Its all about finding the mechanic with the right set of tools and the knowlegde a patience to use them properly. I really wish my nearby shops had the mentality and love of good work Calvin shows in these videos. I have learned quite a bit from these videos. But this is probably a job for which I would always seek a good shop. Keep up the good work.

Yeah the head tubes in these older ridged frame bikes are crazy, nowadays if your a tall rider you just get a bigger tire or a taller seat tube, in the 80's and 90's if you were a tall rider they just stretched the frame, back then I guess it was the easiest way 😅

not a proper bike shop if it doesn't have basic tools, it's just a retail shop, and best left well alone. They will send your repairs to another shop and charge a levy, and charge a lot of money for new parts where simple fixes and repairs are the order of the day for an experienced and knowlegeable shop.

@joppek77
@joppek77 4 года назад
Yea, facing and chasing the threads only needs to be done once (by the bike shop, typically) and your bb will then always be nice, parallel and dead easy to install. Tricky thing about pressfit is that you need to take care and ensure a good parallel fit every single time you put on a new bb. If I were to buy a new frame, I'd definitely want a BSA threaded one again, or one of the newer T47 style BBs.
@MaplePanda04
@MaplePanda04 4 года назад
SCOTT FLYNN Threaded is actually less precise than press fit. There has to be a gap between the threads or it won’t turn. Hambini did the math, and a theoretically perfect threaded BB is worse than some PF brands already.
@ClockworksOfGL
@ClockworksOfGL 4 года назад
joppek77 - I don’t understand the big advantage of T47 over BSA. I’m sure it’s *better*, but is it better enough to justify switching from the old standard? At least press-fit has a cost advantage.

@JogBird
@JogBird 4 года назад
the issue is if you have a local high point, so when you screw in the bb, the bb pivots on that point cuasing it to jam or misalign if the face is otherwise flat except for an isolated valley, then its no issue because the valley will not touch the bb

You'd want avoid removing so much material that the BB shell width goes out of spec. Ideally, you'd want it to be exactly 68 mm, 73 mm or whatever the BB shell of your frame should be. It's probably wise to measure it before and after facing. If it turns out to be too narrow, you can always shim the BB cups.

No mention of measuring distance from newly faced surfaces to centerline of frame. Curious. Yes, shims can help. Still...
@ajwitt7472
@ajwitt7472 2 года назад
I can't think of a reliable way to find precisely the centreline of a frame. Facing (assuming you're not a completely hamfisted bodger, in which case you shouldn't attempt it) is only taking fractions of a mm off a frame so that centreline measurement would also have to that precise. It's not enough to measure the BB as there's no guarantee it's centred relative to the steering axis either. Having done several road bike builds none have had BB shells precisely 68mm wide before starting. The worst, which was a prototype frame I got cheap from a boutique designer, was 67.7mm wide. With Shimano cranks and shims there's a fair bit of leeway in preloading the bearings, plus you might want to shim the chainline according to personal preference.

Brazing, and welding are completely different. I would think Calvin would understand this, but he clearly says "welded" and "welding" in the beginning of the video.
