It's crazy how when you leave pure performance, you end up with extremely rich music! Where many pianists miss the subtleties, some like here want to appreciate the composer's intentions at their fair value.
Wonderful and Insightful. I learned so much from listening to this performance even though it is quite different than the mainstream, run-of-the-mill, conservatory pianist that has plagued the concert halls of recent years.
The negative comments might be due to the poor sound of the 'pirate' video. Mr Pogorelich played the piece at a moderate pace (slower than Kissin for example) and he might have lost some dexterity compared to his younger days, but in all fairness, this was not a bad performance. Every note was clearly articulated and there was light and shade. Just like Horowitz, the banging went hand in hand with some tenderly played melodies. Of late, Ivo reads from the music score and has a page turner beside him. This is very uncommon on the concert platform but Richter did the same in the later stage of his career. My guess is that he has played these pieces for so long that he did not want to follow old habits. Instead, he wanted to constantly remind himself of what the composer wrote. Most pianists play feux follets as a brilliant showpiece. Ivo was determined that it was not played as a showpiece. This ought to earn our respect. We need to remember that while Liszt was flamboyant when he was young, he was fascinated by Faust and Dante. In his old age, I am sure Liszt would play his showpieces, such as Feux Follets, with dark undercurrents,, with Mephisto lurking around somewhere in the dark.
I believe he is sight-reading (i.e. 'a prima vista'), because he had to change all of his fingering in all pieces to deal with his severe arthritis. It's really sad to watch him struggle with the (progressive) disease. Watch the 5th fingers of his hands! He must be in pain all the time.
@Anton Razumov - By the way, I don't think I had asked for your credentials or your life story, but since you are using that to claim authority over me on all matters Liszt, let me just quickly tell a little bit of my background: I studied with the late Rian de Waal, who was a pupil of Charles Rosen, who was a pupil of Moriz Rosenthal, who was a pupil of Liszt, as well as a pupil of Mikuli, who was a pupil of Chopin. I think I have the right to claim being part of the Liszt tradition too. If you're claiming authority or exclusivity just to have some kind of moral highground, make sure you know who you are talking to. It's just a matter of respect and decency. I respect your background and your opinion, would you care to reciprocate that polite gesture?

I hope he is gentle and careful with his pinky...I had bad back for the last 5 years,bad hand trauma,swollen fingers too...before I got my ARSM...it is not as easy as it looks,so whoever does thumbs down-SHAME on you...

I would like to say that the tempo marking for this piece in the Urtext edition is eighth = 120 - 126, AKA a whole lot slower than most performances, and not far from this tempo.
heavily annotated might be more accurate... I did too, there are glimpses of the former talent, it is far from an amateur performance, but there is a lot of strange stopping/starting, clunky episodes and nonsense which does not have a place in the concert hall! You feel he could still play it well if he wanted too, but, frankly, for whatever reasons, he no longer gives a fuck?
@@chrish12345 not hardly, he was taught in the Siloti tradition from his wife, his emphasis is on sound versus accuracy. I for one think it is so refreshing and wish more individuals sounded different. To your point I do think sometimes he does take it too far, but this isn't one of those times
@@trblcleft nonsense, he always had a minimal repertoire precisely because technical perfection was so essential for him, and in his heyday he did usually play remarkably accurately, at least in terms of hitting the notes
Around 4 & a half minutes is just about the best speed that this piece should be played. Arrau, Bolet, and even Cziffra also played this moderately fast rather than lightning. I don't like the speeds of Kissin and the like.

I hate when he plays like this.. He owns this piece and with some practice he could play it just like he did 25 years earlier... He’s not interested in doing so, unfortunately...
If he still played it like he did 25 years ago, what would be the point in still bothering? Other than just making money? Music/art isn’t static, and neither is interpretation. And Eb, nobody pays for thickets. They tend to just grow on their own 🤣
I wish I could hear what people think he's lost. He may should not have allowed any cameras into hall . He will alwaysbe a name to remember. Peeps will always buy tickets ti see if his magic is back. He makes gorgeous sound and color variety . 75oercent pianists play everything mp and or can only render mf to maybe a forte. Most give entire concert in one dynamic.

I'm sorry but this is shockingly bad, I knew him in the 80's and 90's when he was possibly the greatest pianist in the world. This is a total shambles - he cannot play anymore up to the standard of a concert. Look at Lisiecki, Kantorow, Levanon etc. If they were around in the 80's he would have been the master. Now it is very sad to see him try to play
Apparently he is dealing with Arthritis (notice his fingers in this video) which would explain why he slows down so dramatically on some parts... He also had to change a lot of fingerings so he'd be able to play. Even so, it's impressive he manages to play like this when he very likely is in constant pain.

@@petergolding5733 To a certain extent, I agree with you. But sometimes leaving behind such great legacy by giving up because a disease is affecting you isn't enough. I know I would feel conflicted about not playing again. and I'm sure a lot of people still feel happy about watching him perform given his state.
@@joaomonteiro9619 The problem for me is that his playing slid catastrophically long before the arthritis kicked in. After 2000 he was a shadow of his former self (due, in some part but certainly not all, to the death of his wife). But he kept soldiering on. It was pitiful to watch, after having seen him in the 80's and 90's when he was utterly astonishing. And I'm sorry but I disagree with your comment. If a disease is affecting your hands and people are paying very good money to hear you play brilliantly, then you are a fake to them and need to stop. If a man works a lathe and ends up with one arm, he leaves his job because he can't do it properly. Ivo is doing a JOB and, if he can't do it to his best ability (which he certainly can't now) he should retire

It is much too slow! What is wrong with Pogorelich! Either he is sick or if not he should start exercising! Better listen to Kissin or Katja Bunuatishivili! Liszt "Feux Follets" and Chopin Study op.10,4 are the real touchstones for the true technical capacity of a pianist!
Kissin's and especially Khatia's Feux Follets are a joke and an insult to the composer. I do not know how anyone can like those two performances. Whilst Poggy isn't at his best here, I would still take him over those two any day of the week.
I'm sorry, this pianist has significantly declined since his masterful Gaspard de La Nuit in Tokyo many years ago. This awful Feux Follets a case in point.
