June 2023: This is the first of two episodes about the renovation and restoration of the main house (called a 'lamia' in Italian) at La Bolla. This one focuses on the transformation of the verandah and on the renovation of the two original barrel-shaped in the lamia, used as bedrooms.
The lamia was initially bought as a holiday home in 2005/6, for 65,000 euros (in the good old days when there were 1.4 euros to the £ sterling!) and it got used as such for some wonderful family holidays over two to three years. Unfortunately, due to personal and family reasons, it lay unused and abandoned from 2009 until 2021, when we (Sally and her second husband, Pete), decided to make it our home. Incredibly, for an abandoned and derelict property with the doors left wide open for so many years, there was absolutely no vandalism, graffiti or damage, other than people just taking what was removable - you can see in these episodes how we have worked with local trademen to turn the lamia from dereliction to habitation!
