Description:
You might have heard of an "Epiphone by Gibson" Spotlight Nouveau guitar before- but you've NEVER seen one BRANDED Nouveau. This is an incredibly rare guitar that has been lost for decades, only thought to have existed in promotional advertisements from 1986.
You can get the full story in my video, but essentially when Gibson was acquired by new ownership in late 1985, they decided to make a new sub-brand called Nouveau that would consist of Japanese (later Korean) made guitars, that were finally assembled in Nashville, TN USA. This allowed them to legally advertise them as made-in-usa. In 1986, a handful of acoustics were made with this Nouveau by Gibson branding, but next-to-no electric guitars. Gibson quickly abandoned the new name branding in favor of the better-known Epiphone brand when they finally brought the Spotlight model to production. These were essentially a PRS-knock off which was a fairly new company at the time. Gibson was sued over this design, so the Epiphone Spotlights only lasted one year, 1988.
This Nouveau branded spotlight is a rare find. I believe it to be one of the prototypes or at least a VERY EARLY production of this really cool model. This is perfect for a rare guitars collection consisting of Gibson, Epiphone or PRS guitars!
This prototype has a few unique elements that make it different from all other spotlights made. It came stock with Gibson pickups and no tone control. It has a coil-split switch instead of a tone control (this later became a push/pull pot in production run guitars. This one also has the much more desirable Strat-style tremolo instead of the defective Steinberger KB-X.
The pickups are really hot - but responded very well to touch sensitivity . They really pushed my amp and made even the cleans sound dirty. The coil split was definitely convincing for a Strat twanginess.
