Hey Y'all! We are Justin and Lil plus four kids and one on the way! Just over a year ago we moved our RV to 18 acres of raw land, built a solar power system and now we are building our dream house (by hand), together as a family, completely off the grid and debt free (no mortgage).

In this video:
After months of work, we finally completed our Pier and Beam foundation, so now it's time for us to move on to the floor framing.
The floor will be 28' x 54', which makes the house just over 1500 square feet.
The whole family was sick with the flu over the Christmas and New Year Holidays, so it has taken us a few weeks of recovering to finally get started on the floor framing.
We fired up our trusty tractor again to help us transport the floor joists closer to the house, but first we made a pit stop to pump up a flat tire using Justin's heavy-duty off-road tire inflation pump.
The joists are 2"x12"x16' long. They are very heavy and unwieldy to move.
Once we got the joists situated, we setup our portable dewalt 12" rolling miter saw station for cutting joists and blocking to size. Lilly took the first shift on the saw while Justin located and set the first two joists in place.
Justin had lots of trouble with the Dewalt 20V Max 30 degree framing nailer. It kept misfiring and getting stuck for no apparent reason, but he refuses to use other brands and thinks he can finesse it to work better.
Lil does an awesome job manning the Miter Saw and soon has a huge stack of blocking prepared for installation.

As an engineer, I appreciate the accuracy you are attempting to achieve. However, in construction, your lumber will never be perfect. 1/4" - 1/2" tolerances are acceptable. You could use laser level and hand plane to knock down any major peeks. I believe the plywood floor will equalize. Just a thought.

PT uses Southern Yellow Pine a lot and it is very hard. Pre-drilling helps. A pneumatic gun is better for that application. Every tool has it's limits. I heard Milwakee makes a more reliable cordless nail gun. When pulling nails using a block helps to get more leverage. Also turning the hammer sideways will give you more leverage too. Pros who use wooden handle hammers know to only use the hammer sideways or you can easily break the shaft.

To save time, next time don't cut the joists until they're in position. Chalk line the top of the joists on the outside at the right length. Then use a speed square and circular saw to cut the ends off.

Maybe pull some string lines off the batter boards to line up the joist ends and pull diagonals with 100 foot tapes to verify all is square. Getting things lined up first will help out a lot. Double joists on ends and wherever interior walls will land is recommended. Air powered nail guns are rapid performers. Keep helpers away when shooting nails, wood can split and nail will angle off into someone.

Buy a Milwaukee nail gun. Much much better and no warm up period when using it. Trust me one Army retired vet to a Navy vet. Where are you building anyway. Make sure you crown theses joists, crown up. Run a sting down the line first to last so you can quickly get the joists close, cut the excess off later if needed.

Haha, I've used dewalt for so many years and it has never failed me...but these 30 degree dewalt framing nailer are terrible...it does have a multi nail mode which I figured out after this video that allows me to shoot continuously. We are in Southeast Georgia. Definitely, good call on the crown up. I don't want those joists sagging.

Your tractor has a Skid Steer Quick Attach, SSQA. Anything made for skid steers will fit. My John Deere has Deere's quick attach fittings, completely different. I do not plan on getting any other attachments but I did get bolt on forks for my bucket for light lifting. You have an entire house to build, get a pneumatic framing nailer. Don't use extension cords, just more hoses. With cords you lose voltage, with extra hoses you gain air storage.
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for clarifying the difference 👍 I don't like the idea of bolt on forks, so I opted for the heavy duty pallet forks. So far so good and I'm happy with it. I don't like having hoses in my way either, so unless these battery powered nailers completely break down I plan to tough it out with them. They will definitely be put to the test 😄

The adjustable support on the right of the saw can also be used as a stop. Especially handy for repetitious cuts where all need to be the same. Simple, fast and accurate and your tape or first cut can be used for set up.

If your main floor carrying beams are level just run the floor joists with the crowning up on them ,ever thing should follow. Your over thinking their levelness ,also snap a chalkline on them and cut them to the proper lengths when you have them all in place. Good luck.

You need to put up your joist 1 end first. then install the other end 2nd. This way you can square up your floor joist to get a square floor frame. Once you get the floor frame square then pull a string line from one end to the other and start putting the rest of your floor joist in. Once all your joist are installed go to the other side and snap a line so you can cut all the joist ends to line up even. I noticed your joist have a arrow pointing down, usually it should be pointing up indicating that is the crown side. Your doing a good job !
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE 7 месяцев назад
Thanks, all good feedback! I tried a different method by using my laser level and Marking a straight line across the beams and a center reference line perpendicular to that line. I guess we will see how that works out 😄

I really can’t stand Dewalt anymore. I have bought a ton of their crap and will not do it anymore. Their quality has went downhill for years now. Don’t forget guys rough framing isn’t precise and has a lot of forgiveness. I am so happy to see you guys back and feeling better. I can’t hardly wait for the next video. There is a channel I follow and you guys are about neck to neck on your builds it’s Norhtoalaska2022. You guys have probably seen them. I bought tire spoons and a bead breaker years ago, I definitely don’t pay to have my tires fixed anymore on my equipment. Amazon is a good place to buy that stuff like patches, tire spoon and a bead breaker. Thank you guys for posting a new video and letting us follow along with your journey. Stay strong and hurry up and post more videos 😊.

Oh no, not the Dewalt 😄 I've always had great luck with dewalt tools up until these framing nailers. They are very finicky... Awesome to hear you take care of business yourself with the tires! It sure is not as easy as people make it look on YT haha and getting the tire to inflate is something else...the first time I ever replaced a tire and realized the new tire isn't tight enough against the rim to inflate...uhhh ran to YT and saw crazy people using starter fluid and igniting their tires to pop the bead into place....well of course you know I had to try it and sure enough it worked 😆 Glad y'all are joining us for the journey!

@@DIY_or_DIE I would love to help with your build. I wish I was closer. Framing is the fun part of the build. It will be interesting to see how it all comes together. Are you building a single floor home? Also what kind of pitch are you using on your roof? Are you guys heating with wood,gas or electric? I know you wanted to stay off the grid. Have you looked into wood boilers? What kind of insulation are you planning on installing? Anyhow you guys still have a ton of work in front of you. Be careful and can’t wait for more videos.

From other vids, if it helps, you should turn the crown (bend of wood) of the joist upwards across the span and it will flatten down as you add weight (flooring and wall etc). Maybe you have the bend sagging downwards? On the other hand - never seen anyone worry about the small difference you're showing - they just slap down the flooring. From my experience, with this kind of lumber (as apposed to manufactured I-Beam joists or LVL) slight 'out of square' wood is just part of building? Trent & Allie call is 'hare out of square' and their home looks just fine. In any case, you're work is looking pretty fine to this armchair quarterback :)
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE 7 месяцев назад
Haha, thanks for the good laugh 😃 I certainly intend to "slap down the flooring" once we finish up with these joists! I like "hair out of square" too lol but we have to be picky enough that we end up with that instead of something worse like "finger or toe out of square" instead of a hair 😆

I have a pancake compressor but wasn't sure if it could handle a framing nailer. Also, I just hate having cords laying around and I already have the batteries so figured I might as well give the 20V max nailer a try. Supposedly the 21 degree framing nailer is a lot less finicky
