Claire Lehmann and Zoe Booth discuss Queensland's new self-ID laws, how the pendulum has swung so far that "trad" is now counter-culture, and Zoe's online escapades messaging trolls who hate Quillette.
Apologies for the grainy image and glitchiness! It will be sorted next week :)
Claire's column: www.theaustralian.com.au/comm...
We also discuss Peter Wood's Quillette article titled After College: quillette.com/2023/06/21/afte...

Mental health - There is also a small community online of people self-diagnosing or claiming professional diagnoses of DID (what used to be multiple personality disorder), including posting videos of themselves online describing all of their alters and calling them out "at will" on camera. And while it's true our world is crazy and it's important to be able to discuss things like anxiety and depression, they seem to not understand that there can be periods of "normal" life that can contain these conditions in response to difficult events---a far cry from long term GAD or severe depression that compromises one's daily function. Someone with them doesn't have the time, energy, or gumption to stream themselves ranting. However, doing so is a special problem in and of itself. It's sad that this is happening over all with mental and emotional health, physical health, neuro differences. People genuinely challenged aren't taken seriously and may not get the support or help they need. Hopefully, professionals who deal with this are one step ahead in noticing.

Such a pleasure listening to two intelligent woman discussing these issues. More of this please! Also agree it’s surprising about complete lack of discussion on the changing of the nature of an identity document that at its heart is a record of birth (the sex at birth was actually the sex of the baby born - not how that baby identified 30 years later), especially compared to the controversy in the UK. Also Zoe - noting wrong with a bit of light hearted trolling … a la Elon Musk.

I've never understood why people want to change their birth certificate? On one hand, this could be a manifestation of extreme gender dysphoria, the "final step" so to speak... yet I'd be curious to know how many people who apply to change their birth certificate have already had full gender reassignment surgery? The fact that the legal structures in many countries in the "Anglosphere" have acquiesced to this so easily is rather suspicious, it's not benign and does skew certain medical and criminal statistics... mitigating the role of men and artificially amplifying the role women in certain social phenomena. Good on Claire & Zoe to discuss this, however what concrete steps have been taken to expose and resolve this?

"Androgynous" by the Crashtest Dummies (1991 album) was a song that celebrated "different", in a better way.

Zoe, you legend! Lol. Vegan/ Marxist/ Feminist. Keep some of that ideology. While we're on Marxism, can Quillette please be sure to cover the interests of the working class & and poor?

@Quillette 1) Universal basic income - anybody in society can lose their job due to illness, industry restructuring, criminalisation, etc. Some people are more vulnerable to this precarity. Those without a rich family or extensive social capital to lean on for support are at risk of homelessness. A universal basic income provides protection against this. 2) The criminalisation of the poor & working class. Women are the fastest growing prison population. Why? Possible factors to explore, feminist backlash in the policing of women (vengeful equity), offending related to untreated mental health & substance use disorder. 3) The lack of safe, affordable housing. Specifically, the low rate of available emergency housing for women fleeing violent relationships. These are just a few examples of woman centred concerns that primary impact poor/ working class.

A suggestion: It wasn’t evident from the thumbnail that this was one of those conversations between you two. Would be great if you could add yourselves to the thumbnail as with the previous Quillette Cetera convos.

It's amazing as a Gen z growing up realizing that music was kind of based in the 80s Too bad they thought synthesizers were cool.

80's music was for the most part cheesy & plastic. Just like the culture. There were of course outliers. Frank Zappa, for instance, didn't stop making fantastic music, no matter the decade, but I struggle to recall anything really memorable about the decade of Thatcher, Regan, yuppies and cokeheads.

@@jerzykaltenberg298 Disagree! The 80s was very creative and innovative time. Besides, every decade has has both its amazing and cheesy music. That said, I will agree though that there was indeed some music from the 80s that it's preferable to keep in memory rather than our personal collections.

It also makes tracking down criminals harder when they can just change their name at the drop of a hat.

The 'trad' path is not advisable since it already concedes too much to the modern liberal understand of freedom (i.e. one option from a selection on offer). The true and the good aren't 'options' to choose from, and in this sense both ends of the Liberal paradigm (conservative and 'liberal') are as bad as each other

Watching Contrapoints videos helped me understand how some believe that hormones, alone, make a woman. Put a dress on and some makeup, and the proper hormone completes the picture. It is performance/ appearance only, she seems to say.

The meta stuff around PRINCESS BRIDE is incredible. I had not really thought Morgenstom was a real person, per se, and it shows you how clever Goldman is.
