I've noticed this too. Fans always say "Be healthy, your health comes first" but people always lose interest in them once they do gain weight unless if it's in the right places (ex, thighs).
Thighs? Only to a certain point... Don’t forget how strict beauty standards are there. I would say only chest and butt are allowed to be bigger and hips are more about the bones being a little wider rather than having more weight there.
@@irenebubble990 I would say thighs as Hwasa became a hot topic after she gained more weight (yes, she did also get hate but she's also got more #1 in brand reputation after tht). Ryujin is another eg, she gained slight weight in the thighs and people love her more now. I'm sure there's more examples, I just can't think lol. And I don't think females can change their chest/boobs tht much after puberty. But I could be wrong. But if people gain more weight in the upper half of the body, they typically get hate (like arms, torso). Idols with a bigger chest aren't tht popular (eg, Jihyo). Somi and Jessi are the only exception I can think of.
@@liz2668 Definitely not breasts, yeah. Places like thighs or hips are seen as the most desirable places to gain weight. There was even an era where there a fever trend of honey thighs back in the day. Idols who gained weight on their chest area such as Hyuna or Sunmi tended to be accused of plastic surgery.
@@luwenjun2079 Right, reminds me of Jun Hyoseong. Though, her weight gain and maintain was aided by netizens. She was actually forcing herself to eat more then, which brings us back to artists like Sunmi. The public eye is never happy either way smh
@@vip5hawol People just want an idol to be the opposite of what they do or are and only very few are able to get into netizens' good graces regardless of weight gain or loss. If you are naturally skinny? Gain some weight. Oh but you gained weight on your face or arms? You're fat now. If you're naturally a bit more fuller or has a body shape that is seen as unattractive? Lose weight. Oh, you lost too much? Please go back to gain some weight, you look like a skeleton/anorexic, did you get plastic surgery? There is no winning once netizens target you until you stop giving a fuck, and, unfortunately and of course understandable, that is something hard to do when you're criticized for every little thing you do.
I'm so proud of her for being able to discuss bulimia publicly. I can't imagine how shamed and stressed she would feel having people know but spreading awareness of the issue is so important .
I still don’t like how even after treatment she promotes diet culture. She always talks about dieting and belly fat publicly, and being skinny telling in front of everyone how she gained weight. I think it’s very irresponsible for an ex ED.
@@claire6253 she's not irresponsible. She had bulimia and maybe she's still on it. She talks about diet not for promotes, it is because she's still struggling with it. Ed is one of the most hard things, just imagine what is to live with it in Korea.
As someone that has bulimia for 10+ years, i could NEVER imagine talking about it to my family or friends, yet let the public know about it! She must be so strong! As the video creator noted, these things never really leave you, you can just hope to put your unhealthy mechanisms towards other things (work, sports etc). i hope IU is okay and will manage to see herself in a more forgiving light.
@@claire6253 the vid says that she doesn't talk about it much now, And about the belly fat, I don't know if she is really promoting people to be self concious tho? because it's just her thoughts and it is understandable, thus I don't think she is really serious at that moment
theres a difference between losing too much weight and gaining too much weight, obviously she was getting thin and that wasn't something good to see since she looked sick and gaining too much weight isn't good either
@@giaaa1278 she NEVER gained too much. EVER. we’ve got to stop normalizing and romanticizing anorexic bodies to the point looking at a normal/healthy body that are STILL thin is assumed to be ‘overweight’ I wasted 7 years of my life being anorexic and the people that encourage Ed’s in others are the most annoying and most selfish people ever.
right...diet r not easy as you guys thought..especially she have to repeat whenever she's filming drama or comeback a new album..please stop body shaming..she's not that bad when gains weight..I just hate seeing a 'too thin' people..she lost a lot of energy when she's diet..her metabolism was reduced..also she always less balances and always keep droping stuff accidently😪
For yearsss knetz bullied IU calling her a choding but then gawk at every post she makes. They are obsessed and wish to be her, then tear her down because they cant be her. The pressure of being a soloist at 15 and trying to make it in the music industry alone is too much pressure alone with people online commenting about your weight
I rmmbr IU asked Itzy what is their diet/how they eat in a day. Itzy casually answered they eat well so they dance more energetically. IU looked surprised and later explained she had to diet(?). At that point, I feel like hugging IU cuz I remember seeing in this video IU sees thin=success. And there ws one behind the scene mv(?) recording saying she is hungry but she cant eat well cuz it will show, got me like IU you are good dear. You arw worthy dear. I hope anybody reading this will gain enough confidence and will not feel like what IU feels. Take care💝
@Unfinished sentenc- it's sad that lia herself has lost a dangerous amount of weight before due to people hating on her for no absolute reason. She's looking a lot healthier now which is good. I hope iu is doing better as well. She's been through so much and it's sad to know that she's struggled with an ED. Idols need to be excepted for who they are and not their appearance
Of all the idols you’ve covered, IU’s case is the most heart-breaking to me. She’s given her soul, her entire life to this industry and her craft but is still struggling to find contentment in it. I’ve never cried watching one of these videos, until this one.
I think AMFG videos is THE BEST RU-vid channel about idols. It doesn't just show body transformations. It tells people's stories, shows what they've went through, which is directly have affected their physical appearance as well. I just love this channel so much. Thank you so much for all your work💗 Big support and love 💗💗💗
I love how you’re not just talking about her sudden weight loss and weight gains, you’re also linking it with her career and expectations within that. I learned more about my favorite Kpop star, IU, in this video :))
I don't think idols should be able to debut before 18. Having ppl critique your body and every move starting at age 14 would cause anyone to have body dysmorphia.
because she is so small already when she loses weight you can tell. you can tell how thin she is by her legs for sure I hope she exercises right and builds up muscle to be strong and healthy because you can tell even though she said she was recovering from ed, she could still be going through phases of it. I hope she is doing well 🥺
Not to mention that she has been going through this for so long.. it's not going to be easy to change habits without the proper support... Unfortunately I can imagine living in Korea with an ED must not be easy.. on top of that she's in the entertainment industry which also doesn't help.. Anyway, I just really hope she finds the strength inside her but also the proper support around her to leave this thing behind for good! (And as a person who had an ED and body dysmorphia I have to say.. this thing never leaves you.. you just need to learn to live with it and consciously make good choices.. it's a constant battle with your brain.. it does get easier with time but it's always there!)
The best way to prevent celebs being conscious about their bodies is to not talk about it at all. Its the nature of us to be conscious of ourselves when we are getting talked out whether its good or bad just stop talking about it and get a life.
YT is really after your channel. crazy how they'll go all out on an informative channel, but refuse to take down legitimately harmful creators... Thanks again for always taking the time to reupload and even update as time goes by
I used to have bulimia and struggled with disordered eating as well and only seeing someone else talking about it makes me realize how messed up ED's mindset is. Now that I'm healthy and I hear IU's 2014 interview I keep thinking ''noooo, don't do that, you silly goose! This is so unhealthy and terrible'' but then I remember I used to do exactly the same thing. You really think a bit of fat makes you look awful and you have to do the most ridiculous toxic diets to lose weight 'fast', that you can't eat more than 500 calories because it means weightgain. I wish she focused more on her mental health, because it's not the body that's the problem, it's the mindset. Associating thin = success is extremely toxic, she should really work on her self-image, acceptance because she will never satisfy netz. They will find problems in any weight she lose or gain
She's grown and matured so much from her past self, she has realised and understand she can't satisfy everyone but only do work she feels is good with good intentions and like minded people or people relating to her can like her crafts
This is great video. One thing to add is the recent deaths of some of IU’s closest Kpop friends also affected her mental health and physical health. Her recent song Eight talks about loss, it honestly made me cry a lot for her and for the people lost. IU has been through a lot I only wish the best for her.
I think its because once idols reach normal weight range they start looking less doll like but more "realistically" human and people realise they can be similar to them and it's not that interesting anymore. There is a certain appeal in what seems unattainable afterall to humans. Therefore many idols experience much more fame when notably underweight. (Enviably thin waist, extremely petite frame etc) There is few to the exception of that effect, but those had to fight hard and even then I think most of them don't get the amount of attention for their visuals that IU had eg for her sweet potato diet body.
Just wanted to say your videos are well researched, informative, and shed light on the Kpop/ Korean entertainment industry amazingly well. Your hard work is appreciated! The video you did on Uee is your best in my opinion, it’s documentary level good
K-netz: “Eat well so you can be healthy” “You gained two pounds? How can you be so disgusting” “You lost two pounds?? Disgusting, you’re stick skinny” 🤨🤨🤨
2 Mistakes in the video One IU didn't drpp out of school. She graduated highschool and decided to not go to college. Two IU didn't apologise for the controversial lyrics of Zeze. She said that the all lyrics are up for interpretation by the listener but it's a different thing to accuse a person of such things based on such interpretations and she apologized for the chaos that happened (this is not a direct quote, this is what i remember)
She’s so brave for talking about her struggles and I think it’s good that she talked about her ED. I can be wrong but bulimia isn’t taken very seriously in Korea compared to anorexia and it’s often joked about so I’m glad she talked seriously about it and the people around her were understanding and listened to her.
I’ve been a fan of hers since marshmallow came out and honestly I couldn’t be more proud of her success, But I really hope she realises that she is enough. As someone who has suffered with bulimia for years it had such bad long term effects :( I don’t wish on her at all.
At the end where you talked about how people want idols to be healthy I think you should put that at the end of every video cause it’s true, people always say be healthy but as soon as they gain a pound they are made fun of for “letting them self go” I wish people knew we love them for them and not their body
Ugh,she would look SO good with a healthy weight.I feel so sad for both her and for any other idol who thinks like her. It's a disease that anybody can get,and sadly she got it. I hope she recovers someday and that happens during her career.Enjoying your life when you can is whats important.
It's sad. I've read things about how make idols, even BTS, aren't even allowed to gain any muscle. That's ridiculous. So much of this industry is ridiculous.
So ridiculous that Korean entertainment industry wants their stars to look skeletons… I admired IU for opening up her struggles & challenges but hope someday she will really taking care of herself , what is fame when you are slowly dying inside… we still love IU ❤️ you no matter what , your talent matters!
im so proud of her ppl don’t realize that while she is extremely popular now she went thru A LOT to get here she is truly one of my inspirations bc she never gave up. even tho she was in a broken home she practiced and worked her ass off and then her album failed. yet she still didn’t give up and then when popularity hit she was still 15-16 and. even tho she struggled she was able to come back from her struggles every time. the one thing is i hope that she one day stops this extreme diet and just focuses on herself her health is most important and all these diets r rly bad for her
Seeming as people bullied park bom into losing weight then congratulated her extreme weight loss shows how much they don’t care about their health and only the aesthetic of their appearance
Jesus 😡 so annoying, like wtf has to do her weight with her music? I hope they knew how harmful it is extreme weight loss for females so they will stop asking them to literally destroy their bodies for beauty
The problem in korea, is child slavery. No not working for pennies, but workong to be kpop group. For most they start before, or early teens. Practice 14 plus hours a day, with no pay, no promise of becoming. Also scandals of abuse of all sorts. Even when they become idols, they are restricted in what they can do, eat, ect. Most idols when they start becoming famous you would think the money, would be flowing. Sadly most dont make even 100k. Thats why ads, and any other fourm of advertising is used to help suplement theyre income. Remember under contract they have to most cant even have boyfriends, or social lifes. Its very sad, even though i watch kpop, kdrama, ect. Its not a happy life for most.
@@erenikorllos9747 there is. Indie music does exist in korea, k-indie is what they call it. AFAIK they don't go through those things that idols do. They start off performing in bars or basking(street performing) until a record company discovers them and sign them. They also do their own music. It's a healthier way to fulfill your dream as a singer/musician tho it is the harder route coz k-indie doesn't share the popularity that kpop has. Only a handful of the artists make it into popularity in SK alone and have the opportunity to perform or appear on local television like SORAN, 10cm, Daybreak etc. However, most indie artists are either soloists, duo or a band like literally a band with a vocalist and members who play instruments.
Maybe for trainees and young idols the work is much easier than the grueling studying students need to do. There's no such thing as rest in Korea for anyone.
That image of the young very thin frail looking woman with long legs and a huge thigh gap, with very prominent collar bones and sharp shoulders is so pervasive and so well promoted in their entertainment cultures that I am momentarily taken aback when I see a woman who doesn't look this way.
I've followed IU since 2012, so it's been like a decade. Love her and her music to pieces but I have to say that her mindset of having to stay thin and dieting rubbed off on me and I'd unknowingly had an eating disorder during all that time. You unknowingly tend to imitate the people you look up to and I did the same as her and dieted my body till I got severely sick several times. It may be due to the amount of misinformation regarding health and dieting during those times, plus I was young and impressionable, but I wish I could go back and tell myself that I was healthy and beautiful just the way I was. We are beautiful as long as we are okay with ourselves. Health is beautiful. Let people say what they want. We are beautiful no matter what.
I can relate to that. There was a tv show called degrading that I watched and two characters, mannie and Emma became bulimic and began over exercising as well. One kept having fainting spells so stopped. That episode inspired me to try those methods in HS and it worked. But after I read so many horror stories I knew to stop if I wanted to maintain my health and that I would have to lose weight the right way.
What sticks out to me is the fact that she always felt like her home could be taken from her at any moment, which likely also contributed to her ED. Growing up in a poor or financially unstable situation can already lead to food anxiety, stress, and poor eating habits (something I've experienced as I still struggle with having grown up in a similar situation to her). Add in the stress of fame and feeling like you're literally being rewarded for being at your lowest weight-wise... It's a toxic cocktail.
that last line is something I've also noticed. a prime example would be liz from ive. I had so many kpop mutuals who paid her so much attention during debut era. but when she started gaining weight, suddenly no one was talking about her except for when knetz were bodyshaming her. and now during I am era, she lost the weight and suddenly everyone's talking about her again. none of them bodyshamed her but they sure as hell acted like she didn't exist when she gained weight. really weird behavior from kpop stans.
@@glowfly1000 the weight loss one, not her actual videos but i was going to go back and watch it since she looks likes she’s doing a lot better but it’s gone
Could you please do cheng xiao from wjsn? She's not currently promoting with the group rn because she's doing promotions in china but ever since she has, cheng xiao has lost a lot of weight
love this content. I'm one of the biggest fan of IU, and for me no matter what they say even if she gets too skinny or become fat i would still continue to support her. Its her talent and personality that really stands out for me. no if's, no but's period. ❤
Nowadays in Europe when you see an interview with a star, they never or very rarely ask about the star's "diet" or mention the star's proportions (height, weight). It seems so strange to me to even ask such question. Unless they are extremely thin (and I would be worried about that person) I would not ask what they eat... It seems like in Asia (especially in S. Korea) people are so obsessed with appearance and weight. There are more important things out there, like does the person even sing well, what do they sing about, how is their life, what are their dreams, what is their style in clothes, what is their family like, have they travelled recently... No, they ask about diets in Korea... ugh. When someone would say that they lost 4 kg in 4 days, people would be schocked, but in a bad way, like "You have an ED. You shouldn't be so obsessed with your weight, that's not healthy." I think this diet-obsessed culture was here in Europe about 20 years ago as well, but the negative outcomes and consequences were more talked about later on and the culture changed. S. Korea has some development to do. It must be so difficult to be a self-confident woman in S. Korea if you don't have any plastic surgery done and your figure is not "perfect".
No matter what fans say, idols are expected to have unattainable figures, that's why they're idols. If they put on weight and start looking like everyday people, the public eye will naturally shift towards someone else they can place their unrealistic standards on, even if they mean no ill harm to the original idol. This will always be how fame and celebrity status works.
@@hussainara8832 I want to point out this is in no way in my opinion, and definitely not how I would like it to be. I am merely expressing how I think a toxic society fits into this topic.
@@hussainara8832 I also said putting on weight in regards to looking like normal people because the korean beauty standard, especially with idols, is to look underweight. To put on weight is actually ussually healthy for them and does not make them, or the normal people I compared them to, "fat" or unhealthy in any way just by itself.
@@hussainara8832 Also I said unattainable, not perfect. Perfect is different for eveyone and society's perfect does not exsist, because it is constantly changing.
@@amberkiely8521 well you're right..Korean beauty standards are Hella toxic and knetizens need to stop thinking that idols are some kind of dolls...I'm sorry I misunderstood and thought that you were saying that in your own opinion... Idols should have the right to look however they like and have whatever body type they are comfortable with instead of having to go through extreme diets.....like people just literally had iu eating two sweet potatoes and a banana every day....that is like the saddest thing about kpop...I wonder when these toxic people will realise that idols are actually humans...
Even through she is the standard of visuals, scoring all the requirements, she still was criticized..... People only ask her about diets....ofc she still will have difficulty not thinking about it
People that rudely comment that she should gain weight are just as bad as those that say she should lose it. Calling her "stick skinny" and "leg all bones" and then they pretend like they care.
Another amazing video!!! Your channel is so important! Talk about image and all this things is really necessary in our era! If you can, talk about Wonho’s body evolution! Thank you so much!
i wish the media would stop giving light to topics that talk about celebrities bodies. it’s so detrimental to one’s state of mind we don’t even realize it until someone brings it up.
Wow. Korean standards are so unhealthy. She looks beautiful at all of those weights. Such a shame she is pressured into maintaining an unhealthy BMI. I was a thin as that in my twenties. Like IU I was already naturally skinny but felt the need to be ‘perfect’. I finally got a messed up thyroid. These extremes will have health implications down the line. I learned that at a healthier BMI I still looked good and felt a lot better. Low weight can actually cause anxiety and depression.
I love your videos! I hope you can do Youngjae from GOT7, he was tiny when he debuted but in 2018 he gained weight and I remember how some people told him to lose weight...and in 2020 he lost a lot of weight really !
the message at the end does have truth but i also think a lot of kpop fans are changing perspective and since there are so many more international fans a lot of kpop idols are praised for being confident in not super skinny bodies and weighing more than what is “acceptable” and i hope this thinking only progresses further bc there are still so many ppl who think one standard is the only standard.
Korea's entertainment industry is harsh and very unforgiving. You are only famous and relevant when you look pretty. But pretty is not thin, or having beautiful features, or being a good person. Beauty in Korea means absolute perfection, but not too much perfection or else you will get hate for it. And that image of "beauty" must be mantained at all times and change accordingly to the trends, or else if you fail to keep up you fade out in the most merciless way possible. You get mocked, you become a constant source of nasty rumors until your image and reputation is compeltely destroyed by the lies, and no matter how hard you try to either ignore it or defend yourself, people won't listen and won't be happy unless you "get what you deserve". So many "visuals" in kpop have been driven over the edge due to the pressure to be perfect all the time. The need to be the right amount of thin, always look at least 10 years younger, be polite all the time, and not be too successful or people grow tired of you...I honestly don't know how kpop artists do it. It must be so exausting, and the worst part is that once you are in and get some level of success it must be very hard to leave the limelight without being viewed as a failure.
Its so sad to see how much value people put on a number on a scale, a number that doesn't even define your health. She is so talented and brave because she always stood by her art, she is a writer and a producer and every kpop idol thinks highly of her baceuse of that. I hope korean society and society in general stops putting so much value in physical appearance and focus more on talent and other waaay more important things that people have to offer rather than weight or bEaUtY.
I am so worried about her, I have never been a huge fan of Izone but she really catches my attention as an amazing performer..even I as a casual follower noticed thr huge weight loss 😭
I had no idea she struggled so much with her weight and body image. I’ve always admired her and set her as an example, so this is very upsetting to me. I wish she would just love and accept herself and see how beautiful she is. Although, as someone who’s been struggling with EDs for 10 years now, I know how hard it can be.
Such a lovely girl!! Its a shame that these young girls have so much pressure on them. She is gorgeous but will always have issues with her body. Stay healthy, IU!! 💕💕💕
I honestly think IU can have any weight and still be famous. Just talking about collaborations, the one she did with suga skyrocketed and the one with gd was also a hit. I guess she can focus on collaborating with artists with big fandoms to maintain popularity without thinking about her physical appearance
Heya just wondering if you could do more male idols on here it would be interesting to about weight from a male perspective woozi from seventeen I would suggest cos I know he's been working out and gained more muscle in recent years anyway love your videos :)
It's just sad how all K-pop female idols only peoples topic about them are weight. It sucks they can't eat many foods cause if they gain just a little food they would be criticized. Just imagining the state they are in makes me starve tbh. I can't do that.
I feel like iu is very prone to relapses, and that worries me… someone who has gone through one (or multiple) eds should ideally NEVER go back on a diet, because it’s really easy for that to develop into an ed once more
Korean beauty standards are crazy, and they're also too much normalized tbh. I love Jieun so much, and my heart just broke knowing all the pressure she went through, even at that young age.
I don't get it why people criticize her for her diets she is not forcing you to do so everytime she talks about her diet plan she tells disadvantage herself and advises to eat healthy and avoid dieting it is the fact that she being in this industry has to keep account of her weight and its her body who are we to criticize
Okay what???? I didn’t know Zeze was misunderstood like that. Personally, Zeze and Red Queen are my favorite IU songs. WOW.... I am shook!!! And it’s sad to see so many idols struggling with the harsh beauty standards and diets. I think a lot may have bulimia but don’t go as far as to admitting it and talk about it in a serious way. I think Korean variety shows and such try to not add that serious tone to serious matters as they fear it brings down the ‘mood’, when they are supposed to be entertaining and funny and not someone who talks about actual issues and things people actually experience. I am proud of IU for opening up about it in a serious way and not just half of the truth as in (yes I have some diet problems) but stating what’s truly going on and how far her eating disorder really goes.
I remember that when i was 13 i had a lot of school talks about eating disorders. i think that korea need more of those talks because i can see the wrong idea of the word diet, for them diet is just stop eating instead of changing some habits and of course the society points a lot if someone gains or lose weight
Iuuu is my favorite artist in kpop I love her more than ANY idiol or GROUP 😍 SHE IS QUEEEN. iu you are star among stars 😎😍 stay healthy and happy my love 😂😘😘❤ and keep SHINING 😎🤘WE (UAENAS )ARE ALWAYS WITH YOU 😘❤
18:11 yes, it is very disgusting... It's very worrying the fact that she told she used to do "water diets" just drinking a lot of water per day, without eating absolutely nothing and even she told her fans to do it once! Maybe she hasn't done it anymore, but it makes me feel so sad and sorry for her. She deserves better. And it all looks very normal inside the kpop industry, i remember that f(x)'s Amber interview when she said she had done that kind of diets too and between idols, they ask stuff like "are you eating these days?" (like it must be suppoused that maybe you're NOT eating at all or enough) and anwsers like "no, i'm doing that thing of just drinking water" and evrybody was OKAY ABOUT ITl! bro, i really feel sorry for all of them...
Seriously what are these artists going to do when they start ageing and showing their age?? If they already judge themselves so much in the youngest brightest period of their life. 😟
It's 2021 and she went on another crazy diet and is super thin again. It's sad but it's part of the job, look at all of these idols diet trending left and right, IU is not the only one. These idols will probably only have time to chill when they are older and settle down and aren't expected to be so active anymore.
