I first saw Ivan ride in a British League match in 1973. My father told me to watch him, he's a winner. In my opinion he was probably the first truly professional speedway rider. Thanks for all the good times.
Still circulating faster than most of us could ever hope to... Thanks for sharing this glimpse into the talent of one of the greatest riders the world has known.
I first met and saw Ivan Mauger in action in 1963 or 64 at Brough Park Newcastle when He was a Newcastle Diamond . He was already a Top rider by then and went on to show the World what being a professional Speedway rider meant . King Ivan .
Thanks for downloading this. Beautiful sound. Brings back memories of the old days of watching Ivan at the County ground in his Falcon colours. Happier times long gone.
RIP Ivan. My boyhood hero. Saw him in 1977 at the white city stadium in the intercontinental final just about qualify for the world final after a re run where he came third. Legend is a word banded around a lot nowadays but he was. Always remembered by me and my family.
GOAT.Childhood thru t 20s hero. Think I was at college when triple crown won. Noone else so far. Saw him in action Ruapuna 1974. Will never forget that night,as international riders were present. Awesome. Super proud as a Kiwi.
Thank you mr mauger, saw him as a boy at western springs once and again as a man 30 years later in Brisbane,he's done more for New Zealand than most kiwis will every know.thank you mr mauger thank you
i don't suppose youv'e noticed Some folks have given Thumbs down for this ! Absolutely Beggars belief does it not ( i can only sumise those that did Have NO idea who Ivan MAUGER WAS - IS )
He stayed at our house a few times in the late 90's when he was running the golden helmet races in my home town. Picked his brain for riding tips pretty much the whole time.
Great video, love the guy, he was my hero growing up, what a great role model, I think I have turned out something like him, and Peter Collins too, very humble, never too cocky. Always knew my limits, never suffered fools, gladly, always gave it my best, never tried too hard. Have sat astride a speedway bike, Sorens actually, at Cradley Heath, so sorry I never tried it for real.
R I P Ivan, you were the Rock Star of Speedway, many good memories of watching you clean up in Gizzy, talking to you in the smallest grungiest grandstand ever built while you watched on from a spectators view - I dont forget that you rode past the Iron Curtain racing in the East when the Cold War was all on ... shot bro
As a youngster, I'd go to Belle Vue with my dad, sister and her boyfriend (now husband). Saturday evening, cushions to sit on, flask of coffee and sandwiches. It could be a howling gale and torrential rain but there he was.
That video is why we do not have the support for our great sport today, because the modern bikes of today sound like Singer sewing machines .That was a true speedway bike with the proper sound being ridden by the GREATEST speedway rider who threw his leg over a speedway bike, the legend who was IVAN MAUGER .
We had him at the Murray Bridge Speedway Classic about 15 years ago. I had seen him in the pits in civvys then a little later heard a solo being ridden very hard an made a beeline to the track. A semi modern bike and rode so well. Made all the amatuers playing with their classics look slow. Though some were far from slow. I saw him race in his heyday at Rowley Pk speedway on numerous occasions. He was generally just a bit better than all the pros, got beaten on occasion but did win more than he lost
When they all came to Ruapuna Christchurch 1970’s - Ivan, Ronnie, Barry - GB - European riders Fundin extra - very lucky to watch these chaps on the track as they were allup in Europe riding
about 72 for me I think. Remember being showered with granite chip and the smell. Still got Triple Crown Plus on the bookshelf. Met Ronnie Moore years later as we picked up our CX400s at Hollands. He was a great guy to chat to.
I've heard the old saying ' it's like riding a bike - you never forget', but this is ridiculous. The bastard makes it look so easy ! - Love the video !
Of course he is, that's why he was born in CHCH Women's Hospital, he was a big Canterbury Rugby Fan as he was a Canterbury boy at heart, he had a small pad on the Gold Coast to be near kids and events, he was 110% Kiwi
Seniors RULE!! Blowing off doors all the way to the pearly gates!!! At 62 I now do what I want, building mini-bikes, motorized bicycles or just whatever I feel like. And I don't have to take a bath. Teacher leave them kids alone!!
