CLARIFICATION ON VIDEO: I mentioned the BO-HI termination into the nakago was a prefered method, would be partially incorrect, while there are historical representations of this done, it was more for other purposes or results. I personally prefer it on this particular sword for aesthetics, abit more weight off the blade that is a heavier dotanuki, and it was executed so well on the nakago. On this sword, for me, it checks all boxes. Thanks for watching all.

Couldn't agree more! and you should know with the pieces you have, They are a group that puts pride and quality craftsmanship above meeting deadlines and honestly they have been overwhelmed as they are a small forge...so people are waiting long periods of time for their swords or even return calls...many people are very annoyed. This same sword is now about 1k on their site.

Awww yeah been waiting for this vid!and so far I'm 6 min. in and your doing a great job. The tsuka core looks really well done! 👌 As far as I know, if a tsuka has panels of samegawa they carve sections in so the samegawa is inset. I have never seen panels just set on the tsuka core without sections chiseled in for them. Even though Huawei fittings (habaki, seppa, fuchi, kashira and menuki) are very plain they are done well for sure. Ok back to the show. Lol! I'm sure I'll be leaving a bunch more comments as I go haha
@JoeSteel1
@JoeSteel1 2 года назад
Most production swords of the norm don't put in that effort to carve a section for the same to sit on so it's seamless under the ito, very impressed, I'll trade time for quality any day, the pieces are so clean and well done, sometimes over embellishments just give you a sloppy mess
@Katana-Karl
@Katana-Karl 2 года назад
@@JoeSteel1 I think they do chisel out sections. Like I said I've seen many many lower end katana with panels and all have had chiseled out sections for the samegawa. They definitely weren't as perfectly chiseled as Huawei but they were there. Do you own any katana that the samegawa panels was just glued to the core without sections chiseled out for them?

What a beauty I'm super jealous (the good kind) glad you got such a good piece! I'd probably only go for cutting noodles and tatami if it were mine though just coz the polish is so nice :) also concurred about the menuki, I've heard people say they like them on the inside of the palms, but they're supposed to be under your fingertips side to provide purchase / grip, its just some menuki a better shaped then others for that purpose and some can be a bit too bulky. also very impressed by the level of detail on the tang. Has to be the new favorite I'm sure.
@JoeSteel1
@JoeSteel1 2 года назад
It is stated, as Tamashagiri polish, not too mirror like, which I prefer, if I cut bottles at all, they would only be soft plastic not to scratch the surface, but by the look of the quality, it should just clean off. The menuki placement, hysterically has been both sides I believe but placed under finger tips is a preference of mine...Definitely is one of, if not finest quality katana, very impressed with it thus far...thanks for your support Joske.

It's very unlikely the "foam insert" is there for protecting anything other than fitment. That plastic material is being used as a spacer probably. Real katana and all other katana make it just fine without this added piece. I appreciate the time taken to ensure better fit even though I prefer it need not be there in the first place. Very few companies take the time here. Good job Huawei! A few weeks ago, my Dragon Sword (two actually) arrived. One of them had this piece of white plastic being used as a spacer just like yours. Funnily enough, although Dragon Sword, the spacer said Zsey. One company or two, friends or whatever... Dragon Sword are REALLY nice swords even next to some of my $~2000 swords. I'm going to order two Zsey here really soon. Your videos on them got me interested. You are one of my favorite reviewers, thanks for all the hard work.
@JoeSteel1
@JoeSteel1 Год назад
Definitely buddy and thanks for the kind words....I know they are most likely spacers for a more secure fit, but I wanna believe that they can also act as a protective layer on the wood tsuka pushing into the Fuchi especially when pushing into place....but either way so much credit to Huawai for the effort they put into a very close to perfect fit & finish better that I've seen on any production sword in that price point...be well and thank you👊👊👊

its more of an extra shim, maybe because the wood was cut a tad too short, or it acts as a shock absorber for the wood core, not sure what the intended purpose was. This is a truly stunning sword, but I think some points are not valid. Esp. regarding the elaboration on the tang: 1) the bo-hi being shorter has the advantage that dirt is less likely to get under the habaki 2) shorter bo-hi is more work since they need to make a more perfect end-point; the bo-hi is machine polished. Therefore it was little additional effort to grind it in after filing the tang 3) the "pride" is in the blade. finishing the tang is a lot easier than polishing the blade to this finish and bringing the hamon out 4) the tang is meant to be rust, normally nihontos are held with the bare hand at the tang which builds patina and allow to date it even centuries later - is different for museum pieces. - In any way great and very beautiful sword!

I've seen lots of Nihonto where the bo-hi started at the habaki and even an inch or so in front of the habaki. It all depends on the Smith and or the customer or how the Ryuha prefers it.
@JoeSteel1
@JoeSteel1 2 года назад
I've researched examples and soken to some people who know alot more than I do, and that is a preferred method to execute the Bo-Hi when the swordsman needs the optimal balance especially on a heavier Dotanuki blade, whatever it is I do prefer it if its proper or not, its an appreciated aspect to the bare blade, and I do feel the sword distributed much better, it's like a heavy cutter that is light in the hands feel. The only thing I fear is water travel down past the habaki so I m sure I will disassemble after any water bottle cuts to clean it
@Katana-Karl
@Katana-Karl 2 года назад
@@JoeSteel1 oh yeah I forgot this is a Dotunuki (torso cutter) katana. Sorry bout that. My bad. 🙄 please excuse my absent mindedness. So yeah, with a heavier/thicker blade like this the bo-hi into the nakago is definitely the way to go to make the katana more balanced.
@Katana-Karl

@@JoeSteel1 Dōtanuki is a Japanese swordsmithing school developed in the Higo province of Kyūshū during the Kamakura period. The Japanese kanji for dōtanuki translates to, sword that cuts through torsos. While samurai routinely tested their blades on the bodies of convicted criminals to judge their cutting ability, dōtanuki blades were renowned for cutting through the bodies of armored opponents. The thick wide body blades were forged in both bohi (with groove) and no hi (without groove) styles, although the solid no hi blades were by far the most common. The dōtanuki's thickness and durability helped them obtain their vicious reputation during the Japanese conquest of Korea where they were heavily used by daimyō Katō Kiyomasa's personal samurai. Their popularity peaked during the Azuchi-Momoyama (1568-1600) period, and began to fade rapidly thereafter as Japan entered a period of relative peace and stability. The dōtanuki style was all but forgotten until Japanese manga writer Kazuo Koike reintroduced it the famous 70's magna series Lone Wolf and Cub. The ronin Ogami Ittō uses a dōtanuki blade in his quest for revenge on the Yagyū clan.

Two mekugi are not always a sign of a low quality fitting. I have a two citadel katana. Both have perfect handles, probably better than the Huawei seen here. They use two pegs... mostly a safety thing I think.
@JoeSteel1
@JoeSteel1 Год назад
That's not what I was implementing, one peg is a very traditional design that was dominant on ancient swords that I appreciate seeing...When the tsuka is drilled with one hole, it also forces the smith to do extra work in balancing the nakago to fit the tsuka making for a great quality fit...you can make the argument that 2 pegs is safer, which in many cases it can be...there are many Huawei models that do have 2 pegs...and I will never argue the quality of citadel as they are on a different level in quality and price.....the bottom line is for what this sword is priced at you are getting truely wonderful craftsmanship.

The tang of the blade. Do you guys think it's a long lasting thing and won't loose itself over time? I heard that tang on blade is always not a good thing. I really would like to get this sword for iaito practice.

@JoeSteel1 10 месяцев назад
I'm sorry not clear as to what your asking, do you mean the nakago on a Japanese sword? Not sure why your asking if it is not a good thing, maybe there is some miscommunication here...but the sword would not be a good iaito sword as its Dotanuki and on the heavier side but still balanced well, you will need a light and nimble sword and also not a sharpened live blade

@@JoeSteel1 Thank for your replay. I meant that the blade is darker than usual clear metal. How much is weight of this sword? I think you are right that it is heavy for iaito. Do you have any recommendation for the swords for iaito with the same quality and look as this one in your video? I would appreciate it. And also it looks like all huawei swords are now out of stock and waiting list is months long... By the way, we use real sharp swords in our iaito Katori Shinto Ryu practice.

@JoeSteel1
@JoeSteel1 Год назад
Thats a long answer friend, while they are all sword retailers there are differences in services and options Hanwei is one the longest running that offers mostly stocked swords that can be ready to ship in many different price points and also offer euros, starter swords to expensive , generally good fit and finish and they make some must own classics like the practical XL a robust hard cutter Huawei produces high-quality for those who want some of the best made swords on the production market at a generally fair price, they also have been known to have a long wait up to a year. Jkoo offers custom build options where you can choose parts to create your own sword, they can either deliver a very good sword or have flaws. still one of the best in options and overall quality. It all depends on what you want and why you want it and what budget you have...so much more to discuss but that's the best answer I can give you here..thanks for watching

@JoeSteel1
@JoeSteel1 Год назад
T10 is very good durable steel for katana and cutting, although new popular steels out there like L6, S5, S7 are steps above...but at the end of the day the steel is never as important as the skill of the smith, Forge that heat treated it correctly...yes this sword is T10, Dotanuki which is a very rigid geometric for durability

@JoeSteel1
@JoeSteel1 Год назад
Thank you for your comments, but having everything positive compared to the level of craftsmanship on Huawai pieces is a different premise and that is what is paid for. You need to look with different eyes to see the amount of detail and work that is performed, these swords are on a different level. Now if that is worth one spending the extra money is an individual thing. As far as the full wrap, there are many historical examples of well made panel wraps with the expert wood cut outs as thet have done so well. The work on this and the nakago alone is on a different level from less expensive katana. There is a difference from satisfactory and exceptional, again if that is worth it is up to the buyer, Huawai is one of the finest katana makers in their price Point.
