Chief Albert John Luthuli served as the President of the ANC from 1952 to 1967. Despite being banned and jailed, it was Luthuli’s religious belief that the road to freedom was via the cross - principles closely aligned to those of Martin Luther King Junior, a leader of the civil rights movement in the United States. The first African recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for advocating non-violent resistance to racial discrimination, Luthuli eventually acknowledged the necessity for an armed wing of the ANC.
