Its terrible how things have changed @ Newport & Cardiff.

As these two stations used to be brilliant for freight traffic, It's a great shame how now there is very little freight especially at Cardiff, on a brighter note its great so see lots of Castle class HSTs working between Cardiff and the West Country (well done GWR) I also noticed a lot of ex Anglian units now working for Trains for Wales. Filmed on 13th May.

Great video. What struck me is that there is a much better range of passenger stock than when I lived in South Wales in the 90s. Back then it was mainly HSTs and 158s on the mainline. Pacers on valley lines, and whatever Central Trains could rustle together for the Nottingham service - often a 153!

Your choice of black & white for some clips is quite good at expressing the mood etc. I know that long telephoto shots tend to make the somewhat heavy OLE setup on the GWML electrification look even worse than it is. More recent installations elsewhere, such as Bromsgrove to Longbridge etc look better, though.

Great video, especially 'Max class 56 Veratappen'!! Nice take off the Grid. Newport & Swansea see more action these days than Cardiff unfortunately, with a bit more freight/trip workings etc. Will be better from the autumn though when the 67 hauled(& shoved) WAG trains return. All 3 sets will be on an intensive Cardiff-Holyhead corridor from 13th September. HTH.

Last time i went to Cardiff there were triple headed 37s and 56s had been around for only a couple of years , Canton was rammed and you stood on the station and there was a freight every 10 mins , it was the best . Sad seeing the decline in traffic and railway infrastructure nowadays

Another great video of the area i spent many a happy time at cardiff covering the class 37's on the Rhymmney line and the 47's 50's and. 67's and 37's on the rugby specials with my son's Matthew and Ashley all captured on Vhs!!!🚦🚦🚝🚉🚞🚟🚂

I live in Australia now but doesn't many an hour at both Newport and Cardiff in the 80s. The endless stream if coal and iron trains all gone, tripe headed 37s and peaks on the trains to the north. Thanks for footage

Changed beyond recognition! Fond memories of Saturdays in schooldays, mid to late 1970's, touring Severn Tunnel Junction, Ebbw Vale and Canton, courtesy of a generous Father who took an interest in my hobby, as my Grandfather was formerly a driver at Bristol Bath Road depot!

I remember the old Newport and Cardiff back in the early 80’s - 37’s everywhere! Iron ore, oil trains, etc. Brilliant to see. Nice bit of footage but I am happy that I saw the old version of Newport.

Your right about the 170s Mike, they transferred about a dozen of these from GA to TfW some time ago. They seem to be in the same livery as well.

Such great days Nige, so many industries have gone from that area, and It looks like Port Talbot will be next. Take care on your travels, Dolly's had the runs all this week but It doesn't seam to be bothering her.

@@antman09ful1 I know mate.... It never ceases to amaze me that it just seems a total collapse of British Industry.... I used to load out of Port Talbot.... And Ebbw Vale year's ago with hot rolled steel bud.... Hope Dolly gets better soon mate and give my regards to Sue please Mike....

A shadow of it's former self, even 10 years ago was 'busy' but looking back at my notes from 1997 could spend a day from 0600 - 2100 on Newport and have up to 80 freight movements, coal, ore, loads of steel slab for Llanwern and loads of engineers and enterprise workings all of which are long gone.

I remember the days when there was a constant stream of coal trains going through these two stations, up until the 1980s. I also remember, up until the early 1960s, the old Alexandra Docks Railway, a separate line through Newport primarily for coal trains, all steam hauled, running from the Valleys down to the Docks. It used to go along the back of Redland Street then crossed Malpas Road and ran alongside Shaftesbury Street crossing the main railway line near the Castle before making its way down to the Docks.

Mike who ever designed the electrification for the great western mainline should to be hung from a catenary, its ruined the countryside and the amount of metal used at junctions around Newport is a disgrace. Thanks for looking at my video, regards Mike wm

All was ok, and I didn't get wet, but It was a very wet day, the UK has had the most rain since records began in this month of May.

Fantastic video. It is truly a shame how times have changed though I cannot ignore the stations entangled in a metalwork mess. This country can’t design good catenary.

It is quite clever how the lower connection just hooks on and a pin is put through the upper connection. However it is monstrously over-engineered compared with those on other British lines and European lines - and they have decades more experience in the ruggedness of these structures than we have. These do cover two lines unlike the other British and the European ones, but even so they do appear overdone - I imagine there must be a reason but I have yet to hear it.

I’ve lived in the Cardiff area all my life and been a railway fan since 1981...my word, yes its changed! Nothing exciting to see anymore. No Double headed or triple headed Port Talbot to Llanwern Iron-ore trains, no coal trains anymore, no chemical tank trains to/from what was BP in Llandarcy, freight is nowhere near the levels it was in the 1980’s 😟Now we also have those awful IET’s as a shoddy, but expensive replacement for our great HST’s and catenary everywhere 😞🇬🇧 There is really nothing to see anymore, but I think that applies to most if not all of the network now.

@@ianjones4116 Lol thanks Ian alls well hope you are too. If Didcot Oxford, which is 9 miles, cannot be electrified as you say I wouldn’t hold your breath re your electrification hopes! You only have to look at the over engineered OHL equipment used on the GWR scheme to see why it was over budget.

Where have all the dirty 37s gone !! Are the tunnels to the right at Newport still used ? Sad no stabling point there any more. Good to see 56 heading to Shrewsbury, off to join the 97s at Coleham . Not a patch on original Shrewsbury Sheds. Thanks for sharing. 👍😎🐢

Ian I'm with you about no treble header 37 on the iron ore trains, don't know about the tunnels, SP is now more car part which had a great assortment of locos to view in days gone bye. The 56 was on route learning to and from Landore. Thank you Ian for your comment. Cheers Mike.

@@antman09ful1 cheers Mike, interesting about 56, I wonder if Shrewsbury drivers go to Landore, or other way round. My Dad was a Salop Man (lol), but they only got to Hereford and Llanelli over the Central Wales line. In the steam days, he would work to Old Oak Common, also to Newton Abbot, stay overnight then work back next day. Would be good if Salop crews were getting a bit more miles in. Dad was LMS then BR. I suppose it depends on which TOC you work for , as to where you go. Thanks very much for your reply. 😀👍

While I agree it is nice to see the HST's in service, their light load of 4 coaches reminds me of the indignity suffered at the end of the Deltic's career when they were reduced to goods and semi-fast services....

I've never done Cardiff but I've been to Newport 3 times. Twice it was very busy with freight and once it was hardly anything. Seems you caught it on a bad day.

I lived in Cardiff up until 1989. It was great in the late 70s and 80s. Triple headed 37s on the iron ores,replaced by double 56s,then a single 59 and then 60s before it all vanished with the closure of Llanwern steelworks. We had plenty of oil traffic too with plenty of trains to Milford Haven. Coal and steel traffic was immense too. Mail trains as well. And to top all that off we had 25s on the Marches line, replaced by 33s then ETH 37s when the rancid 155s were all withdrawn. 31s latterly 33s on the Cardiff Portsmouth routes. Countless amounts of different DMU types as well if you liked them. Cardiff really was a trainspotters haven. It really is deplorable how all the major industries in South Wales have vanished. I still love Cardiff though. It has its moments tbf. And it's still busy for local trains. That we must atleast be thankful for. Great video Mike. I need a return visit myself tbh.

What fantastic customer service from the driver of 166206 at 1.55 (not!). How insulting to just waggle an admonitory finger at the three passengers who are obviously scuttling to catch the train. I thought the idea of a passenger service was to actually help the travelling public. Has the penalty regime become so harsh as to override the customer service principle of what used to be the most customer focused of all public transport systems?

I can't think why there's no freight: according to the Daily Mail, Telegraph and the Sun, Britain is Booming! Although I do wonder if placing Trade Barriers in our way might possibly cause us a few problems down the line, as it were.... but hey ho, Blue Passports eh?! Wonder where all the freight went, though? Are the motorways full of heavily-laden trucks? Once the Australia deal is done there will be in increase of rail freight: millions of tons of Ozzie Beef, Lamb and Kangaroo for our supermarkets!

Well Paul I used the word terrible because South Wales did have a lot of freight working with loads of class 37 working including trebleheaders, and now there is a big decline in the freight service's due to all the industry which has gone. Thanks Paul for your comment. Cheers Mike.
