Hey everyone! I wanted to add something here -- I hope it goes without saying that nobody should die because of distracted driving. I've lost multiple friends and family members do to car crashes. One death is too many. That said, every single person that says distracted driving is horrible has also done it. There's an innate hypocrisy there that I wanted to address. It's real easy to say that it's awful and shouldn't happen. It's another to acknowledge the reality. People simply won't stop looking at their phones, no matter how stiff the punishments get. Perhaps we didn't check off the necessary amount of bleeding heart sentiment, but sentiment doesn't save lives. If you disagree, then maybe consider that you've probably looked at your phone in the car as well.
Lawrence Sonntag In the US do you have the adverts for road safety? Like the Irish and UK videos, daytime advertising showing deaths as a shock warnings.
Unfortunately Lawrence and co. seems to be correct on the consensus that you can't help curb, or at least eliminate, distracted driving. I live in Vancouver B.C. in 2010 the province introduced very strict distracted driving legislation. Recently the penalties were even increased quite a bit further - I believe the minimum fine is now over $500. It's helped a bit, but unfortunately is still a rampant issue. Good stats on it in this article: www.cbc.ca/beta/news/canada/british-columbia/distracted-driving-road-safety-tickets-hard-to-beat-1.4118351
People that are very aware of the potential dangers can avoiding it if they try. While I'm sure most people have done it, don't assume it on everyone. Strictly speaking, looking at your phone in the car isn't really the problem. If the car is stopped (say at a stop light) its generally fine and I'm sure most people have at least done that. The problem tends to arises when you are actively driving (say on the freeway). That's not to say I disagree with your assessment of the situation, now or in the podcast, almost everyone does it. There are people who won't look at their phone while driving until they can find a safe situation, but unfortunately it is very rare.
the problem was before catching himself he brings it up as if the headline is all the facts when Funhaus writes blatantly false, titillating, clickbaity titles all the fucking time. too many people in general end up reading only headlines and use them as arguments when they have less than half the facts. Also just making your false title a question doesn't mean it's not clickbaity or deceiving to those who just happen upon the video. also to be clear i dont give a shit about the Doctor Who BS
ok so out of curiosity i checked it out, and their podcast is straight trash. i think they are all like 14-15 years old. the recording equipment (i dont think its even considered equipment rather then built in microphones or xbox live headsets) is trash, there is constant feedback on the mic's. they dont talk about ANYTHING other then whatever dumb game they play, and making some reallyyyy dumb overused out of date jokes, and call each other fuckboys and occasionally threaten each then belch out really irritating laughs...and trying to promote your channel on other youtubers pages is one of the easiest ways to get some major hate (this is only one of like 10 other rooster teeth/ other random channels they did this on.)
Just put your fucking phone down while you drive. Do you all lack such self-control that you can't not be connected to your device for a few minutes or hours? What is wrong with you. Driving is a privilege, NOT a right. Don't neglect others safety due to your own inept ability to detach from technology.
I mean, I use my phone's GPS or touchscreen radio on the dash or I use the bluetooth calls. I never browse social media or any other dumb shit like that.
Still, people won't care. If someone is going to do something, they'll do it no matter the consequences. I personally don't use my phone for anything but GPS on the road, and even then I'm at a red light if on the streets and if not, I'll pull over on the freeway.
What about Tesla's large screen? Isn't that larger version of Phone that distracted you while you are driving. Or is that different because it's part of the car even though it created the same effect as phone.
Usually places with relatively low populations don't have it. Big municipal cities will more often than not have "click it or ticket" laws for seat belts or distracted driving laws. Still, people will continue to do dumb shit behind a moving ton and a half metal block.
In australia its illegal to even have your phone in the centre bit of the car where your gear stick is. We have police officers who are on motorbikes who's jobs are to drive around looking into peoples windows at traffic lights, fining them.
I could never stand Australia. At least in Murica' if a cop tries some funny buzzinuss I can run knowning 90% of the time they won't chase and the other 10% they can't catch me unless I'm on the hwy.
yes cops are on a constant shooting rampage. as we speak they are firing over my head screaming at the top of their lungs. don't believe everything you hear your dumb fuck parents say.
Strange they just finished talking about distracted driving just after a girl just killed her sister because she was drunk and live streaming while driving, then rolled the car...
Lawrence apparently, and we cant say shit about it or we give into his troll bait. Even though its not funny in the least and very annoying. Lawrence is just too smurt for us.
Elyse doing her "what what whaaaatt?" thing she does at 42:52 is always amazing and hilarious. Some amazing editor should compile a super cut of these!
If anyone is only reddit can you start a thread to start keeping track of them then 5 years from now we can all bask in the glory of one of the men mansplaining something super deep that a tree with a philosophy degree would say and then Elyse having her mind blownnnnn!
Hey Lawrence, I have a few facts about the DUI-E law. So it was implemented after a lot of action by the family of a kid who lived in my county who was texting while driving and hit a semi head on and died on impact. Basically, the law means that you can't touch your phone at any time while your car is on, but the new law also covers other stuff. If you get pulled over for erratic driving and the officer can tell it was because of a distraction (food, drink, loud radio) then that's also under the DUI-E law. It's kind of annoying, but definitely necessary. Thanks for another great episode of Dude Soup!
Interesting, as a British person I haven't touched my phone when driving. And whenever we see someone on their phone whilst driving (at least my area) we immediately think "what an idiot".
Dude Soup was how I became really interested in the Funhaus channel! I often try and recommend you guys to as many friends as I can. What I find to be unique about Dude Soup is your ability to mostly stay on a topic and give your honest opinions. It isn't often that I get to hear RU-vidrs I personally enjoy really talk about internet/game related issues while also switching between comedy a serious discussion. I don't have to necessarily agree with you all, but I can still hear an outside opinion and enjoy myself. This is by far my favorite podcast so I hope you don't feel that this is an unloved piece of content! Love you guys
It's simple. The game should have at least worked at the Pokemon GO event (despite everyone's personal feelings about the app itself and the community). It was simple, lazy and poor preparation and people paid for this event. I don't care what it is and what event it is the app/game/movie that you PAID for should at least work at minimum. The hate and behavior was poor BUT it would not have been an issue had Niantic had done proper prep.
I think what funhaus is getting at was the angry event goers were taking out they're frustration on people that didn't deserve it. It would be like me yelling at the janitor because the stock price was falling. Does he work for the company? Yes, but it isn't his fault the stock price is falling. The same applies to Pokemon GO fest. Yelling at the metaphorical mouth pieces of the event isn't going to make the app start working and yelling at them isn't going to make the public relations department decide to give the fest goers a refund.
Vloggerihardlyknowher But it was the CEO though, right? That's the guy you can take responsible if things go to shit, that's how it works. He's not at all a janitor. I mean, I'm not taking the side of the boo-Sayers, I couldn't care less. Just your example doesn't translate to this situation.
thames21, I'd hazard a guess that the CEO was neither the tech guy, nor the event planner. While he does bear some responsibility simply by being the head guy, he was surely let down by people who had been set the task of making sure the game was working for the event, and the team who should have done their due diligence in making sure they had deals with mobile operators to ensure the high bandwidth of the event could be coped with (something that is common at sporting event and music festivals)
I live in Washington and thanks for covering this. Just an addition to what Lawrence had already started about the new law, if you get pulled over and you are eating or smoking it is a secondary offense.
Ahaha the show on the screen is an awful italian gameshow on the italia uno channel (part of the mediaset network, property of Silvio Berlusconi), good pick Lawrence :D
As a portuguese I can say its really funny hearing you guys talk about us. So in case you-re interested, besides what Bruce said: Drive you have to be over 18 (cars) and 16 (bikes); Drink you have to be over 18 (except beer which is 16)
Don't know if we have it different in the UK, but most people are absolute spastics on the road. Harsh penalties for mobile usage are welcomed. How long are you guys driving each day? Can you not just leave your phone for that time? You maybe need an AA for phones.
From a visual standpoint I always thought the old desk podcast version where better. Not just from the content it was just easier to watch. Also liked that someone was playing a game, the random videos in the back aren't always interesting. As for the content, I really enjoy everything you guys do especially when you guys are yourselves. Lawerence is MVP
It's like a vote Bob, to discourage it from being used in future videos. So I would hope the end is nigh for the air horn. Also its woe, not whoa. Whoa is what you say to a horse to get it to stop. If you're going to be a type of ass, don't be the dumb kind. Bob Parker2 minutes agoOh no! Whatever will they do if FaultAtHands dislikes their video. Whoa is me, the end is nigh.
That sort of Bond/Kingsman plots they brought up about technology were actually really interesting to hear in thinking how people would react to something like that, great podcast guys.
So rather than people taking responsibility for their actions and actually concentrating on driving, we have to live with distracted driving until technology can take the responsibility away from us?, damn, that's some bonkers logic.
I agree, but they made some good points about why nothing else would work. There would have to be very strict laws against texting like Elyse said about drunk driving and there would have to be a method of proof that's far more effective than Gus's bus cops. It would just never work. People are just too corrupt when it comes to their desire vs their responsibility.
It's illegal to hold a phone and drive here, they don't have to prove you were doing anything on it, it should carry the same weight of penalty as drink driving as studies have shown the affects are the same.
I think they said "deal with it" until then. In that case, they are probably talking about laws and police action to deal with it, not that your everyday Joe should just live with it.
Hope the channel does better! You guys, your opinions, and this channel are genuinely one of the few things I care to listen to on youtube or on the internet/media/radio in general. I would really be saddened to see it go and that's rare. You guys are hitting a niche that doesn't exist on youtube or really even on the internet in general. The channel is informative, it's entertaining, it's diverse in its delivery, and it's great in a lot of other ways. Plus It's easy to tell that you guys care and are doing your best to continually improve yourselves and the channel. I just really don't understand why it's so underrated.
They should just make it a $368 first fine like it is here in Vancouver, BC Canada. I don't touch my phone because of the reality of that fine, distracted driving is a problem.
I think that part of the reason Dude Soup isn't doing as well as it has in the past is that you're so cynical. All this talk of "we live in a society where..." comes across as you pointing fingers at just about anyone and anything. You spent several minutes talking about how nothing has any value, but why bother? You're not philosophers, and you're not backing any of it up with proof or evidence; you're just being downers. Stick to what you do best.
Having the odd serious topic like in this episode is refreshing in my opinion. To be brutal have you seen the world lately? Tricky to not be down about it all aswell lol.
Another reason which necessarily doesn't support nor contradict Moose's opinion is that FunHaus always talks about other people and hardly talks about what they are doing whether that be because they don't have the stories or don't want too, it doesn't feel personal, more cold and calculated talking about topics to get views rather than discussing the lives of people who a large proportion of the audience want to hear about. Of course i and many others want to hear your opinions on the latest news but perhaps a sprinkling of more personal content. Simply the opinions of a listener who feels like disconnected.
Ye but do personal topics fit on Dudesoup? I know it to be the show where Laurence has picked a couple of things to talk about that might be interesting to us and we here their opinions on it and the odd joke in there as they are funny guys.
I live in Tacoma, Washington and it's not just using your cell phone while driving that has a fine attached to it now. Eating while driving can get you a fine, drinking any sort of beverage can get you a fine but these things aren't enough to get you pulled over on their own.
It's always interesting to hear these things that remind you how different the states is. Those fines are soooo cheap, I see some people on their phone but most people are too scared of getting caught and paying hundreds of dollars and having their licenses increase significantly. It could also have to do with how bad traffic is here, it's a very obvious threat when you are constantly having to stop and react to everyone around you.
I was really disappointed with there views on the whole Pokémon go Fest situation, I do agree that the person who through the water bottle was an idiot but I have complete sympathy for everyone booing, they paid upwards of 100$ and for some hotel and travel expenses to catch exclusive Pokémon, what they got was standing in a crowded field in summer heat. Niantic is completely responsible, they should have had the foresight to contact cell carriers and prepare for the overload. I just felt Funhaus came across really elitist by having almost no sympathy for all the fans simply because they play Pokémon and therefore shouldn’t complain. Just a dumb argument IMO
They didn't say that Niantic as a whole wasn't the responsible party, they noted that the on stage personalities are the one who were having to deal with an unruly crowd even though they weren't the individuals to blame for the short comings; while yes the crowds displeasure was justified to a point, there wasn't a need to act so uncivilized as to throw stuff at the stage personality, who again isn't the tech master who's responsible for all the problems; theres nothing wrong with holding people accountable but at least put the blame in the right place. you don't blame the cashier when the executives change store policy ya know
Let me start this saying that I love Funhaus (Except Kovic), and this is intending to be positive criticism. You guys should let Lawrence expose the facts of the topic in question BEFORE you express your opinions. Regarding the Pokemon Go Fest, they (the Funhaus guys) where against the crowd without knowing that people paid to be there, and Niantic didn't provide a good response to the Internet demand required for the event. You can't charge people, do a mediocre technical preparation and don't expect booing from the crowd. The same happened in the podcast last week (or the week before, can't remember) where Lawrence started to expose the topic and without let it him finish you guys started to talking and make your opinions, without being properly informed. I'm interested in your opinion, but once you know the facts and you know what are you talking about. Love you, guys Thank you. Have a great day.
Maybe Lawrence should try putting together 'slick' presentations to distract them from their phones and convey the information? I'd recommend a slideshow with lots of awful clipart and ALL the screen transition effects. And bullet-points. So. Many. Bullet-points. Those always work, right?
Click Clack Bang Exactly. Thank you so much. That was it. I do appreciate their opinion, but sometimes they are clearly not informed and say thinks really out of place, like that CNN meme
I keep trying to watch these, but they keep being so bad. I wish they'd stop wasting time and resources on these snooze inducers and put it towards something everyone loves like Sex Swing S2
Here in Perth, Australia. We have undercover motorcycle police (with helmet cams) ride between traffic during peak hour. They go back through the footage later and send $400 fines to the drivers. It's definitely slimming down the number of people using their phones while driving. Also to add to this. Using a phone while driving is only ok when. Answering or ending a call while the phone is securely mounted to the vehicle
I live in Washington and the law is so ridiculous the first day it started I saw a old man shaving with an electric razor in his car while he was driving down the freeway 😂
Everything was going fine until Elyse said "Gracias"...we're portuguese, it's "Obrigado" you maple syrup eating bi....I'm kidding, you're ok, I'll let it slide, but it's "Obrigado", get it right.
I chuckled when Adam said "these youngsters", in reference to the Pokemon Go fest crybabies, when in reality, the majority were as old, if not older, than Adam himself.
I never use my phone either. I listen to the radio like people used to do. If someone wants to text me or message me on Facebook, I'll tell them ahead of time that I'm going to be driving and they need to wait for my reply.
I drive a truck for a living, and I can say, the texting and driving issues is everywhere and a huge issue. In my seat I get a real great view of everything you are doing in your car, It is exactly as James describes. Folks just bury their faces in their phones, not only that but watch videos, play with themselves, read, fiddle with something in the back seat and so on. Passing these laws to punish phone usage is doing nothing, the issue needs to be resolved another way.
Lawrence. You're killing me. Proving that someone was on their phone isn't an exact science. If a call or text is being done at the time of the incident, then obviously it's distracted but if an accident occurs while changing music through your iPhone or doing your hair etc...those are not easily proven and get marked as a simple accident. You guys will change your tune when someone you know dies as a result of this sort of thing.
The whole bit about "Welcome to Blizzcon, WoW servers are being wiped in 5 minutes, the doors are locked, we've unleashed the man-spiders" was dark and fascinating. I would pay money to watch 1000 dedicated WoW subscribers be told this by somebody on stage.
We still talk about games and we have another podcast for movies, so that discussion is saved for that. Problem is there aren't good games discussions to have every week. The SNES Mini podcast we did performed REALLY poorly.
I get that game news is lacking and you're just trying to fill the void. It just feels really weird to talk about texting and driving for so long. Like its forced (and maybe its not). You just lost me after 20 minutes is all im saying.
I enjoy Funhaus but I feel they're making light of the fact people use their phones in cars. As in, because "everyone" does it its not a big deal. Distracted driving is a big deal in the UK. Whether you get caught or not its still a big deal and should be stopped immediately. We still run adverts for this too. EDIT: So now they're talking with Gus and they ALL don't want to drive? Jesus does no one here enjoy driving anymore? I can just tell they all use their fucking phones in their cars even at lights. Not good guys, not good at all...
I think its more I would hope we could reflecting on my comment now. As with anything humans do, could we stop a certain behaviour completely? No, so yes I begrudgingly agree with you there. I just think adding technology to the problem to solve it instead of correcting it with will power and consequences seems to be the current trend globally and that in my opinion is not the way to do it. It was interesting about the whole self-driving cars thing though because I do think that automobiles will go through the trend horses did when they were the main mode of transport. They're mainly used for entertainment now instead of transport. So would the same thing happen to cars? Maybe so. I was questioning your thoughts rather than listening and watching it again I can see your point of view. Having seen what can happen to someone who's been hit by a careless driver I probably feel more strongly about it than some. In case you were interested I've popped some information below about the consequences of driving with a phone in the UK. Anyway guys apologies if my comment ruffled feathers ^^, Much love, Hj "It’s illegal to use your phone while driving or riding a motorcycle unless you have hands-free access, such as: a bluetooth headset voice command a dashboard holder The law still applies to you if you’re: stopped at traffic lights queuing in traffic supervising a learner driver Hands-free If you use your phone hands-free, you must stay in full control of your vehicle at all times. The police can stop you if they think you’re not in control because you’re distracted and you can be prosecuted. When you can use a hand-held phone You can use a hand-held phone if either of these apply: you’re safely parked you need to call 999 or 112 in an emergency and it’s unsafe or impractical to stop Penalties; You can get 6 penalty points and a £200 fine if you use a hand-held phone. You can also be taken to court where you can: be banned from driving or riding get a maximum fine of £1,000 (£2,500 if you’re driving a lorry or bus) If you passed your driving test in the last 2 years, you’ll lose your licence."
Laws on their own won't help much, but consistent enforcement of said laws does have an effect. The UK had an uphill battle of getting the police to regularly enforce the laws regarding phone use in cars, having had the laws in place for years before they had a noticeable effect by rather than just making examples of a few people, enforcing them on a much wider, consistent basis. Though it is still a battle to reduce it, especially regarding goods transport and taxi services. Taxis I've seen though at least go hands-free most of the time now.
So, I got started in my career by working in auto claims. Severity is going up nation wide, and I think that's the bigger issue. Injuries and damages are growing rapidly, far beyond what you'd expect from inflation. So it's not just that the number of accidents has increased, it's severity too. I've seen some really, really gruesome stuff. I'm 100% behind ANYTHING that might lessen accidents. Not saying that evidence you pointed at is wrong, Lawrence, just that, from someone who's been on the front lines of car accidents and has talked to a lot of injured folks and a lot of people who have lost a friend or family member in a car accident, I just think any measure is a good measure. Cars are heavy chunks of metal hurtling down the road, and people don't seem to understand the dangers. Loved the show as always!
I really did think it was a fascinating show though. Elyse's comments in particular really line up with my personal views. Sorry for my soap box comment.
I just ignore it and watch for the funny bits in their videos. Can't fault them for their opinions, just enjoying their characters over the years. That goes for most entertainment media as well for me.
Robbie Rotten Mens Rights Activists. The people who complain about the unfairness of the justice system in favor of women, male suicide rates, and other such issues. They are like modern day feminists if those feminists had something real to complain about in the western world.
I want to see a compilation of the times Adam has said "I wanna show this problem to caveman/world war 2 soldiers" on the podcast. I feel like it would be longer than an actual podcast by now
In the UK in the 1970s there was posters in bars of a manual gear stick with 5 gears with the implication being not to drive after the 5th drink. Time changes social norms.
Update from Seattle: Noticed a lot of people just randomly pulling over or parking in the center lane just to use their phones. Almost just as dangerous.
