It's Twins: Parenting from a Wheelchair 

I was in a car accident when I was 17 my spinal cord was completely severed, at 19 I had my first and only child, now I'm a proud 55yr old Mother and grandmother of 3 I've been so blessed and continue to be blessed.

I love how the dude went from buzzed and clean cut to straight up nomad. lol :P

I understand the concern for the baby necks but also recognize and validate what an exceptionally strong woman who has worked hard to compensate for her disability. She's an inspiration!

As a woman in a wheelchair, I have wondered about becoming a mother and how I would be able to navigate through it. Thank you for this piece. I just really wish people would not be so critical of her as she is a new mother of twins and that is a lot for an able bodied individual so I xan only imagine how difficult it is for her. Give her a break... She is just figuring things out and what works best for her and her babies. Stop trying to impress your personal experience as a parent without disabilities onto a person with disabilities. The situation is never going to be the same in how you will be able to execute every-day task. It's hard enough being a person with disabilities in a world where people look down on you figuratively and literally; but to be criticized for just trying to live...this piece was meant to be inspirational. It gave me hope that even though I am disabled, I too, can become a mother and it will be OK. But it also showed me that no matter how good your intentions are there will always be people judging and criticizing your every move. But thank you, Attitude, for the video!!!

I would love to see an update later in their life just to see how the family is doing

This is fantastic. I am a paraplegic mother too and yes it is very challenging doing everything seated but it is worth it. keep up the good work wheelchair moms and everybody else...

I was born with spina bifida so I have been disabled my whole life, but the one thing I was always sure of was that I wanted a family. I only had one, but she was born with ADHD, so that is kind of like having two because Payton climbed the walls, almost literally 24/7. My husband decided he had had enough after two years, so I became a single Parent. This brings back so very many memories! My daughter will be 21 next month, so we made it even with all the ups and downs, and I would not do one thing any different. My daughter is my angel from heaven and a complete blessing. It was not easy, but it was so worth it! Those who are criticizing the way she picks them up. Piss me off! Babies are NOT as fragile as one might think. How dare you criticize her! She is doing a job that 99.9 percent of people would not even have the balls to try to do. She loves her babies and nothing else she can give them is more important then that. My daughter is 20 years old and I feel quite sure that she would tell you that she feels blessed to have the Mother she had. I can also promise you that she is more compassionate and caring then anyone who would bitch about their heads bobbing a little. DO NOT CAST STONES UNLESS YOU HAVE LIVED IN THAT GLASS HOUSE. I HAVE LIVED IN IT and we have enough issues to deal with without having to deal with hate from the internet by people who do not even know us.

what a awesome family I'm glad I can watch their story. I had a full knee replacement what was down to cancer at the age of 19. now 4 years on I'm still cancer free.

In 2004, I ended up paralyzed from the waist down due to a spinal cord injury... 5 months ago I had a catastrophic accident in my dodge ram truck. I also broke back in 2 places. 4th and 5th vert. brain bleed 9 day's. nose broken 2 places. chin 2 places. .lower jaw.. upper jaw no longer attached to skull. and skull broken in 3 places and right eye was torn open so bad that they had to use crazy glue to close it . unconscious 2.5 days then 3 days l8r in hospital I lost 40% of my blood internally and needed emergency blood transfusion. . and I've got not a mark or serious damage whatsoever. . nothing like this poor girl. watching stories like this really opens my eyes about everyone always telling me that I'm lucky to be alive. . but I'm always thinking how damn lucky I am. yes I need a chair after 15 mins on my feet. but hopefully that'll change once my back finally heals. .. Its hard for us paraplegics to have balance in their hip area so we have to hang on to something with one hand and then use the other hand to hold something and we know what we're doing I've been like this for almost eight years and I got a 18 month old

For all those saying she needs to support their heads she says at one point they can support their own heads. Babies are stronger then you think. She's an intelligent and loving mother she knows what she's doing.

WOW!! JUST WOW!!!! You just make me feel soooo good seeing u with ur babies!..... I woke up paralyzed from surgery 6 years ago..T- 6, but at that time I had a 12 year old girl, a 5 year old boy, and a 2 1/2 year old girl, so my 12 year old stepped up to be the mom that I could not be when I was in the hospital, I don't know how u have done it. U r my hero..and make me want to do better for myself. Keep rolling on girl!!

You are truly an inspiration!!!!!! I was pretty much reduced to a chair about 5 years ago due to a rare bacteria infection called pasteurella, caused from a cat lick ? I went into a coma and woke up about 4 weeks later with my right leg amputated above the knees, and due to severe neuropathy in my remaining leg, I’m in a chair 99% of the time! My ping for all of this rambling is, I always say, regardless of what happened , my greatest relief from all of it was I was able to raise my children to adulthood!! We traveled all over and they enjoyed the norms of childhood!! I don’t know how I would have ever done it then! I have a 3 yr old grandson and it breaks my heart every day because of all the things I cannot or will never be able to do with him, but then I also realize how lucky I am to even be alive!! I'm really so happy I discovered this wonderful channel...It serves to inspire both the able bodied & the disabled...(I'm seriously ill & hope never to complain about my limitations again) I'd love to see many more disabled individuals in social media...showing the World they're competent and accomplished individuals...and not the *sum* of their disabilities...

Just came upon this...soooooo cute. Brings back so many memories...the babies are soooooo worth it. We've all been there, even tho we may not be disabled or had twins, per se. Very cute. She is a wonderful mother...kids are worth everything.

It’s great seeing how she manages to adapt her way through motherhood with limited mobility as a result of a spinal cord injury. I have spastic hemiplegia cerebral palsy and I’ve felt that it would definitely be very challenging for me to handle having kids because my entire left side, especially my arm and leg are weaker than my right side. This is why adapting to your own surroundings is truly important for situations like this. I hope she is able to marry her fiancé soon as those babies are a bit older and more manageable.

I am a Mum of 2 from Nz although we are now living in China. My son is 5years&11months and has mild autism, my daughter Coco is 1year&4.5months old. I also have a spinal injury, severing my spinal cord quite badly through levels c2-c4, at the time my prognosis was more likely than not death and should I survive then my functioning was predicted to be very low due the level being so high. However through years of super intensive physio and OT, being a newborn as well regeneration also probably played a part in my dramatic recovery to the point where I could walk by age 4 (although my balance is still not great) and the nature of my disability is not immediately obvious to a stranger. When I was a high school student I spent a week at Burwood (awesome awesome place there) undergoing assessments, learning so much about my injury and discovering different tools to utilize in my everyday life. I met a middle aged man there who had been injured on a quad bike, as you do - we introduced ourselves and shared the 5 second version of what our injuries were ie: My name is _____. X many years ago My level is C#/T#/L#/S#. I fell/crashed/twisted/landed/was shot/stabbed/operated on etc. I was so shocked to learn that this guy was injured with much the same severity and at the exact same level as me. Yet this guy could not walk nor could he move any of his limbs, he had trouble with speech let alone breathing unassisted, this guy was completely reliant on the assistance of somebody else for every single aspect of his life. Complete quadriplegia I think is the term? Maybe I'm wrong on that but regardless I had never met anybody with injury with the same cord level as me so understandably it was quite confronting but the guy was so cool and despite his circumstances he was genuinely interested in the fact we had this in common and could find a sense of humour in the fact that I had left my referral paper at my previous appointment on the opposite side of the hospital and had to walk to retrieve it whereas he could have just ridden there in his chair. I'm not a complaining type of person but even as a 14 or so year old at the time I really admired this strangers steadfast strength of character. It's super awesome to see videos of other awesome parents with disabilities, embracing whatever their situation may be and getting creative with different ways to complete the various tasks and activities that come with caring for our children. I do have to say a few things in this video made me nervous, as other people mentioned the lack of head support the babies had when being picked up and also leaving one baby on the bed while taking the other to and from the bath. Babies only need 1 second fall off a bed or sofa (I know from experience with my own children). Having had a spinal injury myself for my entire life and (although not nearly as intensive now) the life long requirements of extra hospital visits, check ups, forever having to explain oneself as well as complications with travel and obtaining visas when you have a permanent injury. This is aside from the actual effects my injury has, such as severe neuropathic pain in my leg and almost no muscle tone or strength affecting the right side of my body. There are so many people suffering with afflictions worse than mine but personally I could never ever forgive myself if one of my two had suffered an injury or suffered any pain should they fall as a result of being momentarily distracted or failing to hold them securely. I have limited/almost no motor function in my right hand and side of my body so my left side basically completes all tasks while my right side kinda just comes along for the ride, whether that be walking or holding a baby/stroller pushing anything and everything really. So there are definitely ways to safely hold/transfer baby whilst still supporting them and maintaining your own balance. I know very well that babies are a lot stronger than we give credit for but for their size they are also quite forceful in their movements and a disproportionate amount of weight is contained in the cannon ball atop their cute little shoulders. PLEASE be extra careful with those beautiful babies, don't ever leave them on the bed or any other surface even for one second, and thank you AttitudeLive for another great informative video.

Well done Sarah. Don't be too concerned with all those super perfect arm chair experts, Uber mummies picking away at you. if they were perfect mothers them selves, they wouldn't feel the need put any other mother down. They would be supporting you and cheering you on , just like I am.

One thing I figured out quite early in having kids is everything is adaptable ...we all do it in a way that works for us and so will they as the babies grow and start moving. She will set things up that work for her. I have no doubt that she is a great mom and will raise these babies, along with dad, to be an awesome family.

I had triplets with very very little help and it was hard. Hat's off to Sarah. Great mum great attitude great dad. So some people have criticised the way the necks and heads were not supported. You know - as parents of multiples we're not perfect. Sarah has a twist - her disability and you know what she's doing a great job. I wonder what YOU did .... camera, lights reality - THIS IS GOOD. Interesting video. I'm high level paraplegic with teenage twins. We just treated every stage as a new way of life, got on with it, got good medical care, and figured it out. I didn't have or need any special equipment, just creativity. I wish people would not look on people like us as extraordinary but simply people who are living our lives. I have worked full time, right up to 2 weeks before I delivered and went back to work 12 weeks after they were born. It's normal life, just from a seated position. No magic involved.

i broke my back in a car wreak now im paralized from waist down i have a 9 month old its hard to take care of him vary hard to hold him feels like my back going out on him /its hard to deal with pain feels like a screw driver digging into my back 24/7 pain medicine dont really help my pain but im just bless God gave me a son

I’m a t-2 para for 20 years. I don’t know if I could have managed a baby. I can’t even pick up my cat. I took birth control against doctors recommendations at the risk of developing blood clots to prevent pregnancy. I don’t know how she managed so very well. I’m sure she has moments/hours/days when she is super frustrated, as we all do. It also helps immensely that she has a supportive partner, family and friends who can help. Not everyone has a support network. For those of you who say she should “just get a van to drive”, you have no idea how much they cost. A late model used one (2016) can cost around $25k (USD) up to around $70k for a 2018. Being disabled is expensive. Insurance/government doesn’t pay for everything. There is expensive, basic equipment you have to buy just to allow you to do the most basic daily tasks like shower and use the toilet. Then there are the health complications that inevitably come as you age, from shoulder injuries from repetitive overuse, skin breakdown from perpetual sitting and transferring from surface to surface that result in pressure ulcers, medical supplies like gloves and catheters and the list goes on an on. Not to mention the accommodations that must be made to your home so you can get in/out and through narrow doorways. I am impressed at how well she did with these tiny babies. And don’t worry, their necks are FINE!! I would love to see a follow up to see how they are managing now.

She has such an amazing support system in place! I think that's so good. I'm legally blind and I have children that are all grown up! I can't drive do to my uncorrectable vision. The driving was at times a very big challenge because I had my babies about 2 years and a little under 2 years apart. Sometimes I would feel very dependent on others to get from point a to point b. I say the generically because there were always places I would want to go but couldn't due to my disability. I made it work though. But at times I struggled.
