Chickens will come back to their coop each night to roost. Keep them locked in the coop for about a week, then let them free range. Let them out mid afternoon and you will notice them coming back to roost as the sun goes down. Of course you need to be aware of predators as well. Chickens are wonderful pets and they have their own personalities which is fun to watch.

Three boys, two dogs, a cat and granny, you’ve definitely got your hands full taking care of them not to mention all the house stuff. Phew 😅you’re amazing. Willow was way too stinking cute in her little sweater. Everything is coming together nicely and I’m loving this journey with y’all. ❤❤❤

I got my first chickens a year ago. They free range. They don’t roam too far. They know where their food and water is. They are fun. They have their own distinct personalities. I’ve enjoyed them. The hens lay their eggs in the coop but they sleep in the tree. It’s funny.

When you remodeled your rental single wide, I enjoyed every minute of it. And you sure left your landlord with a much better home than when you all moved in. Then when you bought this place I was so excited to get to watch it transform under Tim’s expert work and your love and care. I love when a new video gets posted..I always wave at you and say, “Hey, Valerie” right back to you when you say, “Hey, Ya’ll”! Love from Columbia, Missouri!

You can tell Tim is meticulous in every details taking care to do everything right! What a gift to have that much patience and energy to do his best! One never realizes how much help it is to move the “benches” to make it easier for the painter. Great job. You two are wonderful partners.

Valerie, my mom has had chickens for years. When you get your chickens and put them in their coop. Just keep them in it until they are grown. They will come back to it every evening at the same time. You have to worry about dogs, fox, coyotes.

The blue with the white trim is soooo pretty. The boys are going to love it. Tim makes painting look so easy. He does such a great job. You are just the best wife when it comes to helping Tim. The way you kept moving those benches around so he wouldn't have to keep getting up and down was so helpful and kind of you. Your love for him is so enduring.

The free range chickens are a good idea, but you'll need to keep them safe at night so nothing gets them. When Tim gets the fence up for the dogs, that would be a great place to let the chickens rome. You'll still need to secure at night. As for helping Tim, you feed the man those wonderful meals and come up eith the "Honey Do List." Which I know he loves you for.

Years ago, I told myself I am not washing out paint rollers and paintbrushes anymore. I started putting them in a ziploc and putting them in the fridge. The next day, I’d take the Ziploc out of the fridge, let the brush/ roller sit out (still in the Ziploc) to get to room temperature, then resume painting!

Love the color of the room. With the white trim, it will really pop. Might think of doing your kitchen in white and blue. It’s so pretty.

Valerie, Tim did great job painting, that’s great coverage paint. Looks so great. Renovating hard work that sometimes in the structure you see no progress but really there is. Taking a break is good idea then you’ll be ready to start fresh with excitement.

If you lock your chickens up for a week or so they will know its home and go back in the coup themselves at dusk. They are easy to raise and you will love all the eggs. You will do fine. Cant wait to see your chicken adventure.

Chickens are great! Wonderful pets. When we had them I would drive in the driveway after work and they would run up to the car and wait for me to get out because they knew I had treats for them from the leftovers at the group home I worked for. They will eat ANYTHING, so feed them all the leftovers and scraps. If you feed them eggshells make sure to break them up really small so they don't realize they're eating eggs, or they will decide to eat their own eggs. And after that happens it's almost impossible to break them of the habit. In the winter I fed them dry cat food once in awhile for extra protein, and also once in awhile a can of canned mackerel. They loved it. They will not wander away. We left them in the enclosure until after they laid their eggs in the morning and then let them free range. They always came right back to the coop at dusk.

I know you can feed your chickens the shells from their eggs to give them the calcium they need to produce eggs. You can Google it to read about it. Also they don't have taste buds so you can actually feed them hot peppers and the seeds from hot peppers. It won't bother them. They will love eating any scraps you have left over from making salads and veggies.

I love it when the daffodils start to flower, we’ve got loads and then the tulips, they look so pretty.

Boys of a certain age always want their bedrooms painted black. White furniture will go well with that colour.

You will do fine with chickens. We have around 16 in a coop with a court yard attached. It is screened in with chicken wire. We have too many neighbor dogs to let them free range. We hang a heat light inside to coop during the winter. We feed them laying mash and cracked corn in the am. We check eggs twice a day, so they don't break them. We also have a heated water container to keep it from freezing in the winter. Enjoy your new chickens.

Wow its all coming together and I think it's only when you look back at where you started , you realise just how far you've come. I know when we did our whole house renovations on a property we purchased, that hadn't been updated for nearly 25 years, it really helped us to stay positive with before and after pictures. You and your family are not just making a home you are making memories ❤😊

U need at least 1 rooster to warn the hens when trouble is around. The roosters protect the hens well when theyre free ranging. They automatically come back to their coop at sunset every evening so u can lock them up. We just ordered 25 american bresse chicks from carolina Rare Chickens in Lamar SC. He is a phenomenal guy and has all the orpington and brahma breeds you cojld ever want!

You could get chickens and they can be free arranged when you get them keep them in the coop for about 2 to 3 weeks so they’ll know where home is and they return every night for bed

Build what they call a chicken tractor. It has wheels on one end and you move it around the property to give them a fresh area. This also protects them from predators. Living where you are predators most like abound from the ground to the sky.

Hi Valerie, we have chickens on a standard house block. We have a hutch for them to sleep in at night and during the day we put them in a covered wire box, fairly large with no bottom so they can scratch around in the grass. This is just a temporary measure because we have only just moved in. We have let our chooks (Aussie for chicken) roam around the garden before, but you need to know that they will dig everywhere, especially where you have just planted or have been gardening. The best solution is to have a hutch with a large yard around it with bird wire all round and on top to stop birds of prey and foxes. That way they can scratch around and be safe and your garden beds are safe too. If you have good fencing on your property and don't mind them laying their eggs all over the place, then they will be ok in the yard. But be warned, they are extremely good at finding new hiding places to lay their eggs, so you need to be prepared to hunt for them. They are well worth the effort though.

Black would have been so cool. A shade of black is actually the color of the year for one of the big paint companies. I would never be brave enough to do the walls completely in black, but possibly half way up the wall, with white on top. The blue you picked is beautiful. I keep getting drawn to that beautiful wide window. It is like looking at a different picture everyday on the wall as the landscape changes by the day. So happy for you.❤

Contact your local extension office, every county should have one. They most likely have reference material and possibly classes on raising chickens.

Chickens always come home to roost. I had free range chickens and they stayed on our property and they will if they’re fed. At night, however, chickens like shelter. Just open the coop door and they’ll go right in at dusk. No wrangling needed. Also, a coop at night keeps them protected from predators.

Valerie maybe your son will like a good size chalkboard frame on one of the wall (like an accent wall ), Tim can make it for him and we will enjoy watching him doing it 😊.

We always do outside work in the spring, summer, and fall; inside work in the winter, rainy days and very hot days. We finished remodeling our home in two years. It was hard work, but we love the results. I enjoy watching your videos. I can see your husband's personality peeking out.

The chickens most likely will not wander off. However, the hawks will get them. The hawks got all my chickens when I lived on my little farm. Now I live in town in Kentucky and I have six chickens, and they keep me supplied with plenty of eggs.

At least you have teamwork. I always have to paint and tape by myself. Taping is the hardest part of the job in my opinion.

Chickens are pretty easy to care for, just have to make sure to lock them up at night cause living out in the country there are alot of predators! But once u get ur coop and chickens, keep them locked inside the coop for atleast week and feed and water inside the coop, and when u feed them call to them or shake the food so they will associate you with food. And feed then around the same time every evening. After a week of keeping them locked up in the coop u can let them outside for a couple hours but while they r out there don't feed them. Then to get them back inside just call or shake the food and again feed then inside, most will come but your going to have stragglers lol that might take a lil longer to get the hang of it, but they will learn. If ur getting baby chicks they need to ve kept inside until they get all there feathers and kept under a heat light and kept safe and locked up cause babies are def are higher on the predators radar. But most chickens at first won't stray to far from home, they will keep their home within eyesight and will wait for feeding time. But once they get older the they just automatically know when it's time to be put up. Most ppl don't like roosters but they really help keep ur chickens safe, cause they always are on watch. I've raised chickens last 14 years and have loved it. Some hardships and fun though. Love the color of the room you all choose. Love the channel

So after the bedrooms you can get granny’s bathroom done then the kitchen that will be awsome, I’m excited for the chicken coop! ❤️

Leave the chickens in the coop for the first week or so. Thereafter let them out during the day then feed them at dusk inside their coop. They are naturally going to return to their roost and dusk and feeding them at this time helps stragglers hurry back. Don’t feed them at any other time except for random scraps thrown to encourage them to come to you. They should be scratching and finding their own food. Flowers are safe only in hanging baskets or protected areas. Decks will need to be gated off and gardens well gated. We have 5 roosters, dogs and a guard goose. When eagles come near the rooster alarm sounds and the chickens run for cover and stay until all clear sounds. We probably have way more chickens than we need. I get a few new every year and older ones age out. We started in 2017. Warning…they are a gateway animal…we now have goats😏

Chicken mama for decades we don’t free range too many predators - have coop with very heavy doors -and electric fence around bottom of metal run- raccoons dig - hawks snatch from above- coyotes and fox - I gotta keep my girls safe - husband built me the Taj Mahal of coops
