what i love about your videos is how you highlight a lot of important concepts through the video, even if they're not really needed for solving the problem in the fastest way possible, i find that pretty helpful as a beginner that's trying to fetch as much general concepts as possible in his head, awesome work dude.

full tank in 1.75 hrs fill rate = 1tank/1.75hr = 0.57 tank/hr // in fractions: full tank in 1&3/4 hr = 7/4hr fill rate = 1 tank/ (7/4)hr = (4/7) tank/hr in 1 hr: 1hr × 0.57 tank/hr = 0.57 tank (hr/hr cancel) // in fractions: 1hr × (4/7) tank/hr = (4/7) tank

The bottom part of the tank is full. Fuel flows to the bottom so the bottom part will always be the first part to fill.

If I said that to my primary school teacher in the 1950s I hate to think what the consequences would have been. Although if I had said " The bottom half" I wouldn't have been far off.

You don't say if the fuel tank is empty before adding fuel.

There's 7 quarter hours in 1.75 hours. Therefore after one hour it's 4/7 th full. 57% approximately. The most 'difficult" bit was dividing 4 by 7. I love these questions, always look for short-cuts, and then try to do them mentally. At 82 I need to keep exercising the grey matter.

Indeed, it is that simple. No need for a 20 minutes explanation; it took me 10 seconds to find the answer.

1/1.75 increments of .25 give a 4/7 ratio or 57% full

The wording is definitely confusing. To me, it implies that the fuel tank has identifiable parts. Several commentors have referred to a bottom and top half. The question really should be something like "what fraction of full". Motorcycles sometimes have a reserve tank. When the main tank ran empty, the motorcyclist can switch to the reserve tank and know approximately how far he can go before he runs out of fuel. In modern motorcycles, I understand that there is no separate tank but there are two fuel lines from the one fuel tank, one higher than the other. The motorcyclist switches to the lower line when fuel level gets below the upper line, and knows approximately how much further he can go before he will run out of fuel.

.57 using a calculator. Without a calculator, 1.75 is 1 3/4 or 7/4. 1 / 7/4 is 4/7.

To find out what part of the tank is filled after 1 hour, we need to calculate the fraction of the tank filled in 1 hour.If it takes 1.75 hours to fill the tank completely, then in 1 hour, 1/1.75 or 0.5714 (rounded to four decimal places) of the tank will be filled.Therefore, after 1 hour, approximately 0.5714 or 57.14% of the tank will be filled.

After 1 hour, you'd fill 57.143% of the tank. Dividing 105 minutes by 1 tank (1 / 105) yields 0.9524% filled per minute, times 60 minutes = .05714285... 9r 57.143%.
@jimmayors2315

Wouldn't that depend on how much fuel there is in the tank in the first place and how bit the take is overall?

Your solution is too long and tedious. I figured it out this way: 1.75 hours = 1hr 45min = 105 minutes. 60/105 = .5714 (which is exactly the same as 4/7). Also, .5714 tells you its a little over half full. By the way, 105min/2 = 52.5 minutes = half full, which is another clue to how full the tank is considering thats only 7.5 minutes from a full hour.

I did with the rule of 3: 1hrx1tank/1.75hr=0.57.. on this exercise, it doesn't say to answer by fractions, which would be a different method

1/1.75 = 0.5714285714285, which rounds to 0.57. as a fraction that's 57/100. It's more precise than 4/7.

1.75 hours ? Is that how TIME is expressed these days ? How about 1 hour 45 minutes ... or 105 minutes. Full tank in 105 minutes .... so how full after 60 minutes ? 60 minutes is 4/7 of 105 (4 x 15 minutes) / (7 x 15 minutes) So the tank is 4/7 full.

It depends on the geometry (shape) of the tank.
@terry_willis
@terry_willis 6 месяцев назад
Why? Regardless of the shape, the tank has a certain volume to be filled. If it was a regular cylinder shape or shaped like a corkscrew the answer would be the same.
