Yes of course! I use water and acrylic paints and blend browns/blacks until I have my desired shade. For my greys I use black/white, again till I get my desired shade. I do the standard wipe on/let sit till what I want/wipe off method as any stain then I seal with poly.
I usually paint my lettering on rather than using the vinyl as my finished project. Will this process still work to position my image on my wood if I use my vinyl as a stencil?
It will! I have a sign which is 4 feet long and I couldn't lay my stencil without the parchment paper. Make sure your parchment paper completely covers half your board then you can move it around as you need it and ensure your lines are all even.
For my wood signs I use a poly coat. I don't stick to a brand but tend to use Minwax Polycrylic more than any other due to price/size comparisons. www.minwax.com/wood-products/clear-protective-finishes/interior/minwax-polycrylic-protective-finish
