Professor Dave, I was always under the impression that the "iso-" prefix got alphabetized because it tells us something about the structure of the substituent. Although "sec-" and "tert-" do as well, those prefixes aren't immediately affixed to the rest of the name (AKA the hyphen remains in the name, unlike "iso" where there is no hyphen present). I liken it to why cycloalkyl substituents alphabetize the "c," since the "cyclo" tells us the substituent is a ring (e.g. "cyclopropyl" is listed before "methyl"). Since "di," "tri," etc. only is there to help condense the name, we don't alphabetized. That's what I try to convey to my students anyway, because even if it's not actually the case, it helps to see what should and shouldn't be alphabetized! -Prof. David (wife's account, sorry)

I think why iso is considered in alphabetical ordering because it is not derived from any number. While prefixes like di, tri, sec, tert, etc are not taken into account for alphabetical ordering because they are derived from some specific numbers.
@llazik1074
@llazik1074 8 лет назад
I think my professor told us that substituents with a hyphenated prefix are alphabetised by the substituents name without the prefix while the prefix iso is taken into account because it's not hyphenated. Thanks for the great work, Dave! ;-)
