@@Oh_noitsTheDovahkiin There were Spartans "better" than Chief, yeah, but none were as relentless and lucky. That was Chief's thing- he wasn't really the best at any one thing like other Spartans were, but he was damn near the 2nd best at just about everything, being overall the most widely skilled. THAT is what really made him the "best of his clan", as Arbiter put it.
that was not needed sorry, but I have played the game and in the game they call him the Demon. other frases " I have slayed THE DEMON" Halo Infinite and Halo wars when they kill my spartans they say "Demons have ben slayed" master chief not in the squad
Funny thing is, When a spartan is killed by the covies, they thought it was the Master Chief. They didn't know there were more spartans, because back then everyone was using the Mark 4 (or 5 i think) Mjolnir armor. So they thought it was the same person that they kept killing, and the fact that the same armor popped up everywhere they invaded. Hence, the word Demon fits, because Spartans never die.
They did all look the same in mk 4. Mk 5 platform kick started all the variations. Unfortunately, several writers are trying to push the idea that they always looked different
Also I’m pretty sure they knew there was more than just one spartan because the Spartans have worked in fireteams since the beginning so it would be known that there are multiple
To also add for "Demon" implications is that ODSTs were labeled as "Imps." I forgot the reason, but it's prob due to the fact they're the one unit that resemble Spartans, in a lesser form
Probably not THE Arbiter from 2/3, but one of the past Arbiters. Arbiter was a title kinda like the way Master Chief is a military rank, though we associate it with one character, doesn’t mean it isn’t applied in these ways.
@@Elitesolider1023 I'm not saying they're not important ofc ODSTs are TUFF AF, I'd be one lol but when the Spartan's were introduced they became Imps as an Imp is known to be a lesser form of a Demon, Demon's are the REAL DEAL a higher level entity hence the Elites calling Spartans as such.
Labeled demons because it appeared to the Covenant that it was the same human supersoldier fighting them every time, everywhere. Because they all looked the same, even more or less stripped of armor. It would seem to the Covies that a Spartan, while tougher than most of them, could be killed but it would just keep coming back to fight them (haunt them) like a real demon would.
I've read that book and it wasn't just because of how they fight It's because the Covenant couldn't see their faces. Thel said the reflective surface gave away no emotion. No hint towards him inflicting any pain or noticable damage. Like a Demon.
i've heard in Covenant religion it's considered improper to cover your face, and it's associated with evil all the way from old sanghelli culture, the spartans were literally perfectly made to be everything the covenant hated and feared
To add on to this, the original Mjolnir platform for the Spartan IIs were all identical. Covenant would kill a Spartan and another would take its place, during their initial deployment it was a common thought that the Spartans were being resurrected, combined with their staggering fighting abilities they were dubbed demons. Kind of the same thing is true for the ODSTs, though they’re referred to as “Imps” because they’re not as powerful.
I could’ve sworn it was also because when the glass a planet with a Spartan on it, they would just show up again on another planet they attack and because they all wore the same armor, it was seen as a demon coming back from certain death even though a glassed Spartan was dead. Maybe I’m wrong but I’ve thought this for some time now
They did all look the same back when they had mark 4 armor. But also the Spartans have worked in fireteams together since the beginning of the war so I’d assume the covenant knew there were multiple
@@jacobwhelan45 agreed there. After all, wouldn’t you be terrified after seeing an armored unit mowing through everyone like nothing, silent and emotionless, with speeds nearly incomprehensible? I sure as hell would, lol. Definitely seems more demonic than just another enemy soldier. And they see all their warriors as religious crusaders fighting for their gods, so seeing the Spartans murder all their crusaders would most definitely instill an unholy vibe
Another reason given for the Demon nicknames is because they Spartans are much less human than the rest of the UNSC forces. Its noted somewhere that the reflective visor made Spartans look like "Demons" because they had no facial features. This applied to the ODST too, being called "Imps" as they are like Minore Demons.
Not exactly, the Covenant thought they were real demons, sent to stop the great journey, at least that's what the prophets told the other species of the Covenant.
Glad someone said it, isn’t that the whole point the elites in general believe they are fighting a justified holy war and finding the truth is the main reason why the arbiter joins with chief in H3, buddy had to kill a lot of “heretics” to figure it out
It’s actually even better than this guy describes it, at this point in the war thel had fought and killed hundreds of human marines and soldiers. He didn’t fear anything, until he laid eyes on Jai. He described a human that was faster, smarter, and stronger than he had ever seen. A monster that was more machine than man. When he looked into the eyes of this human all he saw was his reflection . A faceless demon. This is how Spartans became known as “Demons”
Thel yelled demon because of the gold mirrored face plate of the helmet. He thought it was so unrighteous to hide his face in battle, and because jai was unlike any human thel had ever seen before nearly taking him out all while being completely dead silent while doing it. All of this made thel scream demon
@camoking3609 True but the Elite Ultra and Spec Ops were a higher rank. And being a high rank in Sangheili culture meant high social status. So it doesn't really make sense to me that they would look down on hiding one's face in combat.
@andrewwilliam7890 i think its just one of those things where the lore and gameplay have a disagreement, some author thought it would be cool to make hiddem faces a sign of evil to make the Covenant's "demon" metaphor stronger, and some srt designer just thought it'd be cool for ultra rank elites to have a sharp mask
One of my favorite lines from the books, I believe it was fall of Reach. "When shot with plasma or stabbed with a sword, inside the helmet the Spartan grunts and shouts with pain. Outside the helmet however all the covenant sees is an emotionless, unfeeling monster that didn't react at all to the grievous would they just delivered."
That’s what I thought too but all Spartans are given the demon name. If you look back and watch the fight clip of Atriox vs ( I forgot that spartan team name ) in halo wars 2 Atriox called them run little demons.
In ghosts of onyx (I think) there's a moment when a member of the covenant that intercepts a transmission or something and notes they're called spartans, which he interprets as the human word for demons.
After Noble 6s last stand on Reach killing swarms of elites without a helmet or energy shields. No doubt they were also labelled a demon. Maybe THE Second demon
They call them demons as an insult, since they represent an obstacle and a threat to their religion, however it is also a recognition of their abilities and exploits, recognizing that in many cases, the Spartans do not appear to be humans, but rather a class of supernatural warriors
The Demon is such a badass nickname for Master Chief, shows that even tho all Spartans are killing machines John is the killing machine like comparing an assault APC to an Abrams tank.
Context, the covenant before learning that spartans were just aug humans they thought spartans were monster brought back everytime they died to take the field again. Of course the covenant being a religious colition that opped to refer spartans as demons.
this may not be the official reason but i like to think they referred to humanity as demons because of the forerunners themselves. they learned of the great journey from them so maybe they also learned about the human-forerunner war before their first contact. and since forerunners were their gods and humanity were once their enemy, whats do you call the enemy of gods?
Jai was actually really close to killing Thel, back when Thel had not gained as much combat experience prior to CE. But Jai had standing orders to retrieve a ranking marine that had been injured. One has to wonder what would have happened had Jai managed to kill Thel, many deaths and planets glassed were under the command of Thel.
They also used to all have mark iv armor, so they looked almost the same, and when occasionally the covenant managed to kill one, they saw a new one or maybe an entire squad pull up on them making it seemingly unkillable, like if they came back from the dead and with more of them at that
If I remember the original lore right. It's because spartans all looked the same (armor wise and paint) and when they would encounter a spartan there would be another encounter of the same description someplace else and would seemingly reaper even if killed. They would also not hear a spartan speak either. It was just a silent thing going through their lines. Same with the ODST but to a lesser extent and thats why they got called imps.
going back to halo 4 and watching the cutscene with the librarian talking about "the great journey" it made me think how much of the forerunners history did the covenant uncover and misinterpret, like did they know about the human-forerunner war before they made first contact with humanity? if they learned humanity were once the enemies of their gods, you see where this is going.
It was also because when elites were killing humans and then found Spartans they managed to eventually see their face, which was pale, scared and hairless, like a corpse. They originally thought that they were demons coming back for revenge!
I’m pretty sure it’s also because every Spartan used to wear Mk4 and they all looked almost the exact same. So when a Spartan was killed they thought they had killed the only Spartan out there but another would always appear. So they thought it was an unkillable Demon they were fighting
I thought it was because in the beginning, Mjolnir armor made them all look alike. When they were taken down, another Spartan would take their place, and the Covenant thought the same ones were coming back to life. Anyway, I read that somewhere. 😊
It was also because the spartens would use the elite energy swords which they would say they where demons for because those where a type of like wholly reflects for them 👍
Wrong! Dante Sparda was the first, the original the only. The Son of Sparda gave his permission to have them create a warrior for humanity that was pattern after his skills and strength. •ONI: "We shall call them Spardans, after you." •Dante: "Thanks, but just call them Spartans. 300, Kratos and all that jazz." •ONI: "WTF is Kratos?"
You also forgot to mention that Elites couldn’t see the Spartans faces through the polarized shield…so to the covenant, they were faceless, soulless, demons hellbent on killing.
Coming back to reality the Marines were dubbed Devil Dogs in WWI because they were so aggressive and claimed territory of no man's land past the trenches. It's fitting bunji would use something similar
No the real reason is bc whenever they killed one they came back due to them all looking the same so in their eyes their foe wouldnt stay dead which made them called demon
Wasn’t another reason because some Spartans had the same armour so when they got 💀 the covenant thought it was the same one over and over again (I think 👍)
I noticed something really werid about Noble Six, maybe it's just me and my conspiracy theories but... SPARTAN-B312. Three ones (Adriana-111) Twelve (Michael-120) Noble Six (Jai-006) Gray Armor (Gray Team) Lone Wolf ("We go out. Alone. That's how we've always done this. We've never worked with others. Not even other Spartans." - Adriana-111) I'm VERY certain that it's just me.
I think Jai is also the one the set off a planet-destroying bomb that destroyed a Sanghellis colony populated by billions *after* the cease-fire (the news didn't reach him).
alot had to do with the original armor was all exactly the same so even if they glassed a planet thinking they killed the demon the in the next battle another shows up, spartans never die
The Banished didn’t use “demon” as slang, as you said. Or at least not command. Escharum himself said “Humanity calls you their savior. The Covenant, The Demon. The Banished? *(growling chuckle)*…. Prey.”
No. That's just Chief, "The Demon". Spartans are called demons because to the Covenant it seemed like the Spartans would rise from the dead after being killed to fight them again.
You forgot that the banished call the Spartans prey as Esherum says Humanity savior The Covenant demon The banished prey Sry I know 100% sure that I spelled his name wrong
The Spartans are called by such as “Demons” from the Covenant and by Atriox who’s the leader of the Banished. Just like how the Covenant called ODSTs as “Imps”
also to add nuance.. it's way to easy to assume just because the Covenant are the enemy that therefore they're automatically the bad guys.. but Bungie and 343 used enemy dialogue to imply there's more to it beneath the surface.. hot take but Flipyap did nothing wrong..
