It's Turkey Lurkey Time

Just what the world wanted for Christmas 2009--a marginally better RU-vid version of the original Broadway cast of "Promises, Promises" doing "Turkey Lurkey Time." Don't try this at home, especially the Donna McKechnie head pops. But don't let the lousy song throw you; stick it out for the dancing.

The level of dancing here is superlative, and Donna McKechnie's performance defines greatness. It's not JUST that her execution of this torrent of movement is better than anyone else's, it's the style, ease, flexibility and CHARACTER of every move that is astonishing. It must be hard enough to execute this choreography, but to make it look authoritative and natural at the same time is genius.

Out of the hundreds of times I've watched this video, I don't think I've ever commented! Legendary and iconic performance, I'm surprised this performance never made it to the Broadway's Lost Treasures series. Of course, Donna McKechnie is superb, but no one ever comments on Baayork Lee's infectious personality in this number. She is a little spitfire and gives hope to us shorter dancers (even male ones too, like myself!) that we can be featured right up there, too!

Many thanks for putting this up! Marginally better is significantly better than the original. And what a number! True musical theatre bliss!

It just gets better and better. As good as the video is of the replacement cast, this is so much more exciting. One reason is that the chorus dancers are doing more in the background, ramping up the excitement, especially Betsy Haug, in the green plaid skirt on the center desk, who was the dance captain of the production and went on to stage the London and other foreign productions. She may still have the original "Bible" of the choreography and staging.

I love the orchestration so much. I cannot get enough of Baayork. I love that brunette on the center desk going nuts with her hair. And I love the insane visual presentation Bennett gives (the guys moves are really complimentary to the women). I want to transport back in time and be in this production!!!

Just by a fluke A friend and I went into the city when we were in college to see this play - we went back 7 times to see it - the orchestration of this is amazing as was the dancing at every performance i went to even before the dancing had stopped the audience was on its feet applauding and screaming like maniacs ! it was a thrill to see this and the entire play - I saw the revival it was ok but couldnt compare to this - DPK

If you'd ever seen "The Apartment," the classic movie this show is based on, you'd know that the wild Xmas party is important. That's the scene where the drunken secretary, Edie Adams, tells Shirley Maclaine, the elevator girl, about their boss's long history of cheating. The office party in the movie is just as over-the-top, with hundreds of extras including Ray Walston and a chorusline of secretaries doing the can-can. Turkey Lurkey Time is the Broadway version of that very memorable scene.

The woman dancing on the desk in the center (long brown hair, plaid skirt and vest) is Tony Award Winning Carole (Kelly) Bishop. She was the original Sheila in "A Chorus Line", and if nothing else, most people remember her as the mom in Dirty Dancing.

Yes, thank you for this upload. I was going blind with the other one. And it's not Bacharach/David's greatest song, but remember this was the 60's, and this was "the big dance number". AND it tears the roof off!

this is so much better then the dumbed down version that we have today. that was true broadway back then. but now it seems people are so stiff about the smallest stuff . ugh. could broadway ever return to how it use to be.

Watched this loads of times. It's amazing! By 1968 weren't people in flared trousers? Also, isn't Donna McKecknie gorgeous? She has such a pretty face and a great figure AND all that talent!

bell bottoms were considered fringe element and hippie in the 60's--it wasn't until the early seventies that they started making it into mainstream clothing. And yes, McKechnie is a goddess.

Thanks a lot for the significantly marginally better pic - and hey, the sound is FANTASTICALLY better!! (BTW The video in the background of the Seth Rudetsky presentation of this seems very good - why hasn't anyone released it officially on one of those Lost Broadway editions?) I am VERY obsessed with this number, after only hearing it for 35 years. Lo, the scales were lifted from mine eyes!!

Which version do you like better? I love both versions but i lean towards the 1968 version due to it being over energetic and done in 1 take compared to where the movie version could of been filmed over days or weeks.

As Michael Bennett originally choreographed this, the dancers were supposed to perform like minimally practiced, intoxicated office workers would. The number died. This rendition stopped the show.

Hey, this ISN'T Bob Fosse's work -as noted below. It's MICHAEL BENNETT - six years before CHORUS LINE. This terrific show got an indifferent revival on B'way in 1010, though Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenowith were good.

I agree, this is a terrible song and although I haven't seen the show, I can't imagine it's all that well integrated. It strikes me as a "and now we're gonna sing and dance" type number rather than emerging from the characters or situations. But Donna McKechnie really is something else. God forgot to give her connective tissue!
