The reason why Lady Lihua didn't trust Lady Gyokuyou is two folded. First, there's the issue of emotional distress caused by her son's illness and by her own, second, the lives of concubines in the Imperial Harem was often one of competition, competition for the Emperor's favour and affection, as the more favoured a concubine was, the higher her standing within the Rear/Inner Palace was, and there was a lot of struggle recorded about it, even going as far as bullying and even assassination.
was looking for this same post before posting it myself :D one of the reasons You cant imagine it Miss Paws is the amount of separation from that time/world and ours, in our time it is rather unimaginable to poison a child (unless something is seriously wrong upstairs) but in the time setting of the show that was just one of the ways to rise or fall from power.
I can understand the reasoning behind it, but being said in public with so many witnesses screams to me "not an attempt at assassination". That being said, being poisoned and weakened can also affect her judgement, so I can get behind the "not of sound mind" explanation of it 😅
Also, Lady Lihua never saw Maomao's warning. It was one of her ladies-in-waiting that casually swiped the flower off the window sill. Lady Gyuokuo's crew delivered it, and the pink princess took the warning to heart and saved her child, her staff, and even herself.
The two concubines are basically competing against each other, so for one to suggest the other to stop using the makeup powder, seems to be a way to make her 'less pretty' for the emperor, and so the information is suspect. There might have been better ways to go about it, but she tried.
Being (in their eyes) a lowly servant girl, I don’t think she had a better way of doing it. They wouldn’t listen to her directly and she didn’t know anyone in the rear palace at the time, except for other servant girls.
It was said in ancient china women with broad hips can give birth safely, more and most of the time boys (cuz it was boys who inherit family titles/properties/etc..) and in addition if a woman have a big bust it can feed the baby with a copious amount of milk to raise them fat (having a fat/chubby baby in china is synonymous of health, whealth, auspiciousness and good future). That's why maomao couldn't become a low rank concubine. And she have freckles. In ancient china having darker skin color means working in the fields (being a peasant) and having frekles or smthing and not having 'perfect' 'smooth' 'without imperfections' skin means being attractive.
Maomao is voiced by the perfectly cast Aoi Yuki. Not many VAs have the charisma to carry a show like she can. Jinshi is voiced by Takeo Oostuka, who voiced Aqua Hoshino in Oshi No Ko, and Lady Gyoukuo is voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki, the VA of BOTH Anya Forger and Frieren!
sadly even in this era, there are still people who distrust doctors to the point of endangering, or even killing their own child. i think there was this case of parents refusing to bring their child to the doctor which lead to the child's death, and they're charged with murder if i'm not wrong
This show only gets better. It is sort of a detective procedural show, where Maomao uses her apothecary/medical training to solve crimes/mysteries. It also has a lot of humor too. As someone else mentioned, Mao = Cat, which is why we get the cute Maomao chibi cat. If you like apothecary stuff, you might enjoy the show: Management of a Novice Alchemist.
They do dances and others and often a man had to spend a lot of time and money to even have a chance to go into bed with a high class courtesan, as the less encounters she has the more desirable and rare it is considered. So most of the time it would really be entertainment and conversation.
Yes continue. Your reactions and commentary are good. Although the anime just released Episode 21 of 24, you will have a hard time not bing watching. The episodes always end either way great cliff hangers.
