Listen to Jeff. First time you get caught in a rain storm there will be lots of surface rust . Having grown up in the south, storms are almost a daily fact of life from May to October and lately about year around.
When you put antifreeze in REMEMBER 50/ 50 mix and use Distilled water for the 50% water. Also, if you plan on letting car idle once it gets to summer temps make sure you have the fan shroud in place because the fan’s distance from the radiator it will run hot and boil over. I learned this on the Boulevard at Myrtle Beach about 5 mins after I joined the bumper to bumper crawl. The car started to buck and idle erratically and then steam started roiling out … this was with a new radiator, belts, fresh 50/50 antifreeze mix and no clutch fan. The car didn’t have the shroud when I bought it and I had no clue it was missing. So much for it’s debut Boulevard Cruise. Epic FAIL..! Biggest pain in the ass car ever but I was 16 and loved it. So if you don’t have the shroud find one before summer get to B’ham AL…
Don’t beat yourself up about it… Just wire brush off what you can by drill and by hand and POR what you can the rest WD-40 works miracles. For surface rust.
The mounts didn't line up afterwards so I worked on it today and got them back in line. I changed that oil and antifreeze as well as you saw. I got fuel to the carb tonight and when I tried turning it over, zip. Nothing. Not even a spark. I checked the coil and distributor and it all looks right. I'm stumped again, Mark.
We got the plugs in yesterday and I finished off the motor mounts today, changed the oil, and put in fresh antifreeze. Tried to crank it tonight and nothing. Not even a spark. Can't figure it out.
