Come along on a late season overnight guided trip with Dane Kresten Ovesen. A few 'hitches' along the way mean a rough start for the big fella but some quality fishing more than makes up for a heavy cold, wasp stings, broken sunglasses and busted rod.
Mike Kirkpatrick is available for guided fly fishing based in the Nelson district www.latitudeguiding.co.nz

I'm astonished literally every time I watch a new zealand trout video...you guys have some soul rending scenery down there....the water is that "untapped by man" clear blue color, the trout are enormous and healthy...it's unreal

I lived in Alaska for 30 years, some of the best fly fishing in the world. NZ is different in all the right ways, in my opinion if that were one of my Alaska trips I would be very very happy with those fish, a lot more dinks would have been caught here.

I have seen all your videos but I'm currently going through them again so I can comment on the very best of them. They are all great but you have some real standouts that separate the rest.. This being one of them. Great story in this & poor Kresten Ovesen with "wasp stings" & a busted rod etc. He run into a wasp nest..? I had a close call a wee while back, wasps and rotten sections of trees can be an issue in certain fishing locations as I found. Great feed you put on too as you guys genuinely eat well on these trips, not like a lot of us with the usual bread rolls & them freeze dry back country cuisine meals lol. another epic video Mike

No two fish the same in an incredible system of water, the clarity of water showing in the condition of the fish- Hope this great river is still alive and well and isnt getting too much human traffic since posting this footage_ I''m about to embark on the fly as currently im doing 'the other'- sooner the better and wish to learn from one of the best, a master craftsman such as yourself.

@mikefsher Год назад
Cheers for the kind words. It’s a beautiful spot for sure and rest assured that it’s not going to get more traffic than it can handle as the few that know where this spot is, only know from having been there before, so as long as you keep river names out of videos, they remain largely unaffected

Mike a big black woolly bugger can often initiate an 'attack' from pre-spawning fish, worth a go when they don't want to know the nymphs. It can be heart stopping watching the chase even if they don't take. Heading to the Nelson lakes tomorrow with my 8 year old daughter. She is just learning to fy fish, and keen as mustard, loves camping and your videos! These certainly help to inspire.....nice one mate!

Thanks David. Woolly Buggers still work but are a little 'old school' now - my go to are the new style articulated streamers (Sex Dungeons, Zoo Cougars etc) that Guys like Pete Carty have refined to an art... So much more movement and life. Happy to hear the clips are well received. Good luck tomorrow.

Great - Californians now know about this fishery and will, in no time, F it up!!!
@mikefsher
@mikefsher 7 лет назад
How on earth would they know where 'this fishery' is? I'm pretty sure most Californians (not sure why these fine US folk have been singled out) would struggle to ever know where it is and more to the point, be able to get there without getting lost or hurting themselves. If they can manage that - then good on them cause it's back breakingly hard just getting there. There are much much more pressing issues facing fishing here in NZ than this place...
@markk364
@markk364 7 лет назад
Do American's visit NZ and hire you to guide them? If so, where do they originate?
@mikefsher
@mikefsher 7 лет назад
I guide a good number of Americans every season along with anglers from Europe, Australia, Canada, South Africa and Scandinavia. My clients from the US come from all over - Montana, Wyoming, Upstate New York, Texas, California, Colorado etc...
@markk364
@markk364 7 лет назад
Let me try to explain my comment Mike: The fly-fisheries of CA have been decimated by 1. over-fishing and abuse, 2. mismanagement by state regulators and 3. an attitude of greed and a culture of selfishness that is pervasive in CA, and 4. the never-ending pursuit for more H2O. . The American River system, where I reside, is a perfect example; once held trophy rainbow and brown trout..as did the Yuba - and other, now depleted and abused, areas. The only remaining fine fly-fisheries exists where the fish-killing, dough-bait, beer-can dracks can't reach them, i.e. a natural filter - an example is the McCloud, which is, thankfully, does not run next to a major freeway system. Many CAs have given up on CA fly-fisheries -- and they now ruthlessly pound waters in other states,,,and other countries. I know this b/c as an Oregonian, we constantly had to "lecture" the abusive fishing practices of arrogant CAs on places like the Deschutes (fishing from boats, violating catch-and-release and size limit regulations, using live bait etc etc etc). I am happy that you have a great fishery ---- but once you take clients to your secret spot, how is it now secret????
@mikefsher
@mikefsher 7 лет назад
I hear your pain. What you speak of is endemic of an increasingly busy and popular fly fishing world in a dwindling resource internationally. As a sport it is a simple reality that we need good numbers in both local recreational anglers and business interest (in this case guiding) here in NZ, to have a large active base with which to have a strong voice in terms of opposition to increasingly intensive land use, bad farming practice, forestry, and excessive irrigation etc. There is a fine line between not having enough sway, and too many anglers, and we are in the process of legislating protection for our 'blue ribbon' fisheries with emphasis on protecting our local anglers. With regards to your assertion that i may be 'outing' my secrets spots, i can assure you that these places are earned by clients by only being shown to my regulars after a few trips and having earned my trust. These anglers form the majority of my client base and have all become very good friends to a man (or woman) and in 18 years as a guide i've never had one disappoint me by betraying that trust. They are all as invested in the protection of the fishery as i am and know deeply the value of this precious resource. I've been able to hand pick my clients in the latter part of my career with emphasis on friendship, trust and integrity. Thanks for the opportunity to clear the air on that one and i love the passion! Tight lines mate.

Kresten is a legend. Broken rod and he still lands the fish. Unreal. It kind of looked like when he netted the heaviest fish that the rod tip was down (bent over at a strange angle). Do you think that put stress on the rod and then it broke on the strike? How did he break it on the strike?

Hey Dave, not sure on how or why the rod broke. It was fairly new so maybe a weakness in the blank - happens...

mikefsher Another very enjoyable video, your buddy Kristen is a cool customer after his misfortune with the sunglasses AND the rod (Wasps are a fact of life!) I hope the rod was insured or a Hardy/Orvis so it didn't cost him too much to replace, people baulk at the price of high end gear but with Orvis's 25 year no quibble replacement guarantee and Hardy's lifetime (to first registered user) guarantee, it may be costly to gear up initially but we all tread on/shut in the car door/poke into the ground a rod occasionally and their guarantees certainly soften the blow! I suggest looking into the dear-gear stuff for these reasons (obviously you don't need to mention cost to the wives!) Keep up the good work you guys, always a pleasure to view your videos.

What type flies were you predominantly using? Great video btw! I will be moving to the Hamilton area soon. Looking forward to some good fly fishing indeed!

mikefsher Can you tell how much these trout weigh on average? I'm trying to decide on a line weight... and all the suggestions vary.

undefinablereasoning On this clip just under 7lb, but go with either a 5 or 6wt - in a perfect world, one of each.

Do they have many natural predators? They certainly don't mind floating around out in the open. In Canada, the clearer the water, the more wary the fish are...Waters like that, I'd have to climb up to on my beerbelly, and cast from 20 feet away from the water. Me old man never even liked to walk out of the treeline, being exposed, to cast for Brook Trout..

+FeldwebelWolfenstool No natural predators here apart from us and as they are naturally shallow water feeders, do what is in their genes. Also we certainly do very much have to be incredibly accurate and careful with our stalking - makes it look a tad easier when you know what you can get away with. The closer the better here with regards to casting possie to avoid drag which will put them down in an instant. Local knowledge counts for a lot
