It's a charging monster! England to Italy in an IONIQ 5, part 1 🇮🇹

My wife and daughter flew to Italy without me. I followed with the dog in the IONIQ 5. I’ve driven to Italy before in an EV (a Kia e-Niro) so surely it’ll be easier in the IONIQ 5 with its amazing charging speed? Surely!
I start the video by showing how I planned the journey using ABRP (ABetterRoutePlanner.com) and then show just how much fun it is using toll booths, getting a pet into Europe - thanks, Brexit! - and what you might expect from the European charging network. (Mainly IONITY).
Part 2 will feature my wife and daughter. Get ready for that! 😬

Ok just got to the end… magnificent video. Loads of pee, charging, tolls, baby, traffic jams, rerouting of maps and working out what was happening with charging… I honestly couldn’t look away. And the best part was to arrive, with no glass of wine waiting, only to be completely ignored by both if your girls for the excitement of seeing your dog… perfectly sums up long haul car trips, marriage and parenthood in one jam packed video. I honestly can’t wait for the return trip with everyone in tow… the little preview at the end has me on the edge of my seat with excitement. I will be watching with a glass of wine. You have no idea how many people claim they have mega bladder, but in fact, they don't:) I'm not saying this to offend you nor I'm denying your ability to drive 6 hours straight. What I meant is that many people complain about the range, and in reality its not the range they are afraid of. It's the idea of powerbank driving you around. And problem with all governments is, the longer people resist electric cars, the more they pay (in taxes) to people that have them. Tax credits, incentives, vat reduction etc. And I do have ev and ice. Driving ev only for past year by choice😊

Impressive speed of charge, but charging up at 45% is almost criminal. You need your navigation to skip a charger and go to the next so you can arrive at 10% (±5%) . It really makes me value the Tesla navigation nearly as much as the superchargers. All in all I think I would love your car, but there is no way my wife would put up with it, and as we are a single car family I think we will have to stick with an our old model X for a while longer yet.

Really good video and beautiful car. I love those things. Only downside I can see is relatively short range on battery between stops. 9 stops and an average of 128 miles over the 1157 miles seems a lot. Upside is that it does charge quickly. Seems the car breaks the Ionity chargers that I think maybe over heat trying to deliver a high rate of charge for too long. Explains maybe why so many of those things are broken so often. Look forward to trip home and next video. Good editing too and commentary.
@heijxje
@heijxje Год назад
The stops could have been farther between them, since he mostly seemed to arrive with 35 to 50% capacity left, which in absolute terms is almost the full capacity of a 1st gen ioniq (28kWh). If the preference for ionity were let go in ABRP, it might have been able to lose maybe 2, but at least one charging stop. Also I wonder if reducing your speed to 120 or 110 kmh would improve the efficiency as much as to lose another charging stop, thereby actually gaining time.

Thanks for sharing your educational journey to Italy!🤩🤓 p.s. adore your sweet Baby! 🥰

i have the Kia E Niro 2020 model and exchanged it for a combustion engine Mercedes C class estate 2022 model for a summer holiday from nothern Europe to Italy. It reminded me how much extra thinking goes in to planning chargers and waiting at every stop. I really enjoyed the freedom of a combustion engine and the trust that there is always a place to fuel up nearby

Hi, love your videos! As a new EV owner I have learned a lot from your experiences. I have a Cupra Born and have just got back from a family trip to Berlin and Brugge. We had no issues charging, i used ABRP as a guide and managed to charge every time with either Bonnet or ChargeMap. I felt confident attempting this thanks to your videos, keep up the good work 😊

Many thanks for for this wonderful road-trip video. I always enjoy watching you, but this one is just the one I needed to scratch my roadtrip itch a little, which has been steadily increasing since I got back from my first EV long-distance trip (Munich North Cape in Fiat 500e).

Very watchable given this was a long video! Key takeaways. That was very cheap in “fuel”. It was very quick to charge and gave you the break you would have anyway. A fantastic car and so much want. Charging network is better than I thought BUT still a little temperamental. Finally looking forward to seeing the next adventure! Cheers

So I never thought I’d be watching this kind of video. But I’m currently in the process of buying a 500e and I’ve watched a couple of videos from you and Mrs EV about it, and this video shows as recommended. Clicked on it, and by the time you’re arriving in France, I’m opening a bag of popcorn.

Lovely video, awesome car! I just drove down to the Dolomites for a holiday in Italy too. My 2020 Tesla M3, with a bike rack averaged 303 Wh/mile driven at the speed limit or 130kph on the unrestricted autobahn, which I thought was pretty good. The charge stops came every two hours, and I was glad of each one. The only thing that didn't go to plan were my Airbnbs, both of them, for different reasons failed to charge my car. Next morning I had plenty of charge to get to the nearest supercharger, but it was a V2 150 kW and it was too early for the shop next door to be open. So I picked up just enough charge to get to a Fastned charger, which was awesome, charged my car ar 215 kW. Also, I think the tunnel has cellular data through it, I was able to stream Netflix the whole way through. Interestingly ABRP planned my route running my battery down to 10% before charging. I suspect you didn't see the full speed on your charging because your soc wasn't low enough at 40-45%? It was still awesomely fast with a nice flat curve in the Ionic 5. It's a really lush car.

well done! I just did a 1200 mile each way road trip to Colorado from California in my Volt with my dog, so I'm sympathizing on the long hours in the car. Wishing it had been in a full EV like yours.
@jbakerjonathan1
@jbakerjonathan1 Год назад
Perhaps this may be semantic (or pedantic, or just plain nitpicking 8^), but, since the Volt electric motor is directly coupled to the transmission, the Volt cannot move if the electric motor is not energized. Therefore, the Volt IS an EV that sometimes uses its own on-board generator that is driven by a gasoline engine. When the battery is depleted of electrons provided by an outside source, it relies on the generator for additional electrons. I can fully accept the desire to differentiate the Volt from cars with only a battery as the source of propulsion energy (sometimes referred to as BEVs), however, it is a "full" EV. I’ve driven in my Volt across the Rocky Mountains many times without any trouble, even driving up to the top of Pikes Peak. I had an adverse reaction to the change air pressure. My Volt took it in stride. If I can get the HI5 in the configuration that I want, I may do that again. I thoroughly enjoyed the video, Andrew, and I am looking forward to viewing your return trip. I believe that the dip in charging at around the 80% mark in the HI5 is due to the BMS balancing the cells to prevent overcharging some of them and causing premature degradation (damage) of those cells…which is a good thing. :)
@Matt-dx3wo
@Matt-dx3wo Год назад
@@jbakerjonathan1 Thanks, yep I know it operates like that. Let's just say I burned many gallons of gasoline on the trip and obtained the vast majority of my energy from gasoline stations :-)

Italian here, I don't have a telepass because it's paid for. I hate paying for motorways because they're ridiculously expensive, so I avoid them like the plague. If the choice is taking 1 hour via motorway and pay 17€ for 100km (A4 Torino-Milano) or 90 minutes with a free state road, I'll choose the latter every single time. The telepass thingy costs 30€ a year and it's not worth it when 99% of the time going through the Viacard lane only takes me an extra 5 seconds and I only do it like once or twice a month.

The Ioniq 5 is my dream EV for the time being, and the upcoming N version should be a performance beast for sure. I'm enjoying my '22 plate Hyundai Kona Ultimate for now, and love the ability to have it stay nice & cool, either while in it, or keeping shopping cool while in another shop etc :) You're lucky to get the Ioniq 5 with the solar roof, IIRC, there were only 1000 allotted for Europe
