Just wanted to say I'm really glad to see the discussions happening here. It can be scary to be honest.

But it's a healthy topic to talk about, glad you guys put this up for everyone to start re-evaluating their approaches or how they view relationships in a whole (even though you all mentioned it multiple times in the past)

Yep and it's just how you guys talked about it in the podcast - anything to carry on a conversation helps. Learning how to carry on a conversation is probably the biggest challenge growing up to be an adult, and I think it's made even more difficult if you're not experienced talking to people in person (which is so different from talking via the Internet).

Honest advice for people who think Funhaus are like their friends... pay attention to the conversations around you. Funhaus has over 1 million subs. Just at work where i am I found around 10 of their subs, and 1 other person besides myself who actually purchased their merch. If you feel you can't find people who like the same stuff as you maybe it's because we're just not paying enough attention to the people around us. I met so many people at work just walking by their desks at lunch and hearing them talk about funhaus. They might not be the funhaus crew, but in mutual understanding and respect of what funhaus does it's a great jumping off point for making the kind of new friends you want in real life.

Tarks Gauntlet thats a good point. I met a few people on the bus who were funhaus fans and i'm a bit weird socially but i think i can hang. I could kinda tell they were too but funhaus and videogames made for a fun bus ride home. Thank you FH

I'm pretty socially inept lol. I just walk around the office sometimes and over-hear these conversations and just be like "Are you guys talking about funhaus?" It always feels awkward starting an approach but by the time I finish the question its like there's already an unspoken bond lol.

I'm from the US. Last year I was in Japan and was getting on a train from Tokyo to Osaka when some dude on the other side of the train platform waves at me and points at his chest. I was like, "what the hell is he pointing at?" Then I realized he was referencing to the Funhaus shirt I was wearing (the shirt with just the large orange FH logo). 5,000 miles away and someone notices my FH shirt. I went up to him, shook his hand, both acknowledging the awesomeness of Funhaus, talked a bit then we went our separate ways. The Internet is worldwide. Funhaus might not be super popular everywhere in the world but they have fans sprinkled all over it.

I'm really grateful I have a group of really good friends and at the same time I can totally see where this guy is coming from. Whenever my friends are busy or we can't hangout I'll just watch a podcast like DudeSoup or watch a person playing a game whilst I also might be playing that same game. It feels like I'm sort of sitting with those people instead and its comforting. Also I'll listen to a podcast or group of people talking on a video whilst I fall asleep, it's kind of relaxing in that respect.

The "friend simulator" thing that is often mentioned hit me hard. I was at a bar in Austin after work a few months back, and in walks Bruce Greene and Bethany. I choke on my drink, stand up, and immediately rush up to him as I exclaim "Holy fucking shit it's Bruce!!" As I did this, subconsciously I think I was expecting an embrace, as if two old friends had reunited after long years apart. As I saw Bruce's reaction of leaning back and saying "woah.. hey, what's up" I had to make a conscious effort to remind myself that this guy has no idea who I am, I'm probably freaking him out, and he probably doesn't wanna be bothered. Bruce was super nice, btw, and he circled back and chatted with me and my roommate for a bit. Already feeling foolish, I feigned drunkenness, and said that I had a bit too much to drink, and that I didn't wanna bother him. Bruce, if you're reading this, my coworker was gonna try and hit on Bethany, but I told him "No, you fool! That's Bruce's woman!" (and he just looked at me weird). Got your back, mayng.

This is such an interesting topic. People do struggle to make friends and supplement the need of friends through tv, comics, RU-vid, etc.. but on the flip side people also learn how to interact with others through these outlets. People can view social norms, funny interactions, and appropriate methods to creating a suitable atmosphere that people would enjoy. The real issue is just like how they explained at the beginning. You have to realize that your "interactions" with these "friends" (RU-vid, tv, books, etc) are not real, but you can still go out and make similar scenarios happen irl. To all those people who might be struggling out there I say just be you. You are cool, funny, and unique in your own way. I promise there are friends out there for everyone. You just have to make small steps to find them. Good luck!

the part where the guy wrote on Reddit, that Lawerence read. hit me right at home as well. i mean I KNOW FH are not my friends. but i watch them because they ENTERTAIN me and comfort me in my boring life. i literally have no friends. im 26, doing the same routine. working nights, just saving up money trying to decide what to do with it when the time comes. i guess happiness for me is a long ways. i even dated a girl a couple months ago to fill that hole i feel inside me. but broke up with her because i just couldnt handle it no more. i broke her heart, i felt like shit. apologized but it is what it is. for everyone out there who feel out of place. trust me i know how it is. but everytime i think about it, i just feel pathetic about it. but one day i will be happy. one day. sorry for shitty post. im going to bed. keep up the great work as always FH 😁

Re: the guy Lawrence quotes towards the beginning. I was in the same place a couple of years ago. I was depressed etc, and relied on games and other personalities to fill voids, that and lots of weed. I still haven't missed a funhaus video in the two years since. I made a bunch of serious changes, looked at what it was that was really causing my problems. I got out of a toxic relationship, I worked my ass off to get a better job and pushed myself to do more. It may not work for everyone, as were all different, but for me, the best way to beat problems with depression is to bite that damn bullet and make the changes. Ignore the lethargy that comes with the condition, push and push and push. Things get better when you make them better.

I currently work at a College. I worked here back in 2002 and then came back again after 10 years. I noticed a big difference in the foot traffic and people occupying the student center. Back ion 2002 there use to be people in the area until like 3am. Studying, socializing and just hanging out. When I came back in 2012 I noticed a huge difference. The Student center becomes a ghost town after the Cafe closes at night. It is not like students are hanging around after getting a coffee. Nope they are getting food, leaving and going back to their room. The only thing I can really attribute to this major decline of use to a place that was designed for students to use is Social media and cell phones. We literally get people coming to the office wanting us to do something about person A because they said something about them rude/nasty on a social media platform.
@aj2563
@aj2563 7 лет назад
Crimson Wolf huh, very interesting, I currently attend college and our student center is always packed, but it does thin out a bit late at night. I kinda attribute it to the library always being packed with people studying, or people hanging out in the dorms. Interesting to see your perspective tho

bruce brings up a wonderful idea when he said "very self-aware" regarding the person's post. It is a great step for the person to recognizes his own situation. i say this largely due to how similar it is to something I've also went through. At the beginning of it, I also think of the unhealthy source as a toxic gas that pollutes my life. however, I overcome this by seeing the source as something I could learn from. figuratively, it's like climbing a ladder and then get blocked by a ceiling. once you're able to recognize the ceiling as something you can grow from, then the ceiling becomes a foundation. the idea you desire becomes the source of motivation! I hope the person can also find his or her way through that stage of life!

Don't be afraid to keep trying to socialize. You'll feel bad about failing to socialize more-less only if you try to be someone you're not during the attempt. Just don't be afraid to apologize and be polite (at least a bit). It may seem like you're not getting anywhere, you have absolutely no friends and you're just sinking all your free time on playing games because that's the only thing that's keeping you from breaking under the depression, but sometimes all you need to do is just be polite/friendly to 1 person at work and the next thing you know you have someone you make jokes with on a regular basis.

I like this topic of you guys being considered "friends" because of how I use your podcasts. I'm an extrovert that's energized by the presence of people. But sometimes I have so much work that I often work alone depending on the space I might need vs what spaces my friends might need. (I need a print shop, one of my friends needs a wood shop, and the other needs a computer lab that has cintiqs.) But if I feel too lonely, I become unmotivated to create. So, when my friends and I aren't able to work together, these podcasts keep me going for longer periods of time when music isn't enough.

I saw this problem a lot when I watched Kinda Funny, where they promote the "best friend" mentality. There is a point where it tips to toxicity when the community honestly believes that they are entitled to this real life friendship between the entertainer and themselves. People getting really mad, and really sad when the entertainers wouldn't live out their expectations. I just think there needs to be a better understanding of this issue from the entertainers themselves (no one should pander to it, or encourage it), but also the community needs to understand it as well. Ultimately its on them to run their own lives, and they shouldn't blame or find fault in the entertainers.
@iamtheju

Riley Brewer I thought of this too when Adam said about Best Friends. I watch a lot of Kinda Funny stuff and I am sure that when Greg says best friends he is being genuine, but it certainly gets taken the wrong way and used to justify bad attitudes by some fans. I think of the Best Friends thing as more like Beliebers for Justin Beiber fans or Idiots (Idiot Club) for Green Day fans. It is the name given to the Kinda Funny fans, not an actual description of what they are. It's a shame not everyone gets that.

I remember when i first stumbled into you guys on the internet, back when you were in inside gaming. Back then and still somewhat now, id find myself relating to a lot of the things you guys say or what points of view you stand in. However, i never once had the thought of being "friends" simply because to jame's point, i dont know you. Its all just entertainment based off the personality of such great and funny people. When i watch the post show and see just how many people rely on you to give them advice, or help with problems it reminds me that there are people out there that infatuate themselves with personalities on the internet. Even after all the interactions i have with Funhaus on twitter, i still know that they are entertainers and im a spectator. I dont know wether or not this is an age thing, where the older you are you see things differently, or maybe just the way i am in general. To end my point, i watch you guys everyday and you certainly have helped me laugh in times of need. And i along with thousands of people am grateful you do what you do. Im not trying to attack anyone, or make fun of anyone, because like adam said, everyone has a place they can call their own. And Because of Funhaus i was able to meet cool people like Kel, and be part of a very cool community. Thanks for everything that you do. Okay, rambling is over.

I have Asperger's syndrome and depression and I'm in school to be a psychiatrist so from my minimal medical knowledge and experience with these things: medication works the best, but if you don't want to take medicine (for whatever reason, it totally works) or if you don't have insurance and cant afford it the best way to combat social anxiety and depression is to keep busy. Whatever it is you like to do, do it more then you wont have time to be depressed

Personally, I think that it isn't the FunHaus, AH, or any similar channel's responsibility to make sure that their content isn't supplementing people's actual real life relationships. Even though it might be damaging to some people that doesn't mean that it it should fall on FunHaus to make sure they're not doing that. My experience with this is that I literally grew up watching RU-vidrs. I've been watching Adam on Machinima since Inside Halo just to give you an idea of how long I've been around. I just turned 20 in April. I've gone through depression myself and used youtube personalities, video games, and books as a supplement for social interaction. But as I grew up I learned that I shouldn't do that. I learned that I needed to develop socially to develop as a human. Now in no way did I stop watching content or playing video games. And I admit that I'm sort of a lucky case. I went through high school with a good group of friends and I have still have a good group of friends in college. But I think it's important that people understand that in order to make progress you need to be willing to learn and get better. Easier said than done but that's the gist of it. I think what I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't blame your social/psychological problems on something that is optional. You should take responsibility for your own mental state and try to seek progress or help in reality and not stay stuck in digital voids like youtube videos of people you don't know, reddit posts, and random forums. Especially if you're a 20-something adult. It's extremely hard but the first step is always the hardest.

The discussion being had by Funhaus is somewhat defensive and insinuating that there is some sort of responsibility on their end, but I don't think that's the actual topic trying to be discussed by the OP. I wish they hadn't jumped to that conclusion so quickly, because there's a lot of non-presumptuous discourse to be had on the subject. Equally, I don't think it's prudent to immediately assume that lack of real life relationships automatically equates to a condition that needs to be cleansed. That type of finger-pointing is dangerous to disseminate to the masses.

yeah, some are introverts and luckily have the means to get what they like through internet, and will enjoy this type of content without necessarily enjoying doing this interactions themselves. I can personally relate in a way, since I choose who I want to spend my time with, by experience putting yourself with people you don't know/understand can be a mixed bag, sometimes you get to like them or at least enjoy a different point of view in life, or just realize you don't fit in or find them quite boring, same goes on their side, but guess that more social people are less worried of this and won't mind it and will move on to another interaction. The issue however, is when you are troubled by this and want to take action on it, I presume the guy in the vid realized at some point that he was compensating for something that he wanted to do *himself*. In another note, I always wonder how much control do we have about how we feel about this, perhaps some people will interact a lot and still not enjoy it as much as someone that maybe interacts much less, other cases being not feeling right as much as you do it, I tend to gravitate towards the last with random people and the former when I hang out with a friend (it's also interesting how people can shut down when there's more than 1 person in a room and be less interested to participate). I can go on with examples but I think there's nothing wrong with not interacting with people as long as you don't feel it's damaging to yourself or others.

I don't see you guys as friends, but I do see yous as an entertainment channel, that helped me laugh when times got tough. Which makes me thankful for the content you guys give out. Because of that, I will always be a fan.

closedmouth it's definitely bad advice in that it's hard to follow, but it's 100% true and the key to not fearing social interaction. it's something that took me a long time to get over, the fear of looking/sounding dumb. But once I did, I was much happier and able to go out and talk to random strangers, etc.

From a guy who just went through his first year of uni, especially in freshers week, meeting so many new people and making so many new friends in the way that I have had been fantastic-yet I am still to find anyone as funny as Adam, James, Bruce and Laurence etc in their dynamic. I appreciate them for the comedy they bring to, which i use in, my life , and I dont think its a bad thing to say that i love them more than some of my friends for that, even if I wouldnt consider them as such.

Come on, Elyse! There is a _massive_ difference between a 'friend simulator' and just having online friends. RU-vidrs don't usually interact with the audience, online friends can pick and chose who and how they interact. Good people will always be good people, no matter how you fucking know each other.

I'm in the Air Force and was stationed over seas for over 10 yrs. While I was over seas I came across Inside Gaming, when you all worked there, and have enjoyed your shows ever since. I understand when some people latch on to some groups of people on RU-vid that possibly have, or seem to have, the same way of thinking as they might. I don't have a problem with making friends or getting out, but when you have a job where you move around all the time and work all kinds of crazy hours, it's nice at the end of the day see some familiar faces. Also, in a world full of snowflakes and everyone wanting to be so P.C., it's great to still have a group of people like yourselves that don't give a fuck and say what is on their minds. Keep up the good work.

i get the whole anxiety thing i wanna say i have it because sometimes i struggling leaving the house usually wait at the front door for a few moments before i leave and so on but from what i've noticed you can fall into depending on online personalities for the social benefits what helped me was going to a gym to exercise it got me out the house and my mood improved didnt feel so down about myself aswell, then after i got a job i made decent friends within a few months there so its a slow process nothings guaranteed but i find the more i do and the less i think the less my anxiety impacts me. oh and a side note taking slow deep breaths helps me when i feel like the anxiety is coming on.

The way I choose which is more Hard Netting is thinking of the phrase "That's enough internet for the day." Something thats obsure, unorthodox, and/or downright weird and only practiced by a specific person or small group. Really something you'd find only if you really dug through the internet yourself.
