns are a fact of life, not matter what the equipment is. A few weeks ago, my SUV was in the shop for brakes, so I drove my old reliable F150. I got 45 miles away from home, got off the interstate and tried to downshift from 5th gear to 4th gear (manual tranny) and the shifter wouldn't move, ended up being a broken shift fork and worn out synchronizers. Rebuilt now and back on the road.

I like how you reassured your employee it wasn't their fault. I have worked at places where everything was my fault and it wasn't much fun. Somehow I made it rain, made UPS loose a package or caused a part to be on backorder.

I don’t even watch reg tv shows anymore, I’m totally hooked on watching your videos now! The first one I watched was your first job after your dad passed and seeing what a kind christian man you are hooked me. I’ve enjoyed every video, especially the one of you & dad recovering the van out of the nat’l forest (last one with him) and I just cried! Also enjoyed one of wedding vows renewed, which I also cried, your videos are wholesome and very uplifting. God bless you, your beautiful family, your workers and your business! I lost my husband in January last year, one day after his 77th bday and 4 months shy of 45 yrs married. I truly love you all!

I was in a situation where the tow company had to have a tire repair midway through a tow, so yes your equipment is subject to the same issues as the drivers you go to help. And it doesn't matter how well maintained a vehicle is, there's always something that goes out. Kudos to you and your awesome crew. Stay safe. 🙏

Have ypu thought about numbering the cabinets on the rotator? Then when youre working with other people on your crew and need to direct someone to get something all you have to tell them is a number, rather than describing the location. Also, i love the arrow on the inside of that front cabinet door, really smart idea, and helps keep peolpe safe.
@2H80vids
@2H80vids 2 года назад
I noticed that arrow the first time I watched the rotator and thought it was a great idea. $750,000 worth of machine and it's a couple of leds that impressed me.😂 With the storage cabinets; first thing I thought of was to organise things so that the same gear is in the same locker on every truck. The flaw there though is that the trucks are all designed differently(different cabinets, different equipment) so your idea might be a good compromise. I often wonder if some extra storage could be added, especially to the rotator. There's so much gear on that truck, the compartments often look overcrowded. Some great ideas have been used to store equipment but I'm guessing that Ron would love to have another couple of cupboards. Of course, however much space you have, you'll always manage to fill it.👍😁

I used to work for a Natural Gas and Propane company. I was setting 1000 gal propane tank with 1000 lbs concrete slabs under the legs on each end. What using a 1975 GMC 4x4 on. 6500 chassis. Had the tank just over the hole when the main hose from the pump broke. The tank was swinging in the air for almost 4 hours while the mechanic got a hose made for it. The crane part was a Pitman Hydro Lift. The next truck crane they got was a Ford F 750 with a National 500 crane. Had both front and rear outrigger. The GMC only had front outriggers. We used to support the rear with 4x4’s to stabilize the truck. Just thinking that was almost 40 years ago. In Miami Florida. I used to like setting tanks.

When a seal goes it goes... no warning , try a 1963 Rolls Cloud 3 brake seals going on a steep gradient with a traffic light at the bottom of the hill and it changes for the wrong before you get to the bottom of the hill and can wash off speed ! I know exactly how irritating when hydraulic seals fail ! As you said , it happens , that was not the most cooperative designed piece of machinery for a upright lift , well done .

As always, great work! I love how you're patient with all your crew and work hard to teach any who don't already know how to do certain tasks on the job. Also I enjoy watching the high speed at the end because it really shows you how much stress the weight of that machine puts on the Landoll trailer and then when it shifts from that to the Tator how much force the driver's side of the rotator was taking on from the weight. I know it's designed for that and is supposed to do that, but it's always so gradual in real time you don't quite notice just how much the suspension and other components flex!

Unknown failures can happen anytime through no fault of your own. Hydraulic hoses are very susceptible as they are pressurized many times and are also flexing which causes unseen damage within the hose. It could be beneficial to form a schedule to replace such items on a scheduled basis, similar to oil changes, but not as often. Your vehicles look very well maintained congrats on that, You take pride in what you do, my suggestion is only that, a suggestion. Keep up the good work.

They gotta act like they are building a space shuttle, otherwise people wouldnt pay their huge bills. Ive done recover for a body shop, and ive helped on heavy jobs like this, and work in an industry where crane use is prevalent. Theres cheat sheets for 95% of lift work, its on the lift, and most crane operators/heavy recovery guys i know could sleep while they perform their work. Im a control tech/automation tech for the last 12 years, and its no different, your a man with smarts, you could do it too, its not rocket science just like your job isnt. My company bills high too, but i dont act like nobody else can do it... Our jobs arent hard to fill because it takes an insane amount if knowledge, they dont, just alot of common sense, they are hard to fill because of the persona the jobs are given. Or hard companies to start because of the investment. Begging for your followers to eat me up because i downplayed your work? Im downplaying it because, again, its hard to get these kinds of jobs filled because arrogant people in them act like god and deter people away who otherwise could do the work with common sense and self application. The work isnt that hard sir, ive done hard work, neither your job, or mine, falls in that category. You should encourage your followers to take a similar career path, instead of pumpin up your chest like your irreplaceable. I can tell ive hit a nerve.... dont let your pride get ahead of you sir. Theres plenty of people out there that can do your jpb and mine the same. A man of your age and knowledge outta have that idea pinned down.

@@whiskerbiscuit99 I started to write a humble and detailed response yet decided against it. Regardless of what I say, you seem to be the type of person who only wishes to incite drama for your entertainment. I could explain, but I feel it would only encourage you and your apparent need to belittle others to make yourself feel better. I've dealt with many like you in my 30+ years in this business. I will not entertain you any further. I wish you the best in whatever it is you do and I will pray for you. God bless.

Good morning Ron and Crew!!!! You can work on the equipments big stuff and a little seal will bite you. Everything breaks down from time to time. Alls well that ends well. By the way I loved the Mikey slide, lol. May God bless and keep y’all safe.

So many pieces of equipment are designed by engineers but they don't think about how someone may have to pick them up. Lifting eyes that are made into the casting does make it much easier. Were I worked there were some pieces of equipment to figure out how to pick up until a fixture could be designed to help. I was one of many crane operators who went through the same situations.

To be fair, those eyes in the base weren't put there with lifting in mind, since the need to pick these boom lifts up is super rare and probably not recommended by the manufacturer, they're really just meant for tie-down on transport.

Great video Ron glad this was a small job this mechanical break down happened on and not one of your bigger wreaks needing that truck and trailer stay safe.

Unfortunate when own equipment fails. But good thing you" know a guy with a wrecker" and was able to recover your load and deliver it to the customer. Thankfully the truck is still drivable, just needs a short break and it will be back in service. Job well done as always!

Missed an opportunity to do this the cool way. Coulda have dropped trailer legs.. unhooked tractor.. lifted the *trailer* to the height where the deck was on the ground.. and then support with blocks, drive off zoom boom.. Safer, no.. regrettably. More epic video showing the tator skills.. definately.

Its funny that you puts this vid up. I just saw a heavy wrecker with its hood up but had a rig hooked up on the shoulder. Its all bound to break sooner or later and we cant plan the break downs Nice to see your break downs too. Have a good weekend.

I am sure it’s frustrating when equipment breaks, but at least you have the equipment that can solve the problem. Nice to get out of the office and not be on the highway. Good practice for when you are on the highway. It pays to have swampers to help with rigging. Glad it didn’t break while the wheels were not pulled forward and the tilt engaged.

Great work as always! When my truck was new the PTO pump leaked twice and both times they changed the seal and on the third one they replaced the whole pump. Things will definitely break and all you can do is fix it and move on.

Isn't it always the brand new machines that always break down the first time they're heavily run. Half of the new tractors, seven or so, I have bought has always atleast sprung a leak somewhere.
