Rings of Power was far from good, but despite that, I found something appealing in it. Let's explore why.

Just an additional thought: One of the common criticisms from folks in the subjectivity camp regarding a lot of RU-vid film critics is "Why do you have to be so negative?" And, ironically, it's very much a case of toxic positivity. We're expected to just sweep our complaints under the rug (even though sharing criticisms/complaints has proven to be highly cathartic in a lot of cases) and act like everything is perfect, when it's not. So here's a challenge for those of you in the subjectivity camp: If you're really interested in pursuing something more positive and unifying, then join us in exploring what these failed stories could and *should* have been! Give more love to fan rewrites! While we may never be able to agree on the original works or what standards should be applied to them, we can still come to understand and appreciate our shared love of these franchises (Star Wars, Marvel, etc) through sharing in something new, something we as fans created.

I suppose the problem I have is the thousands of youtube videos saying Ring of Power was woke and bad long before the show was even out. Did the show ever have a chance ? You can also not compare Rings of Power to LOTRO since that is basically verbatim the words of Tolkien while Rings of Power has none of that help.
@imyouralibi6208
@imyouralibi6208 2 месяца назад
@@logirex I also had a problem with that, tbh. To an extent, you can tell a lot about a series or film by its trailers, but I think someone interested in criticizing the story as a whole should be aware of that story in its entirety. And I will never consider "it's woke" to be a valid criticism. Especially since I feel most people who use the phrase don't even know what it really means. Anyway, Rings of Power managed to get a second season, so I don't think it's doing too badly for itself.

@@logirexIs it really any different than people calling things problematic before it's out? There will always be jackals waiting to jump on something. Of course it had a chance to be good and to prove these people wrong, it failed to do that, tho. When a trailer doesn't give you confidence in a show, and then the show confirms your feelings about the trailer by being a bad show, then it's hard to argue that everyone was just hating for the sake of hating. There are shows that pretty much everyone universally liked, Andor for example, and others that are mixed amongst the "everything is woke trash" group like Fallout. The writing in Andor was superb, as was basically everything else, except maybe some pacing issues, and voila, everyone loved it. Why wouldn't people hate Andor like they do the rest of the Star Wars shows? What makes Andor any different?

The "subjectivity camp" is just narcissism masquerading as virtue. These people need to pretend they're better than they are and they'll hate everyone who shatters their illusions.

"I left the server when I realized people were generally reluctant to acknowledge bad writing" - I swear, the Star Wars fan-fic community is exactly like this. Only positive comments are wanted on AO3 and people are SO sensitive about beta-reading and the like. I'm a bad writer right now, but at least I can actually take criticism, so I'm always getting better, unlike those people. I hope to be a properly good writer one day.

As a Star Wars fanfic writer on ao3, I hope I never come across like this. I want to get as good at writing as I can. I want criticism, even if it hurts. I don’t ever want to get to a point where I believe I’m the best I’ll ever be

This was a really thoughtful video. And I have equally struggled with being told I can’t make any sort of criticism on a story, just because they say “it’s all subjective”. I do understand that preference is subjective, that’s why people tend to enjoy different types of genres, character types, etc. It is the way people connect to stories. But the existence of subjective preference does not mean there are no rules for what makes something good or not so good. And bad writing certainly does have a place in the world, to learn from mistakes. In order to make something better based of what you did enjoy, and improve on the mistakes from the past. That is pretty much the rule I follow when I am starting to make my own stories. There is value in both subjective preference and the objective rules of what makes a story good. But to completely ignore existing issues in writing is not really the best way to go.

Yeah I usually judge things on “what is it trying to do?” and then “does it succeed at that?” That’s something Roger Ebert always did, and he ended up giving positive reviews to some things that people are often baffled by (like those live action Garfield movies from the 2000’s), since he tried looking at the intended audience and judge based on whether that audience would like it. That’s what separates “good, but not for me” and “bad”.

The best advice I ever found was when I was in the middle of writer's block. I was scouring the internet for inspiration and I found a blog that said when you hit a creative block, just let yourself create bad art. Yes, you know it's bad and other people know it's bad, but that's the point. It's a phase of growth and eventually, you'll be able to make good art again. You also can learn from other people's phases of bad art and it's nice to know you're not the only one struggling. A great example of subjectivity vs objectivity is Tolkein and Herbert. Tolkein subjectively didn't enjoy Herbert's Dune books, but Tokein did objectively acknowledge that Herbert was a skilled writer.

For me I watch a movie or a show if I like it I like it no matter what others think I pride myself on being a prequel defender from the start and not having jumped on the bandwagon if it’s people who think Clone Wars saved 🙄 it or because they hate the sequels I have loved them from when I first saw them another example is Doctor Who to this day it’s my favourite show of all time my favourite Doctor is David Tennant and my least favourite is Matt Smith I don’t agree pretty much everything that certain people on the internet say about it am I still love the show If I like a show or movie I will like it no matter what others think or even if it’s the majority and the same goes for movies and shows I hate just an example I personally hate the last 2 scream movies even though the majority of people like them

There is such a thing as guilty pleasure. The Clone Wars is badly written, true, but it is highly enjoyable nonetheless. In an audiovisual medium, writing is just one piece of the puzzle, and writing itself can be further divided into multiple parts. Clone Wars has interesting themes, amazing worldbuilding and even though they're often badly written, lovable characters. It is quite common for tv shows and movies to have both failed and successful aspects, rather than just being a binary between good and bad, they're a massive set of countless binaries. There's a lot of good in the Clone Wars, but there's a lot of bad in it too. We are allowed to enjoy junk shows just like we're allowed to enjoy junk food. Doesn't mean it's good for you though.
@imyouralibi6208
@imyouralibi6208 2 месяца назад
Oh yeah, I certainly have my own share of guilty pleasure stories that I enjoy. And while I agree that The Clone Wars has plenty of lovable characters, I *strongly* disagree that it has good worldbuilding or themes. Those aspects of the show are genuinely terrible. Overall, there is very little good in The Clone Wars compared to the bad. I certainly wouldn't label it as a guilty pleasure for myself since I don't even find much subjective enjoyment in it anymore.

@@imyouralibi6208 I don't know, the gradual militarization and corruption of the republic, the legitimate issues of the separatists, the slow erosion of the Jedi's identity and influence and the subtle and the not-so subtle military adaptation of the two opposing forces as the conflict drags on are all examples of pretty strong world building. They're great themes too. Add to that all the strong character arcs and the way the mood of the show carefully follows those themes to deliver a really powerful experience. The problems of the series come with the details and execution, having way too much silly nonsense like the zillo beast and whatnot, but to say that there's very little good in the Clone Wars is just disingenuous. I understand where you're coming from though, having loved something and seeing its flaws the first time adds that little bit of shame that strengthens the rejection you have. I've seen it many times as people reach adulthood and reject their childhood ideas in. Remember that at its core, Clone Wars is a kids' show, and should be judged as such. It manages to impart some pretty profound insights into some pretty mature themes in a way that is accessible and understandable to children, which really is no mean feat. It's good to see the problems of the show, but not being able to see the areas where the show really shines is a damn shame.
@imyouralibi6208
@imyouralibi6208 2 месяца назад
@@khatack I'm sorry, but all the worldbuilding/themes and strong characters arcs you are referring to never actually happened in the series. I think you may want to revisit the series. A large number of people have proven to have faulty recollections of the series due to not having seen it in a long time and/or viewing it through a nostalgic lens. Not to mention the plethora of headcanon TCW fans have invented to fill in the major gaps that exist in the series. My sister and I have been more than happy to point out good writing wherever we've seen it. But most of the time, it's just not there. If you're interested, I'd recommend checking out our reaction series to The Clone Wars. The editing and commentary wasn't the best in the beginning and it is naturally quite lengthy, so I'd suggest perhaps picking out one of your favorite arcs in the series and watching our commentary on those episodes. The series breaks down on almost every level when viewed through a critical lens, and we demonstrate as much in our reactions, especially starting from Season 4 and onward when we really hit our stride.

Sometimes, “bad” writing adds to the charm, like the memes for the Star Wars prequels. I also actually enjoy the Tom Hardy Venom movies for being willing to embrace the Dark Age of Comics edge as well, with the same stupid dialogue. But it very much depends on the work. Something that’s supposed to be more highbrow, like Tolkien, having bad dialogue like Rings of Power is a big problem.

Usually I enjoy an strong female characters with their own legacy Like Sarah, Ripley ecet basically female characters wrote by men. To change establish male character with female ones just because majority female writers are not capable to write about anything else other than them self will never convince me.

"establish male character with female ones" I'm not sure what you're referring to here, since as far as I know, none of the stories I mentioned replace originally male characters with female ones... Personally, I don't mind gender-swapping characters as long the change makes sense and is handled well. "majority female writers are not capable to write about anything else" I feel like this an unfair assessment. The entertainment industry is still mostly dominated by men. And it's men who wrote stories like the Star Wars sequels, which feature a Mary Sue, or the AHSOKA series, which features an all-female cast (who are mostly Mary Sues, lmao). Rings of Power was also written by men. So it's not women who should be blamed for stories like these.
