Things I have mentioned above are completely my own interpretation and what I have learned during my stay. I might have generalized certain things. Be sure to apply things that you are comfortable with :)

Whatever you said was very generalized ... at the end of the day its the culture where you work in makes a difference but cannot be generalized to IT culture . Indian managers from the 70's kids they are from industry revolution era .they want to command , be respected like Sir amd Madam ...In USA its not much like them a bit different The art of saying "NO" is a huge mistake here in India .... in short you may loose job eventually and gradually I dont say every company or every manager is this way but most of managers about 90% are this way so does that 10% help ?????? You must be damn lucky to get such a kind of workplace ......or the practises that you say are good and beetter way to enhance career All the Best

US native here working in cloud tech. Absolutely agree on titles and hierarchy … not as important in the US. Also, we don’t put such a huge emphasis on collecting certifications. We also put less emphasis on tasks and more on other skills like critical thinking and innovation.

You are bang on right on the 'status' point. I have worked in Hyderabad for sometime and was surprised to see this culture in IT industry there. Though this is same across India, in Hyderabad it's quite on your face, like calling sir to manager and all. Currently I am in Pune and that culture is not that much on ur face but I agree this mind-set very indian.

I'm from the US, but my first enterprise level tech job was with a company based in India. This video made my experiences with that company make much more sense, as I didn't have any real grasp on the workplace cultural norms of Indian businesses at the time. I'd worked in other places in the US previously, so I took most of the points brought up in this video as being the norm; it was jarring to be thrust into an entirely different set of standards that I didn't intuitively understand.

Hey GK, thank you so much for making this video! I wish I have watched this before I join my last company. I was an engineering manager (US based) and my whole team was based in India. My team members were the smartest I ever worked with but they never say "no" to me. At the same time, all leaders above my level won't take "no" for an answer. Another thing I thought it was "funny"... a direct report asked me if he/she can call me by my first name. I was confused and asked why not. I bet you know the answer. Please, don't "sir" me, I'm a servant manager.

Labour laws also do matter In in India if you overwork and if don't get paid nothing happens, but in the US they'll definitely drag you to the court of justice Because of the huge unemployment and enough human resources Indian employers (not all) really don't care about your work life balance

Typically in most corporate cultures in the U.S. you call your manager by their first name and that's even the case with our directors and Vice Presidents. One of my Indian friends called our manager "sir." Our manager was not comfortable with this and asked him to call him by his first name.
@sid4752
@sid4752 3 года назад
It’s only in India that we still have this backward attitude, which the British left us for. If you call someone “Sir”, they get really uncomfortable. Even your professors in college ask you to call them by their first name. Watch a couple of lectures of SOC 119 on RU-vid, that professor literally calls his students “Dude” or “Dawg”, and wouldn’t care if someone called him the same.
