The world is STUPID ... this young man is a genius of the highest order, and should have been given fantastically lucrative engagements and recording contracts. He was instead shunned by much of the musical establishment. Those who shunned him were either stupid, deaf or insanely jealous, or possibly all three. He truly "speaks" through his instrument. A gift exhibited by a mere handful of musicians. What an amazing palette of sounds, colors and emotions ! What drama ....
Actually, he HAS had a career -- unlike so many first prize winners, who have basically fallen off the radar. Martha Argerich helped him by raising publicity with her conduct at the competition -- storming out of the hall in fury: he caught the attention of agents who were able to book him for concerts and recordings.
What I love about this performance is Pogorelich's ability to obtain so much depth and colour without unnecessary rubato. He can play at a fast pace and with strong dynamics and still capture so much inner detail.
The colossal line stretching from 3:46 to 4:20 -- the decrescendo elongated beyond imagining -- is the first time I've heard this section played in a sensible way. No pianist has played this without sounding repetitive, dull, and without direction -- until him.
The thing that gets me about this performance is that I recall being bored out of my mind listening to other pianists play this polonaise. Then I stumbled on this one and it's an instant feeling I get when you see an all time great piano performance.
Exactly, Pogorelich is so perfect and luminous in his playing that he sweeps away all criticism. He is so faithful to the score, so accurate and smooth in his dynamic range and progression, you just feel so comfortable listening to him - no surprises, no mistakes, no loss of concentration. This is one of the most difficult pieces Chopin ever wrote. I can only play it my dreams, and then only at a snail's pace, and still not grasp all the nuances within it. History will judge this troubled soul as being one of the greatest pianists that ever walked this planet.
I was lucky enough to be at his London debut playing Tchaikovsky 1 concerto with Menuhin conducting. (It had been billed as the Prokofiev but changed at the last minute). The greatest musical experience of my life. I was completely blown away. To be in the presence of genius is life changing and awe inspiring. The familiar notes were transformed and I am a different person after that performance. ( Purple prose indeed but trying to explain those kind of feelings is impossible for me.)
I think he is a very amazing interpreter of Chopin. It's like he feels the music instead of playing so bland. He truly understands the poetry of Chopin! I love the nuances in his playing! He is such a great pianist!
Always the same idiotic commentaries about Pogorelich...Give me a break! If after 33 years you still do not know the man,it is only your fault.He is simply a 20 century man approaching any performance in a 19 century spirit.You will find false notes,and completely personal and idyosincratic understanding of tempo...But he knows what he is doing! Many peacocks out there believe that he is just making mistakes out of slopiness...He is not! He plays the score as he bloody wants and I love him!
He knows what he is doing so much that he got the guts and the confidence on the truth of his work to play like that in the most prestigious and more "purist" competition in that existed in the world. "Here you are", dudes!

Without a doubt the best performance of the Tragic Polonaise. I have heard all of them on youtube, Ivo is the only one that understands the spirit and intention of F. Chopin when he composed this magnificent piece!! Bravo Ivo!!
Rubinstein is my favorite Chopin performer, I love Horowitz interpretation of this piece. But this one.... but this one. Never heard anyone played op 44. that passionate and dramatically
as ivos classmate,and concert pianist myself this is without a dout the best live performance of op.44,which I also played in but nearly as good as this,the tempo is so fast but when I first heard it live I immidiatly said to myself If chopin can hear this,because ivo has captured the very essence of this piece ,which culminated with magnificent finale-bravo maestro!!! The beginning is awesome ,because octaves were playe withs such speed and power and very delicate and gradual crescendo Horowitz version lacks power and passion and his finale is less impressive.
I F YOU COMPARE HIS INTERPRETATION OF POLANAISE OP. 44 AND POGORELICH `S INTERPRETATION IIT IS OBVIOUS WHO`S VERSION IS MORE POWERFULL AND BRILIANT -I HAVE NEVER HEARD SOKOLOV PLAY THIS POLONAISE AND BASED ON THE OPINION OF MAJORITY HE IS THE GREATEST LIVING PIANIST WITH TECHNIC THAT TRANSCEDS THE TECHNIC OF LATE W. re: to igor marich: horowitz has never impressed me. he was more of a show-off. and wanted to much of the box office take for yet another "rare" performance. look around, martha, ivo, valentina... some are more interested in music and some more interested in theater. you guess. ;)
Are you serious? you compare great Horowitz to just a good pianist? With all respect to Ivo Pogorelich he is a way out of Horowitz league. And its so obvious in this particular piece. By the way, Horowitz version is MUCH more powerfull!
@@dthomases1 They're a similar tempo, but not the same - Pogerlich is a bit faster. Also, he plays this with a very propulsive edge lacking in the two performances you mentioned, which gives it more of a kick. Little rushes and lurches forward, stuff like that.
For me, my favorite interpretation of op.44 is this. Despite of some mistakes, Pogorelich doesn't hesitate to playing his personal piano. And whenever i show&hear this, i feel chopin's panic and sense of unease at that time Understanding chopin's real mind, Pogorelich let us hear fantastic music!!
I didn't hear any misteakes... Just brilliant interpretation and amazing technique... Dude - to mention some "misteakes" here is really mean...😮 Comments like that just spoil the enjoyment...

Played with masculine tempestuous insolence and commanding elegance as well, real elegance, not with “I’m-so-romantic-elegance”; like a lot of modern pianists who try to be an actor, presenting old pieces with sentimentality and false gravity while playing but who don’t embody anything. Very clear and very brave. This must have been an exciting day for a few of these judges who were amazed at what a find this young man might be
You must look for this recording of his solo recital in Warsaw's National Philharmonic Hall (Filharmonia Narodowa), after he was eliminated from Intl. Chopin Piano Competition in October 1980. Right after that he signed with Deutsche Grammophon and released Chopin on debut disc. His 4 Scherzos from 1996, on DG, are amazing.

Thank you for the info.I will definitely look into it.Pogorelich on the 24 Chopin Preludes is the best Ive ever heard of those pieces and his Gaspard de la Nuit by Ravel is stunning and right up there with Michelangeli.Thank you once again.I bought his DVD and was a little dissappointed with his Chopin opus 44, but this video is priceless and couldnt be better.
Argerich quitted the Jury of this competition because she finded Pogorelich to be her favourite, but any of her colleagues would agree. What a backup anyway.
Pogorelich es uno de los pianistas más creativos. Uno puede estar de acuerdo o no ,pero convengamos que interpreta lo que toca. En Chopin tiene muchos aciertos. Cortot también se tomaba ciertas libertades opinables. No por ello deja de ser uno de los grandes del siglo XX.
The "tempo di mazurca" is wonderful, one of the best I've ever heard. In the other parts I have to admit that it was not the best Ivo in my opinion, too fast and less clear than I think he is able to be, probably for the difficuty in using pedal at this tempo. In any case... a wonderful artist
