Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika is one of Africa’s most evocative pieces of music. At the turn of the 19th
century, Enoch Sontonga composed Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika to uplift his brethren, and it spread far
and wide. Unlike his well-known contemporaries Mahatma Gandhi and Sol Plaatje, Sontonga
died young, in relative obscurity and in abject poverty. Little did he know that his humble hymn
would become an anthem and, over a century, be embraced by many across the continent as
the soundtrack of their souls.
