These people don't see games as art, they see them as assets. They only perceive these projects and the people working on them as numbers on a spread sheet that are supposed to behave in very specific ways. "If we increase x, y will also go up."

It's actually an easy explanation. The companies are ran by investors who don't play video games, and thus do not understand what their target audience even expects from a video game in general. Most of them probably havent touched a video game since Pac-Man hit the scene in arcades, so how could they? And the people developing these games are no longer a bunch of sweaty nerds who love gaming, because of diversity and nepo hiring practices, it's often a group of out of touch people who outwardly despise daming culture, so what you end up with is a product that is made for nobody. 🤷‍♂️ Add in a little dei administration who don't care about the end product, and an accounting team who aren't watching the budget and you BOOM you get Concord.

@@Xero_Kaiser Yeah, your new game has to be REALLY good or have a cool gimmick that keeps people around, your going against games with literally *years* of new and added content. So you have to have a killer launch to keep people around.

Say that to Marvel Rivals, 1 million wishlists and counting (that was months ago, maybe it's 1.5 million at this point). "Hero shooter" is a vague theme, when talking about Overwatch, that is the Team Fortress formula... there's only three games out there, Team Fortress itself (who is still "alive" somehow), Overwatch "2" and Paladins (who looks so cheap, like single A). Marvel Rivals is the first legit Team Fortress ever since 2017ish, meanwhile we had other games mixing "hero shooter" with other stuff, Valorant for example, it's nothing more than ugly Counter Strike with cooldown abilities (super powers)

@@Xero_Kaiser I think BRs are different because they're approachable in a different way, you can play solo and have a potential shot at getting far in a match even if you're new to the game mechanics, because there's more to the game than just grinding mechanics and gamesense and knowledge of ability matchups. Like, you could easily imagine a blend between PUBG and Tarkov, built on the Unreal 5 engine, take off. Of course it wouldn't dethrone a game like Fortnite or PUBG overnight, but it could definitely garner traction because these games aren't as hardcore as mobas and hero shooters are. People who grind League, or Overwatch, they've had to pour 100s of hours into the game just to get past the initial skill curve and actually begin to understand the game's fundamentals. BRs are much more approachable.

Honestly the main issue with that show was the actor for chief. He just had an agenda he wanted to push and had no respect for the source material what so ever. Now Fallout getting all those nominations is... questionable.

@@notrenbanney2450 I was one of the 1% of people it seems, who actually liked the halo series. I liked it way more than the emotionless master chief that says 3 words in the entire campaign. All the halo games basically had absolutely zero story and it was boring as hell. I loved the series for being actually entertaining. I personally think that this is a good example for "you don't have always to follow the origin material"

@@Novskyy621 You're entitled to your own opinion but yeah you're part of the vast minority, most people thought the show was trash. And I'm sorry but saying the games didn't have any story is objectively wrong. After 3:43 took over it wasn't as good but the story was very good and that is a pretty well-known fact. It's okay to have a quiet protagonist, especially in a video game. They could have adjusted it a little bit for the TV show but instead they made him an entirely different person.

DE shut down their publishing division around the time they changed management, that probably had something to do other than the performance of the game

That to me smells like made up bullshit to defend DE. Airship Syndicate themselves said in this very channel during an interview that DE didn't tell them anything and they found out that DE closed their publishing label because they were getting kicked out of their mutual Slack. No heads up, no mutual accord, just ran and left them to fend for themselves, which is why they had to do that risky move because they didn't have the infrastructure to pull an MMO-Lite.

@@jorgeporras9262 are you referring to the Asmongold interview? I found the refund situation to be very questionable considering Steam and Sony honored refunds. It seems to be that Airship refused to give out refunds and kept the game on sale for early access for some reason. At least, this is what was stated from community managers for Wayfinder over discord. Don't take everything from an impromptu Asmongold interview as the whole story. It's also very easy to blame the publisher in their position, especially with all the demonizing that happens these days considering how common it is for publishers to mistreat their studios (heck, Humble Games just went through massive layoffs yesterday and is seeking closure most likely). I would exercise caution on considering one side to be completely in the right or at fault, as a lot of this is messy and we won't understand the full situation until a journalist digs deeper into it. There's a plethora of stories from early testers that had warned the Wayfinder devs about server problems and game breaking bugs, but they were ignored.

In the end of the day, they're professionals, perhaps either of them are throwing blame and making a huge deal is that they both made missteps.

Yeah nah. They rolled with that to stop the discussion. This was full DE meddle, they always fkup, but it's NEVER DE's fault. The game wasn't even a live service always online thing originally, but DE only knows Warframe and it's whales, they don't know how to make anything else work.

This is one area where Warner Bros were actually smart. The cat woman movie was just not panning out and they couldnt get a cut together that was entertaining, reshoots script rewrites made the whole thing way too costly. So they just canned it before going any further. A wise move rather than ruining the names of everyone who worked on it.

Genre is fine. OW is doing fine, Marvel's Rivals beta is doing 50 times better than concord. Edit: LuL he said these things in the video too.

Might be a bubble of sorts - I have never heard of marvel rivals outside of this video but I saw plenty of buzz about concord (good and bad) over the last few weeks.

Concord had a beta? thought they were like holding an alpha for reviewers or something

It’s that really suprising? It’s Marvel; which is an established brand vs a new ip from a new unknown and unproven studio. Ain’t nothing surprising about that.

Even Marvel Rivals isn't doing very good. Peaked at 52k players on Steam yesterday when the new beta went live and is now already struggling to average even 1/3rd that number despite them now giving out more keys through Twitch drops. Overwatch has more than twice the players on Steam right now even though most of its PC players play through Bnet.

That's a part of what kept me from trying it, why bother if this game costs 40€ and might get Battleborned by the Marvel game? In the end I ended up playing a few hours of OW2 instead and got my hero shooter fill lol. Congratulations Concord, you got me to try a game I haven't played since "release"!

I think that was a failure in articulating the notion of how much prominence Sony has given it in presentations, despite being either basically nothing or deeply uninteresting.

People cared I think. I wouldn't call it hype though. But I'm just puzzled why these games just launch (or hold a beta) without the fundamental systems to make matches work. At this point I'm convinced that having matches actually work is more important than good gameplay for a game to be and stay a success. Tekken 8 - people can just plug when they're losing. This was an issue in Tekken 7 for a decade. And then they go and release Tekken 8 without ANY systems in place to punish plugging, essentially making ranked matches pointless. HOW? Counter Strike 2 - CS:GO was working, everyone was content with it, it was making money. The big problem was cheating. What did Valve (of all companies) release? A mess of a game with a fraction of CS:GO content and cheaters rampant AND you couldn't play casual games on your own server with friends. Absolutely mesmerizing, how dumb this launch was. And so many competitive games do this. They absolutely drop the ball on the part, where people are brought together and play fairly with each other. It's just so infuriating. Who decided "This isn't important."? Did they ever get fired?

The Guardians game was decent enough, but it failed commercially

That would be great news actually. I know this can sound negative for some, but sometimes people get fired for valid reasons, pure and simple ineptitude. And honestly, hard to imagine any other development team more inept than... I believe the name is "team 4", the remaining Overwatch devs who transitioned to this "sequel", these people for sure deserves to be axed. The ones working with the aesthetics, like the reskins, the visuals of the new characters and maps, most of them are performing a decent job. But the director alongside everybody working on the gameplay and balancing, they all should be fired. And by the way, these "100 million players" can't be audited by external sources, it's just Blizzard claiming a random number for marketing reasons, meanwhile if you look at the open charts and views on youtube + twitch, if Overwatch has like 1 million players on all platforms (and half of that number are actually active), that is already a stretch

But that's what they are, yes, the Infested equivalent, which is also bringing new Railjack content as well. And the band's single is a massive earworm. The boy band enemies/Aka infested liches arent "bosses" per-se, special encounter yes but they are closer to elite enemies than bosses.

So many more things at play here than "we never need another hero shooter again cause we have overwatch and valorant". Rivals will probably survive while Concord will probably fail, despite both being hero sjooters5

@@jesse1086 Its numbers are barely okay for the amount of money invested. Investors have crazy expectations nowadays: even if it makes money it can get killed because something else can make more money.

I may be on the sauce but I honestly don't see Marvel Rivals taking THAT much away from OW. The fact that it's 3rd person alone separates it from Overwatch's style of gameplay, plus imo it's gonna be even harder to balance competitively, and that's saying a lot. Obviously it's gonna do well, but it's more of a Smite killer if anything.

battleborn was the superior game. just blizzard had more money to spend on marketing and wotnot for overwatch. battleborn messed up with the launchdate too.

@@pifeg Overwatch has not had a positive reception so salty players(I mean me) will definitely try Marvel Rivals. The game looks fun and has a very nice look and the characters designs are much better than Concord

@@pifeg I think it highly depends of how fast and reactive the dev teams are, it will become a literal race between Overwatch and Rivals. However is showing more support and balanced/fun gameplay, they will snatch players left and right. I can see Rivals overwhelming Overwatch for a couple of reasons, the game was made on Unreal 5, so they will polish the game for all current consoles (and the Switch 2) without any kind of limitation (Overwatch is limited by a old engine, they openly admitted that). Marvel has a infinite roster of characters, depending on the workforce they can deliver new characters every month, meanwhile Overwatch has to create derivative "Pixar-like" characters from zero. And lastly, the Overwatch devs already showed glaring weaknesses regarding gameplay balance and reaction time, so who knows if the NetEase devs will act the same or be responsive... if this was a horse race, I would honestly bet on Rivals
