30 Years Ago Today (04/07/1990) I was 11 at the time. I'm 41 now. Italia 90 was the best world cup. The tears, the drama, the hot summer nights in England, World in Motion in the charts, the Italia 90 merchandise in the shops, the glow of the TV with Italia 90 as the beautiful summer sun would set....
I totally disagree, without Gazza England had no chance on the pitch but if we look at it extrafootballisticly with the referee at had in Codesal, maybe England would have won.
yep and argentina were the worst finalists of all time...should have gone out to brazil, yugoslavia and italy...dreadful and never won a corner in the final..!
Hello. Yes (with Gascoine) Perhaps!! without Gascoine?....Argentina lost Caniggia too and lost by a penalty to the germans, AND Maradona playing with injury!! (from 🇦🇷)
Matthaus was one of the most complete all round footballers of all time, could play anywhere and be amazing, perhaps only Di Stefano as good an all round game
Gazza = Football Genius Beckham = Marketing Genius Rooney = Overated. Gazza was the last truly world class English player and England hero, fact. 1990 and 96, the last time the nation truly got behind the country. Those were the days when wearing the national shirt meant something,
It was chris waddle who was englands magic man......he was mercurial for england in 1990.....he tore the belgians to pieces and was man of the match against the germans.......wonderful player
Alright, let's be serious here: There were honestly just 4 teams that could make it: Italy, Argentina, Germany, England. That round of semi-finals has been a real war and we'd loved to have a real match, the inventors of football on one side and the ones who made it an art (Italy) on the other. That'd have been a real game for the ages. :)
England had a great Team. For me, Waddle was the best player of that cup: technique, balls and blood, Lineker, a genius, and Gazza... we love Gazza in Argentina. It was unfair that Waddle failed in the PK round final shot. That was a men' s Team. Real football. Germany was a killing machine, but against England, first, and then against Argentina, played with respect and a little fear I think. Best wishes from Argentina.
I think Klinsmann said they were apprehensive abut the match..Beckenbauer's game plan to shut Gascoigne down worked..If Bryan Robson had not been injured, England could have got the control of the German midfield..It was a terrible loss, sorry I did not overate Argentina in this tournament but they got very far..
Bobby Robson had two problems at this Cup that he did not resolve. 1. The loss of Bryan Robson, the key anchor man who would have freed Gascoigne in the Semi against Germany...2...How to play Waddle and Barnes...he should have forced both of them to move infield alot more and be in much closer contact with Lineker, the front man...England's forward play would have been far more devastating...what England had at that world cup was Lineker's predatory skills, Gascogine's flashes of brilliance..an excellent back-line and Platt's robustness and key goals...
Many will not agree with me But this was one of the finest national teams in world football, n the best team in Italy 90, the only time i cried over a football match in my heart i was sure we'll win the world cup best team best manager at the time hands down sadly in football teams need some luck too
@@reccco you are right about that but england played well against holland and ireland but only could manage a draw. semi final against germany was a great performance
@@reccco im turkish from germany and say italia was the best team in 1990,defensive but strong. Argentina just played one good game in the whole tournament which eliminated italy. the final was obvious that west germany will take it
@@gunnyakdo1653 I think that Germany and Italy were the best teams of the tournament. Italy defensively perfect, while Germany was a real attacking machine. Final between them should have been awesome. It's difficult to predict who could have won, I'd give slight advantage to Italy, only because of home support.
TEAM ENGLAND I ALWAYS LIKE !! THIS TEAM HAS THE SPIRIT OF A FIGHTER AND PLAYS A VERY INTERESTING FOOTBALL. SHE WAS WORTHED FOR A PRIZE PLACE AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 1986, 1990, 1998, 2002, 2018. A LITTLE LUCK.
Germany played poorly in the final, but were a world class team throughout the tournament. Therefore it cannot be a sad day, they were deserved champions. Charlton was spot on, not hitting the target in a penalty shoot out - that is a sad day in football...
Germany did not play poorly in the final. They were the clear better team. Argentina had pretty much not a single chance for a goal. The only thing that was bad about Germany in that final was that they missed so many good chances and needed a penalty to score.
yeah germany were outstanding all through this world cup this was the only game that was close and it was very close in fact waddle hit the post 2 minutes from the end if it went in england wins.
One of 2 great English sides, the other being Euro 96, that should've made it to a final and possibly gone on to win. Loved Italia 90. No other tournament will ever come close.
The English media talk too much about that game! Probably because their record in International football is disappointing, with exception to that only cup they won at home in 1966. In 1990 they were so lucky to beat Belgium in the 120th minute after Belgium, who were the better side, hit the bars at least twice. Then they won in extra time against Cameroon whom outplayed them and went in front.
@@madajas6100 Lucky goal , against the Belgians they dominated you for that entire match Scifo taught Gazza Boy how to play football . Cameroons were dominating you till you got a goal out of thin air .
@@princesofthepower3690scifo didn't even had a excellent world cup in Italy, second thing, gazza did play well and he was responsible for England's winning goal and he and Chris waddle ripped the belgians in pieces
@akeemMali And what did the german squad in 1966 do after they got screwed - They congratuled the english players and shook their hand! Here a little lesson in football rules: - 3:2 (1966): Linesman signalizes that it wasn`t a goal or that he at least hadn`t seen if the ball was in or not and then changed his decision. - 4:2 (1966): Audience on the field - The game has to be stopped immediately if something like that happens.
England have had horrible luck in the world cups ( except the one in 1966 of course )....This semifinal....David Beckam's red card in '98....Lampard's "disallowed" goal in 2010.....i could name a lot of other games but they won't fit in a comment
It started in 1966 when England hosted the World Cup, and all the publicity had the Union Flag over it (as did the Official Mascot) as technically foreign visitors were coming to Great Britain. After that World Cup win, England for many years came to represent Britain as a whole especially as the other nations rarely or never qualified. It was Euro 96 that the St. George flag came back with a bang... I'm Welsh, but was definitely shouting for England this tournament. They were the only British team in the knockout stage and most of the players came from clubs people support, so why not? :D
As an England fan I do recall that Thomas Hassler went off injured very early in this game and he was excellent. Their goal was lucky. But the Germans executed their penalties. I still cannot understand why a geriatric Shilton was on goal over Chris Woods.
Two German Leaders!Whenever 90-98 or 2000's as Managers:Matthaus,Klinsmann and Vôller. England:Gazza,Hoddle,Goal Machine(Shearer),Barnes,Ince as Managers too for now!
That video ended abruptly I told him it may be different but it must have come in one ear and out of the other to arguably England's most creative midfielder in 100 years or maybe
I am an indian but a hard c.ore English supporter.i have been following English football since euro 96 and was left heartbroken when they lost to germany on penalties that too after having played so well.iam basically an anglophile and love everything which is british, history ,culture everything.i wear Dunlop shoes when everyone is going for nike ,reebok etc.and I am highly satisfied with Dunlop shoes.my suggestion to FA is that they should a sports psychologist for their national team who in turn should remind the players of the greatness of Britain .it is land where sun never sets.such a small country but had colonies in part of the globe even india where I hail from was under british rule.no mean achievement.cambridge has the distinction of producing the highest no.of nobel laureates (90)more than any American university.stupendous achievement.sir Isaac newton,John Dalton ,Shakespeare and the list goes on and on. English players should be injected with pride, passion and most importantly killer instinct which I think is responsible for close defeats.they should not try to ape anyone rather strict to their strengths and play overall good football.they should also visit the church more and seek more goodluck from almighty because they badly need that.remember Maradona hand of god ,italia semifinal 90,euro 96 semi final,98 world cup argentina penalty shoot out etc etc etc. Guys just tell yourself that you the land of rulers ,you are the best ,we still would have been living in iron age if not for GREAT BRITAIN.i mean it. just be tough ,believe in yourself and above all be British
Shashwat Priadaeshi, are you also proud of the fact that the British starved millions of Indians to death because they created a man made famine by diverting locally grown food to force the people into submission? It's OK to respect certain aspects of a foreign culture as I do also but not to the extent of worshipping them as you would God Almighty and totally degrading your own. That's complete brainwashing.
Makes me laugh, ireland had just as much chance in that world cup as england No one tells the truth about italy playing ireland in quarter finals, where the italians totally owned the referee that night, and made sure ireland could not play. Ireland were screwed over in that world cup quarter final, the only time i could not stand the ref in my life, as that referee made sure ireland could not play that night, and ireland went out. Love the way 4 years later ireland got there revenge on italy in new jersey and ireland beat the italians Also great how argentina beat italy next game in 1990 world cup, to knock out italy If you host tournaments, we understand you get to cheat, but at least give the other side a chance of playing. Ireland, had just as much chance as england to win italia 1990, and ireland were screwed over in rome, by the italians owning the referee who made sure ireland could not play in that game. At least england played west germany and both had equal chance of getting through, ireland were screwed over in 1990s world cup quarters by italy. Its the only time in my years watching football, that the referee was so biased to one team, making sure the other team could not play. Thats life, and i always laugh that england said they could of won that world cup, you had same chance as ireland did, ie an outside chance By the way best team by far won, ie west germany People forget this world cup was the celebration of german reunification Weird how that happened just as that happened, when both west germany, and east germany became a unified country again. West germany was easily best team in italia 1990, and were deserved winners, no matter what england says.
That was England's best chance of a second World cup. How did the normally solid Shilton allow that fluke to happen? He got his bearings all wrong It must be the only time I ever saw him mess up. What an unforgettable final with Argentina it would have been.
@@KaitainCPS @KingKaitain But keepers must be prepared for everything in football If he stayed on his line he'd have a much better chance of saving the deflection
Mate, you cant look at football in that way. 1 goal changes EVERYTHING, had it been 2-2 at half-time we would not have been chasing for the equaliser in the seconds half, and therefore wouldn't leave ourselves open for the counter attack, which was how the 3rd and 4th German goal was scored.
lol this was THE last time England did something moderately decent LOL more than 20 years ago LOL face it brits, you may have invented the game, but leave it to the brazilians, germans, italians, argentinians or the spaniards to PLAY IT...
@akeemMali By the way: Putting the ball into the goal with your fist hasn`t also much to do with football! So every foul play is okay for you as long it wasn`t done by Germany?!
I cant wait for this world cup. Dont have huge hopes for England but we can still dream. I dont think the Germans will be as good as their 2010 team, and Spain have got to fall apart soon. I think the Argies or Brazil will be the biggest threat this time..still, cant wait!
Yep...definately the Germans have peaked and are in decline! They have years of rebuilding ahead of them. Some drastic reforms needed in the Bundesliga to get the younger German players to rise through the ranks. Till then they will just be making up the numbers in international competition.
Adrian Whittaker Lol being from Cumbria myself, I was actually alluding to the ills facing English football. They need to do something drastic to get the game back in order. And it wouldnt hurt to start with the EPL. English football was at least grinding its way back into relevance up till 1996 (with the usual ups and downs). Then the EPL just took over. If the Bundesliga can work for the country then so can the little money grubs behind the EPL. Its give and take. Not just take take and more take.
Come on Roberto Baggio was a much better young player than Gascoigne in Italia 90. And so what about Freddy Rincon,Enzo Scifo,Robert Proseneski,Jurgen Klinsmann,Aron Winter,Gheorghi Hagi,Michel,Lacatus,Enzo Fransecoli,Claudio Canigga,Thomas Brolin,Dunga and the least goes on and on and on. So that's why I said gazza wasn't the best young player at Italia 1990
@@GeordieBoy1955 Yeah and in the semifinal(and bronze medal match) your luck supply was over and you lost to better and superior teams(Germany and Italy), like you always do.;)
@SuperJuliusC You cant actually believed Maradona premediated that hand goal. It just Happened. But thats beside the point. The foul that got Gascoine cried...the same foul was against him. Do u know what he did? He jumped back on his feet to go shake the German player's hand. Now thats football. But the German guy just layed there to exagerate..but after he saw Gascoine crying he felt bad on his Bad action. Come on buddy...de honest!!!
@2608adrian Because the're cheat. If u look @ the foul Gascoigne made...it wasnt harsh at all. But the german player overact so the ref booked him. The same foul was made on Gascoigne harsly but he stand up right away...and shaked Brehmer'hand. Thats why at the end of the game that player went to Gascoigne to pacify him because he knows he cated harshly. Look at the final too, they're cheated also. Voeler just dived.
@SuperJuliusC Pay attention to my comment. I was reffering to that 86 team against germany. I Know my history. I meant that Platini team against so then not the cheater Voeler. Great German team in 86. I respect that team. But the Klinsman WC Im sorry. Even Beckebaur is a cheat. Watch the highlights in 74.
